I Awakening News Iowa Society of Perianesthesia Nurses President s Address ISPAN is happy to announce a scholarship of $ to a nurse from Iowa to attend National conference! It will be in Philadelphia in 2016 which makes for some great sightseeing of our nation s history. Watch for a future and Summer newsletter for the application form. Current board members are not eligible but board meeting attendance by members will get you points! National conference is a wonderful experience. I learned so much from nurses around the country sharing their problems & challenges. I really enjoyed hearing my peers talk about their specialties, research and best practices. I hope you will give yourself the gift of attending a National Conference someday and maybe get some money for it! ASPAN offers great scholarships, including $ to National Conference. Consider applying for monies for BSN or MSN programs and certification. There is also money for mission trips. Do you know someone who goes the extra mile? Consider nominating them for the Excellence in Clinical Practice Award. Forms are on the ASPAN website under Members, Awards. We all deserve a pat on the back and what better way than to receive money or a nomination or to be approached to join a great organization & encouraged to get involved! Submitted by Michele O Connor, BSN, RN, CAPA ISPAN President

ASPAN REGION 2 DIRECTOR Page 3 Good morning! Hope to find you all doing well :) Let me say thank you all for your ongoing commitment to your components and Perianesthesia nursing! I would like to take a few minutes to give to you an ASPAN update including information discussed during the ASPAN midyear board meeting. Also, I need your assistance with communicating with national office on a couple of items. It amazing to see first hand the work that goes on behind scenes to make ASPAN, our professional nursing organization incredibly productive and healthy! A ASPAN Website - Updated, lot's of brand new resources and information is available online. Availability brand new of ASPAN Standards, Practice Recommendations, and Interpretive Statements 2014 edition of Competency Based Orientation and Credentialing Program Call for Resolutions: 2015 Representative Assembly Candidate Profiles for Winter/Spring Seminars & Webcasts (this is very exciting!!) - ASPAN education is really striving to meet the needs of our members to equip us with the best quality education specific to perianesthesia nursing!! Opportunities to maximize this member benefit will continue to be a Board priority. Anesthesia Business Organization (ABO) - This month leaders from ASPAN (Kevin Dill, ASPAN attorney, Terry Clifford, and Denise O'Brien) will meet with ABO to discuss a partnership for researching specific core issues (ex.ponv). This group needs PACU nurses to collect data...they approached ASPAN. There are lot's of questions among the BOD and lots of interest too! This is an exciting opportunity if all works out for ASPAN to participate and have access to some very valuable data on our perianesthesia patient outcomes! We should have more information following the December meeting.
Page 4 ASPAN REGION 2 DIRECTOR CONTINUED Research Questions - three ASPAN teams are actively working on topics that concern each one of us, very exciting!!! (forgive me, this may not be the exact terminology, but I just want to share with y'all) A o Does administration of IV Tylenol and anti-inflammatories contribute to narcotic use? o Discharge readiness and regional anesthetics... o What is the most valid assessment tool to assess pain in the hospital setting? ABPANC reported, certification fee increase, reflecting IOM goals, advance original research and certification Aldrete Copyright - Older version, is public. Newer version has copyright fees. Institution need to check with their legal team and information systems people as to the appropriate usage. Most cases the IS team with Epic or whatever product they purchased along with it came a copyright fee...so its okay to use. POSS - this is the Chris Pasero pain assessment tool...contact her, she will most likely give permission to use her tool Revitalization tool kit coming soon to the ASPAN website. I do ask that you forward/share this info with your component leaders, especially the president elects. 9 I ISPAN MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Lisa Stiles Degrees: B.S.N. from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1989 M.S.N., Nurse Educator from Mount Mercy University in 2013 Present Employment: Staff nurse in the Ambulatory Surgery at St. Luke s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Past Experience Faculty, full time, in ADN program at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Staff nurse (25+ years) in Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Catherization Lab, Coronary Care Unit, Medical Telemetry Unit, and worked with anesthesiologist in Operating Room. My reasons for an advance degree: Improve my role as a nurse through evidence-based practice and teaching to prepare for the best patient care possible. Help me to pass on or share in experiences that will assist the next generation of nurses to come forth in the real-world environment. Lay a solid foundation of knowledge required in developing a competent professional. To advance my own personal knowledge on education associated with the profession of nursing. I am a strong believer in provide students the best possible opportunities to learn and to gain hands on experience. I hear from many of my clinical students their eagerness in putting their newly acquired knowledge and skills to actual use with the care of a patient. Problems a student meets are the limited opportunities in gaining experience. Continued on page 10
ISPAN MEMBER SPOTLIGHT CONTINUED Preceptorship is an important active teaching-learning strategy that aids in developing hands-on skill in a clinical practice setting. Students are able to practice in a real world environment as a staff member under the watchfulness of a skilled, experienced nurse. Preceptors are used as role models, mentors, and counselors. Preceptors provide support and encouragement for the student to socialize and develop communications skills with staff and other disciplines involved with patient care (Henderson et al., 2006; Hykas & Shoemaker, 2007). Being a preceptor to students, I find that many of them have a difficult time with talking to patients and family members. The skill of communicating with patients and family is important for the reasons of establishing a trusting relationship in which educating and caring for patients and patients families in promoting optimal healing. Precepting students is important not only with developing skills but to help the preceptee with caring for the patient holistically. My most recent student I was precepting learned upon starting I.V. s about veins that are difficult to cannulate due to vein size, rolling and valves of the vein. She made the comment that no one taught them that in skills lab References Henderson, A., Fox, R., & Malko-Nyhan, K. (2006). An evaluation of preceptor s perceptions of educational preparation and organizational support for their role. The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing, 37(3), Hyrkas, K., & Shoemaker, M. (2007). Changes in the preceptor role: Revisiting preceptors perceptions of benefits, rewards, support and commitment to the role. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 60(5),

MEET ISPAN S NEW VP ELECT Originally from Waterloo, Iowa, I received my BSN from Mt. Mercy College (now University) in Cedar Rapids and began my career in surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. After a year, I moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with some influence of friends, that I didn't move then, I would never do it. I worked in a level one trauma center (Hahnemann University) for 11years, obtained my certification and moved from a staff nurse to a clinical coordinator and laser safety officer. I also met my husband and delivered my daughter before they moved their OB services. After 11 years, I took a position as nurse manager for perioperative services in another area hospital. I went back to school at Wilmington University and obtained my master's in business and healthcare administration. In 2008, seeking professional and personal advancement, we moved to Long Island, NY and I began as the director of perioperative services in Oceanside, NY. I went back to school in 2010 for my master's in nursing and received my board certification as a nurse executive. In 2012, after the devastation of Sandy, we moved to Burlington, Iowa. I am currently the director of surgical services at Great River Health Systems in West Burlington. My daughter is enrolled in nursing at Mt. Mercy University and has made the dean's list after her first semester. My husband has retired and we routinely take advantage of the fabulous Wellness center. I have a dog, Oliver and enjoy the summer, the beach and the sun. I am excited to serve in a number of professional organizations and would like to obtain my doctorate in the near future. Fran will be acting VP Elect in March
