RMPA- NA is an exciting organization with many opportunities for you, the member, to participate. I began in RMPANA as most of you, attending meetings and not too interested in participating. I thought I was too busy with work and home. What I have found as I became more involved is that being an active member of RMPANA brings depth and interest to my job. It keeps me freshly interested in the work that I do. And it gives me sound reasoning to challenge practice that does not meet the standard of our specialty. I encourage you to attend your district meetings, to consider taking an office or to help with a conference. As nurses we are often too focused on others and put ourselves last. Investing your time in deeper knowledge of our specialty is a great personal investment. RMPANA nurses are an exceptional resource for each other and for the facilities where we work. I look forward to seeing many of you at the workshops held by each district this coming year! Enjoy your holidays! Sana Zamarripa BSN RN CPAN Installation of Board of Directors. What A Year it has Been Greetings during these warm and sunny Autumn days in Colorado. Retreat In The Rookies was a great success, time for reflection in your profession and rekindling relationships. It was a pleasure to have with us Katrina Bickerstaff, RN BSN, CPAN, CAPA, president of ASPAN. Katrina is from Massachusetts. She enjoyed our Colorado culture and scenery, not to mention the conference which she thought was outstanding. Katrina was one of our speakers at the conference. Check our web site for dates of next year s event. National Conference will be held this year April 30-May 4, 2017 Indianapolis, IN. Energizing Generations, The Race to Distinction, is the theme of this year s conference. Does your practice need a shot of vitamin B? Need something to get you involved again? Have questions about standards of perianesthesia nursing. Are you practicing according to our standards? I encourage you to become involved with RMPANA at your district level. Get involved with activities such as education, fundraising, volunteering with community activities. You choose the activity and time you have to devote. It may be just the boost of energy you need. Thanks to members like you, RMPANA remains strong and vital organization. 3 3 Greetings Region One Members! We are half way through our ASPAN year and President Katrina Bickerstaff continues to be dynamically engaged in the activities and business of ASPAN. Katrina s meetings, visits and negotiations continue to support our vision of ASPAN being the leading organization for evidence based perianesthesia nursing practice. ASPAN s Board of Directors recently met in Arizona to continue to move forward our goals and initiatives to support all nurses working in perianesthesia. Immediate Past President, Armi Holcomb, presented the slate of candidates for the 2017 Representative Assembly. We encourage all members of the organization to read about every candidate and vote so your component representative appreciates who the members want elected to the Board. Refer to the ASPAN web site, ASPAN.org. Currently our membership stands at 14,438 members. One of our strategic plan goals is to increase our membership by 5% in Let s shoot for another 700 new members nationally and share with them all the benefits we get from being part of this professional organization. ASPAN s Marketing and Communication Manager is in the initial phase of creating an ASPAN Perianesthesia Nursing public service video. I look forward to seeing it and sharing it with you. The Standards and Guidelines SWT continue to work on position statements involving Perianesthesia Patient with Do Not Resuscitate Advance Directive as well as Air Quality and Occupational Hazard Exposure Prevention. This group is also reviewing and leveling evidence for guidelines on Pain & Comfort, as well as Hypothermia Guideline revision/update literature review done leveling the evidence. Linda Beagley, Director of Education and the education committee continue to work on identifying new evidence based content for ASPAN seminar series, live web based education, and on-demand web based learning modules. There will be nearly 100 contact hours available for National Conference in ASPAN continues to support and provide various publications. In collaboration with Elsevier Science, ASPAN is on the final stages of review with its updated Certification Review publication, co-edited by Theresa Clifford, and Denise O Brien. President Bickerstaff has been busy working with the National Conference SWT, evaluating the Indiana site, evaluating educational tracts and sending letters to proposed speakers for the 2017 conference. Katrina has worked with board members to create a budget proposal for 2017 as well as presenting to and supporting the 140 members that attended the Leadership Development Institute this past September in Cincinnati, Ohio. So, you can see things continue to be in full swing for ASPAN and for our components. ASPAN s purpose is to advance and promote the unique specialty of perianesthesia nursing. This is who we are and what we bring to our patients. We bring our core values of passion, respect, integrity, diversity and excellence to every patient, every day, every time. I appreciate your commitment to this professional organization. Be the flame and ignite a spark, share the light!

The challenge is to seek out anyone involved in the care of perianesthesia nursing and share the exciting opportunities we offer to improve our practice. We ask you to join the effort by sharing our opportunities with your colleagues. Another option for District 1 members to pursue continuing education is the new program, Win A Webinar. This chance to win an ASPAN webinar is available at all District I meetings and educational offerings. Winners were recently drawn at Retreat in the Rockies and more chances will be offered at our monthly meetings as well at the Winter Workshop. Starting in September, District 1 began a Journal Club as part of each monthly meeting. So far, the articles chosen have been from the Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing (JOPAN) and included The Culture of Generosity, or, Just Ask a Nurse, and Evidence into Practice: Disseminating an Evidence-Based Practice Project as a Poster. The articles are selected prior to the meeting and included in the meeting announcement. At the meeting, the article is summarized followed by discussion. Join us on December 10 th for a morning to support Project Cure! Nancy O Malley, Team Leader and devoted weekly volunteer, will lead the group. 6 6 District 3 members at Retreat in the Rockies Watch for news of a summer workshop in District 3 District IV report by Marcia Keiser BSN RN CPAN Revitalizing is what District IV is trying to achieve. At Retreat in the Rockies a small group from around the district met to determine the direction District IV should be headed. Many ideas were discussed including more education. Those who were in the group have taken on responsibilities and are researching how District IV can improve and reach out to more members. The first item on the agenda is to reach out to the members in the district and inform them the district is here to encourage, support and provide educational opportunities for them. Therefore, this is an invitation to all nurses in Northern Colorado. Contact me if you are interested in opportunities to help you grow professionally in the perianesthesia setting. If you have questions/concerns about delivering the best patient care with evidence based practices. Come and join our group to discuss the problems you think, you re the only one dealing with. Along the same line the new ASPAN standards are available to help guide your practice, to provide you with evidence based position statements and to appreciate what nurses throughout the United States and around the world use as a tool to improve patient outcomes. As a reminder PANAW, PeriAnesthesia Nurses Awareness Week, will be coming up shortly in February. How will your area celebrate the work we do and our colleagues? Send me your marciajo@icloud.com, I d love to hear how it will be celebrated!!! Celebrate your coworkers and yourself, you do great work!! I hope in the next newsletter I will be able to share how much we have grown, the educational opportunities we have offered and the pleasure of meeting so many new nurses in Northern Colorado. Happy Holidays and a peaceful New Year. District IV Members pictured at right during the district meeting at Retreat in the Rockies
7 7 Governmental Affairs Report Winter 2016 Each of the following items are directly related to quality care, and patient satisfaction. Quality of life and care is of utmost importance when taking care of customers. Quality of care is a patient right, and patient satisfaction scores are directly related to the care they care given. The following articles have specific goals, criteria, and guidelines, and the quality improvements can be realized by nursing and healthcare on a national level. The comprehensive addiction and recovery act is aimed at overall reduction of opioid use, dependence, and addiction by instituting best practices, and giving grants to accomplish these goals, including training first responders on naloxone use in the field. Summary: S th Congress ( ); Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) Bill Summaries: TITLE I, II, and IX featured r/t best practice for pain management, alternatives, and over the counter reversal agents. The addition of bar code administration when nurses are administering medication has a direct effect on patient safety, and overall quality of care. It ensures that each nurse carefully look over medications prior to administration, and ensures the nurse review the 5 rights. Medication administration with the use of bar-coding is affecting hospitals, and the percentages to meet requirements will continue to rise in future years as a goal of patient safety The LEAPFROG Group Sugamaddex: reversal of neuromuscular blockade (NMB) New medications like sugamaddex, are new and upcoming medications that are designed to reduce adverse reactions in patients, therefore increasing quality of patient care. Safe patient handling is an evidenced-based program that is aimed at reducing injuries to both patients and the staff that take care of them. The American Nurses Association directly endorses this program, and organizations institute interventions to directly reduce poor patient outcomes. Although patient rights in regards to burial and cremation can be a very ethical concern, the state of Colorado has specific rules and regulations regarding a patient s rights to burial and cremation. As new laws are instituted in Colorado, we may see other states following these guidelines to ensure patients have right to choose what they want regarding postmortem arrangements. PANAW Proclamation has been requested for the state of Colorado. Respectfully, Ranee Sours BSN RN CAPA CPAN rsours5280@gmail.com
8 8 ASPAN/RMPANA News Sandra Olson RN-RMPANA Education Chair RMPANA held its 18 th Retreat in the Rockies on October 7-9, There were 158 registrations this year- a record number and I believe all who attended enjoyed the educational offerings and the opportunity to talk with other perianesthesia nurses. Many states were represented by the nurses who attended this year s offering. I urge you to plan to attend the 2017 Retreat in the Rockies which will be held October 6,7, 8. 2 upcoming conferences that will be excellent to attend will be with District 1 on February 11, RMPANA is also on the planning committee for the 2017 Interdisciplinary Collaborative Conference that will be held February 16. All conferences will be listed on the RMPANA Web site. Please let me know as other Districts plan conferences. There is other information on the RMPANA website and I encourage you to take a look at it and the ASPAN website also. RMPANA is applying for the Gold Leaf award this year and we are looking for information on awards, presentations, or honors that any of our members have received in this past year. Please send any information to myself, RMPANA board members, or Lois Schick who is working on this application. This information is needed before the end of the year. Congratulations to all new CAPA and CPAN certification nurses! Spring 2017 registration dates and deadlines for testing for CPAN or CAPA certification are January 9-March 6, 2017 for testing between April 3-May 30, I urge anyone not certified to think about making this one of your New Year goals! 9 9 Evidence Based Practice Please see the attached Sentinel Event Alert from the Joint Commission. While this article was written in 2012, I believe, it still applies to all of us today. In the perianesthesia setting, we give lots of opioid analgesics. Combine this with patients who have just had some type of anesthetic and an increasingly obese population, and we have a potentially dangerous situation. The Joint Commission describes how pulse oximetry alone is not a good representation of the patient s respiratory status. They recommend capnography, but do not make it an absolute. Do the facilities you work in mandate the use of capnography in your PACU s or on the patient s post op bed? Is it available at all or just recommended for patients receiving PCA s or epidurals? We all know this is the gold standard for respiratory monitoring, but is it really being used as it should? As always, if you have any evidence-based questions or issues that you d like further information on, please shoot them my way and I ll do my best to help you. My is gabrielle.ingalsbe@ucdenver.edu. Happy Holidays! Gabrielle Ingalsbe, MS, RN, CPAN Display of some of the posters presented at National Conference in 2016 Bylaws/Policy and Procedures Fall Update The focus for Policy and Procedure Committee this year has been developing comprehensive checklists of responsibilities for officers and committee chairpersons. These have all been completed and will be on RMPANA s website by end of year. Other changes made to policies include: Humanitarian Mission Scholarship changed name to Charitable Contribution Scholarship Advanced Nursing Degree policy changed requirement of RMPANA membership from two to one year and both entry level and advanced degree scholarship application deadline changed to July 31 st. New nurse scholarship changed to award one scholarship each year for $1000 and when reapplying, requirement changed to submit an unofficial transcript and one letter of reference. I am looking for some interested person to Chair this committee and would mentor you for the next year. If you have any interest, me at sharonsample1949@gmail.com.
