Professor of Surgery takes up first-time post at DBTH One of Team DBTH s Surgeons has been awarded the title Professor of Cancer Surgery by the University of Sheffield, becoming the first person ever to hold the position at the Trust. Professor Lynda Wyld, Consultant Breast Surgeon, was awarded the title of Professor in recognition of the research she has undertaken around breast cancer and for teaching and training cancer surgery in the UK and Europe. Speaking about her new role, Professor Wyld said: Working in breast cancer research is very exciting at the moment as progress is so rapid and we can now see the prospect of a cure for 80% of women with the disease. It is humbling for researchers when women, facing the trauma of a cancer diagnosis, agree to take part in research studies to help other women in the future. Their generosity and commitment at such a time is simply amazing. The University of Sheffield and the Trust have been working to develop closer collaboration and my appointment has been part of this for which I am immensely grateful. I would like to thank the Trust for their continued support and encouragement. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences with health colleagues, ultimately making further strides in the treatment of breast cancer. The most common of its kind in the UK, breast cancer affects around 55,000 women per year, however due to research, and subsequent treatment advances, mortality from this illness has begun to steadily fall. Playing a significant role in this improvement, Professor Wyld is leading a major UK-wide study at DBTH into the treatment of older women with the disease. Called the Age Gap Study, the project is working with over 3,500 patients across the country and, as the name suggests, looks to reduce the difference in the outcomes of breast cancer treatment which is often seen between older and younger women. As a major focus of the study, Professor Wyld and her team are developing a predictive tool which will help to tailor treatment options for elderly patients, taking into account factors such as fitness and frailty. At the same time, a Decision Support Instrument (DESI) is also being created to aid and assist women to make informed decisions about their preferred treatment. On behalf of everyone at the Trust, we want to congratulate Lynda on such an amazing achievement. 2
Introducing the Clinical Portal The 'Clinical Portal' will be the focus of this week's Friday Lunchtime Lecture. Starting at 1.00pm in the Lecture Theatre at DRI and streamed across all sites, this will be an opportunity to find out more about this new Trust system and how you can get involved. The Clinical Portal forms phase one of the Electronic Patient Records project, amalgamating several systems that clinicians frequently use on the wards onto one easy to read dashboard. In practice this will allow you to search for a patient on the portal, which will return an overview of their details from various systems without having to log-in to each one separately. There will also be an option to input information, creating digital patient notes. The Clinical Portal will have a focused launch for up to 50 clinicians on a first come, first served basis. You will be able to use the system and provide feedback to the project team. If you are interested in taking part in the launch, please Joanne Hutchinson on j.hutchinson1@nhs.net. All are welcome to the lecture - come along and find out about this exciting new development. Clinical Manager appointed to NICE Guideline Committee Jaimie Shepherd, Stroke Pathway Clinical Manager at the Trust, has been appointed to the NICE Guideline Committee for Stroke as the Physiotherapy representative. On behalf of everyone at the Trust, we want to congratulate Jaimie on this achievement, who will undoubtedly provide expertise to the committee, drawing upon her experience of managing the stroke pathway over a number of years to help inform recommendations. The Guideline Committee are developing the update of the NICE Clinical Guideline: Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) in Over sixteens: Diagnosis and Initial Management. Since the guideline was published in 2008, new evidence has emerged in areas such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy in ischaemic stroke, controlling high blood pressure in acute haemorrhagic stroke and the role of hemicraniectomy. In addition, there is some uncertainty about the role of conventional risk stratification in TIA, the best approach to intracranial imaging for these people and early mobilisation and optimum positioning of people with acute stroke. The committee will review current evidence, write recommendations and develop the new guideline which is expected to be published in March A member of the Trust for almost twenty years, Jaimie joined Team DBTH in 2000 as a newly qualified Physiotherapist. Working within all areas of the stroke pathway, Jaimie moved into the role of Stroke Care Coordinator in 2008 before commencing as Stroke Pathway Clinical Manager in
Goodbye to our two Sharons Two midwives who have clocked up between them 62 years of service are leaving the Trust. Sharon Dickinson, Head of Midwifery, joined the Trust in 1992 and is leaving the Trust for pastures new. Sharon Pickard, Matron Maternity and Gynaecology, joined the Trust in 1981 as a Staff Nurse and then trained as a Midwife. Sharon Dickinson said: Thank you to everyone at the Trust for their support over the years. I have been very lucky at DBTH as I ve had amazing opportunities. I will look back on my time in the organisation with great fondness and pride. Thank you to everyone for their support over the past 26 years. Sharon Pickard said: Thank you to all my friends and colleagues for all their support and dedication over my 36 years at DRI. I trained here as a staff nurse and then as a midwife and I definitely believe I have been trained at the best hospital. We would like to wish them both well in their retirement and thank them for their service to the Trust. Skills Fest 2018 Our Education and Training Department have been busy showcasing the fantastic opportunities available at DBTH, by attending the annual Skills Fest at Doncaster Dome. The event, which is organised by Doncaster Chamber, invites schools from around the region to discuss careers in a variety of areas. DBTH attended the event and were able to offer a large number of individuals advice on careers in health including the following: Work experience and apprenticeships at DBTH Midwifery and Paediatrics Occupational Therapies Dietetics Life Sciences Datix Downtime Datix will be down at 4.30pm on 20 February for approximately one hour and again on Wednesday 21 February for three hours due to essential maintenance and upgrades. We apologise for any inconvenience. For further information, please contact Tracy Evans-Phillips on
Beating breast cancer at DBTH Although the one of the most common illnesses of its kind, the risk of death from breast cancer is steadily falling. Due to a range of treatment advances, survival rates have doubled from 40% to 78% over the past 40 years. Screening plays a big part in this success story but research-led advances in treatment have also been a major factor. New treatments alongside wonder drugs such as Trastuzumab, Pertuzumab and Palbociclib have been made available contributing to better outcomes, along with medicines to protect the bones from the disease and stronger and better chemotherapy. Surgery is also much better, with a much lower rate of mastectomy for breast cancer and advances in reconstructions surgery meaning that women have a better quality of life after treatment. As described in our front-page story, as a Trust we have played a significant role in breast cancer research, taking part in numerous ground breaking trials over the years such as the Age Gap Study, led by, the newly styled, Professor Lynda Wyld. The Trust has also recently agreed to take part in the 100,000 Genome Project which has the ambitious aim of recruiting 100,000 patients from across the UK with a range of cancers or other rare diseases to find out about the genes that cause these illnesses. This ground breaking project is likely to yield huge benefits for our understanding of the causes of breast cancer in the future so helping us to prevent it developing in high risk women. The DBTH research team would like to say a huge thank you to all the patients who have supported this massive improvement in breast cancer outcomes by taking part in breast cancer research at our Trust over the years. May the trend continue well into the future as we seek to make breakthroughs in the treatment of breast cancer. Research awareness sessions We re hosting some research awareness sessions, aimed at all staff to improve clinical practice and offer further opportunities for patients through research. Please abstract entries to joanne.sayles@nhs.net before 30 September Bug of the Month: MRSA MRSA is a gram positive bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics. The bacteria can colonise or cause infections in patients, if the bacteria enters the bloodstream this is called a bacteraemia. This is a serious infection with high morbidity and mortality rates. The main route of transmission is through direct contact mainly by hands, and it survives on skin scales and dust. It's important that we screen for MRSA to minimise its spread within the Trust and pick up cases so that appropriate treatment can be provided. Click here for more information on when and how to screen for MRSA. Implementation of National Early Warning Score (NEWS) The current black and white physiological observations and EWS chart, that has been in use for around 18 years, will soon be replaced with a colour-coded care pathway document (chart). Bassetlaw site will be the first to see this change over the next few weeks followed by DRI. Notice of exact dates of implementation will be announced with ward / department managers nearer the time. Any questions please contact: lee.cutler@nhs.net 11
New fire safety roles As part of the ongoing Fire Safety Improvement work we are providing additional Fire Safety Training. We have recently reviewed training and have produced an updated Fire Safety Training Needs Analysis (TNA). From the updated TNA we have developed Roles and Responsibilities and Training for the following: Fire Incident Manager Fire Safety Wardens The Fire Incident Manager is generally the person in charge of the Ward or Department and present at the time of a fire incident, all Band 5 clinical staff with in-charge competency and above are required to undertake this training (two yearly with mandatory SET Fire training bi-annually) Due to the size and complexity of the Trust estate it is also necessary to have local fire wardens to ensure there is a focal point for fire safety and prevention. The fire safety wardens will be the eyes and ears within each ward and department but will not have an enforcing role. They will report any issues identified to their Matron and/or Head of Service or Departmental Managers and if necessary to the Fire Safety Advisor or Fire Safety Manager. The training will be carried out on all three sites, and a schedule of dates can be found on the Intranet. Should you require any further information or clarification please contact Neil Colton neil.colton@nhs.net or Sean Tyler on seanalistair.tyler@nhs.net / Thank you #TeamDBTH Had surgery on 5 February at DRI. I would like to say a huge thank you to ALL the staff who cared for me, from the admissions staff to the lovely nurses and consultant. All were truly kind, considerate and kept me well informed of all what was going to happen to me. A big thank you to the staff in recovery, they were so lovely and kind. It was a very modern spotlessly clean unit with friendly caring staff. I delivered my baby on the labour ward at Bassetlaw Hospital and I m so glad I decided to go there (not my nearest hospital) I honestly had the best experience I could have hoped for. The midwives were fantastic at encouraging me through the most difficult thing I ve had to do. I had the exact birth I had hoped for and I m so grateful to the midwives for helping me. I could not have done it without their encouragement and advice. Amazing team. I just want to say a big thank you to Dr Sanjay who looked after my nanna on ward 25. Sadly my nanna passed away on Monday 29th January on the ward and while I am heartbroken I have to express mine and my family's gratitude for his excellent care. Dr Sanjay was so caring towards my nanna and towards us as a family, taking so much time to explain to us about my nanna's diagnosis and treatment. He was always willing to answer questions and check how we were. Without a doubt he is an assett to his profession. Thank you so very much. 12
