Celebrating International Nurses Day International Nurses Day took place Saturday 12 May and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank our nursing team here at DBTH for your hard work and dedication. Lots of you got involved on the day, with bunting galore and, of course, a maruading selfie frame which found it's way across the Trust, appearing like a social media swashbuckler. Here's a few familiar faces from around the Trust! Thank you #TeamDBTH nurses. Monday (14 May) also marked Operating Department Practitioner Day - here are a few of our ODPs getting in on the selfie frame action! 2

Local MP visits special volunteers at DRI Dame Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central, visited Doncaster Royal Infirmary earlier this month (4 May) to meet our Butterfly Volunteers. Introduced in August 2017, these specially trained helpers provide comfort and company to hospital patients during their final moments. Proving to be a hugely successful addition to the team, the volunteers spend time with patients when medical and clinical staff cannot. They will sit and talk, run errands and also offer respite to the patient s loved ones, giving them valuable time to be able to go home for a few hours, safe in the knowledge that their friend, parent, child or significant other is not alone. Last year the Royal College of Nursing released a study which described how many hospital patients were dying alone, due to the time constraints facing clinical and medical staff. Recognising that more should be done for palliative patients and their families, the End of Life Care Team at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have been working hard to improve the experience of those in the final stages of life. Dame Rosie met six of the 14 volunteers, discussing with them their experiences, as well as what inspired them to offer their time. Chatting for over an hour, the group described the role as a privilege to undertake, recounting how humbling, profound and comforting the time spent with patients can be and how they would encourage others to get involved. Karen Lanaghan, End of Life Coordinator at the Trust, was also present for the visit, she said: I want to thank Dame Rosie for coming to the Trust and meeting with the volunteers. The role they play is absolutely essential and we cannot thank them enough for their time. Due to challenges we face as a health service, we can often view a patient as a series of symptoms, rather than a person with hopes, desires and also fears. While it isn t always possible for our clinicians to sit and spend time with individuals during the end of their life, our Butterfly Volunteers offer this crucial support. You don t get a second chance at this kind of care and this is one way in which we hope to ensure that we get it right. This latest scheme is just one of a number of recent improvements introduced to end of life care at DBTH. In early 2017, the team introduced the Me and My Plan project, which utilises a specially designed folder for patients, containing their care and treatment choices, personal preferences and information. Although a simple addition, this important document allows staff to avoid having the same conversations with the patient regarding their care, as well as serving as a crucial guideline when clinical decisions need to be made about later stages of treatment. Dame Rosie Winterton said: I was incredibly humbled to meet with the Butterfly Volunteers the service they provide for patients is profoundly touching and I want to thank them for giving their time in this way. Ensuring that people, as well as their loved ones, are supported as they near the end of life is hugely important. I want to praise the work of the Trust s End of Life Care Team, and everybody involved in making changes for the betterment of the people of Doncaster. If you would like to become a Butterfly Volunteer, dbth.butterflyvolunteer@nhs.net to find out more information. 3

Building on the best achievements After two years of hard work and significant progress, the 'Building on the Best' programme has finally been completed. Funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, in partnership with institutions like Hospice UK, NHS England and NHS Improvement, the scheme has made significant improvements for patients in their final years. More specifically, the framework has found new ways to enable high quality care, whilst still respecting the wishes of terminally ill patients and their loved ones. Although the exact details are still to be published, Building on the Best was nevertheless a resounding success. The case studies involved clearly demonstrated that change and quality improvements are easily achievable, without the need for extra spending. All it takes is the right combination of staff time, strategic direction and leadership. With this approach, the teams have managed to produce numerous benefits for patients, including: Earlier referrals to the specialist palliative care team Redesigned forms and staff training to support families A reduction in the need for calls to the hospital bereavement offices. Whilst the programme has now concluded, a more thorough report will eventually be revealed, sharing more details about how we can improve care for end-of-life patients. IT Security Programme- Digital Garage The IT Security team will be running its Digital Garage events throughout May and June These sessions have been sponsored by Google UK and focus on a variety of topics including: How to protect your smart device from security risks How to deal with cyber-bullying for you or your family How to protect your online presence whilst shopping and sharing information. While the sessions only last for about 50 minutes, they will still provide you with the latest guidance regarding all cyber security risks - even those that you might face at home! If you would like to attend one of these sessions, please contact Robin Smith, IT Security and Continuity Manager, at robin.smith5@nhs.net or on Date Venue 18 May, 10am Education Centre, DRI 25 May, 10am IT Meeting Room, DRI 1 June, 10am IT Meeting Room, DRI 8 June, 10am IT Meeting Room, DRI 23 June, 10am IT Meeting Room, DRI 30 June, 10am IT Meeting Room, DRI 4

Appointment of four Divisional Directors at the Trust As you may know, we are changing our Care Groups, moving from six to four. We are making this change in order to reflect the work needed to fully implement our, recently refreshed, five year Strategic Direction, as well as being able to support our commitment to partnership working across the Integrated Care System (ICS) and Place plans. In order to facilitate this change, a recruitment process is being followed, which began on Friday 11 May with interviews for four Divisional Director posts. These gave us a series of extremely difficult choices to make, with the successful candidates selected from a very capable field and I am pleased to announce the four new Divisional Directors are: Jochen Seidel, Divisional Director for Clinical Specialists Nick Mallaband, Divisional Director for Medicine Antonia Durham-Hall, Divisional Director for Surgery and Cancer Eki Emovon, Divisional Director for Women and Children I am confident their skill and expertise will lead us into an exciting and successful new chapter for the Trust. I also want to take this opportunity to express my thanks to those shortlisted. It is no secret that we have a hugely talented team at the Trust, and this was clearly evidenced by the calibre of candidate interviewed last week. As a Trust, we have operated the current organisational model for a number of years, and, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank every member of Team DBTH for their hard work and commitment to improving patient care within this structure. With these posts now in place, we will begin the process of reorganisation. Keep checking the Buzz for more information, and please get in touch if you have any further questions. David Purdue, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive 7

International Clinical Trials Day Research staff are celebrating International Clinical Trials Day to help spread the word about clinical research and answer questions from staff and the public. International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated around the world each year. The event is used to commemorate the day, way back in 1747, that James Lind started his famous trial on the deadly disease scurvy. The day provides a focal point to raise awareness about the importance of research in healthcare, and highlights how partnerships between patients and healthcare practitioners are vital to high quality, relevant research. To celebrate this important day, research staff will be in the main Outpatient entrances of Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital between 11.30am and 1.30pm on 17 May. They will be there to promote their work and to answer any questions that the public or staff may have about clinical research. They will also be hosting their own version of Play your Cards Right and running a mock research study: the Chocolate Drop (yes, you might get to snaffle a chocolate drop!) where staff and patients can experience what it is like to be involved in a study. There is also an open door policy for staff members who may wish to visit the R&D office in C Block, to discuss any research ideas or opportunities. Fully funded PhD opportunities for DBTH staff Applications are now open for two Clinical Academic Nurse/ Midwife/Allied Health Professional posts. If you re a qualified nurse/midwife or allied health professional (AHP) with an interest in research and you want to develop your career in a supportive and inspirational environment, combining work and study, this exciting new role is for you. The opportunity will give you the skills and knowledge needed to improve healthcare and patient outcomes, think differently about clinical practice and develop your career. A PhD training programme has been developed in partnership with DBTH and The University of Sheffield (UoS). This opportunity will be competitively offered to at least one nurse and the second one opened up to all other health professionals who can combine high quality clinical practice with the training and commitment needed to study for a PhD. This will be a permanent post (minimum 30 hours per week). The programme will allow the individual to maintain clinical practice (up to two days a week) and complete a PhD (three days a week) over four and a half years. The three days PhD time will funded at band five Agenda For Change, with your remaining clinical hours funded at your current banding, plus your University PhD registration fees will be covered. Additional support will be provided through mentorship, supervision and through a peer group of PhD students throughout the region. The role would be ideal for anyone wishing to develop the foundations of a clinical academic career. This is advertised as an internal post through NHS jobs: 2e06b885c55d7/?vac_ref= If you require any further details please contact Julie Bury, Research Fellow on Julie.bury@nhs.net or

Vodaphone Contract Migration If you are in possession of a Trust mobile phone that is with Vodafone, then please be aware that it will soon be migrating onto a new contract. This mainly applies to DRI staff, who will receive the following text notification a few days before the migration: 24 May Vodafone your number is due to migrate to a new contract on 24 May. Any interruption in service should be minimal to none, but if you still experience any connectivity issues by close of play on the day, please restart your device to make sure that any changes are picked up from the network. As the above suggests, there is a small possibility that your phone signal will be interrupted on the day, in order to accommodate the migration. If network problems persist after 24 May, please contact Ros Burdall, Telecommunications and Accommodation Manager, at ros.burdall@nhs.net or on Ramadan 2018 Ramadan in 2018 will begin in the evening of Tuesday 15 May, and will end in the evening of Thursday 14 June. Ramadan is held during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a time for spiritual reflection, acts of charity and spending time with loved ones. It is also a month when Muslims fast. This means they don t eat or drink between sunrise and sunset, which is important during Ramadan, as it allows them to devote themselves entirely to their faith. For more information on health facts click here. Make May Purple The Acute Stroke Unit at DRI have been out-and-about all week, supporting 'Make May Purple', the national campaign run by the Stroke Association to raise awareness of the condition. The team have had their stand outside the East Dining Room all week, giving out useful information on: how you can make lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of having a stroke; the symptoms of a stroke and the effects a stroke can have. If you'd like more information on how eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking and cutting down the amount you drink can reduce your chances of having a stroke, you can visit the Stroke Association website here. Our Health and Wellbeing team also has some useful resources to help you eat better or stop smoking here. 10

Isolation room cleaning chart The Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team have put together a helpful chart for you to refer to when deciding which type of clean an isolation room requires on patient discharge. Please see the new chart and display on your ward (not in the patient area) to ensure that the necessary clean is carried out on discharge of a patient in isolation. The IPC practitioners will also sticker the appropriate cleaners signage sheet to indicate the type of clean required. Job description and person specification templates Please make sure you are using the new job description and person specification templates which are located on our recruitment intranet page. This is to ensure that there are no delays when advertising posts. If you have any questions, contact the recruitment team on GDPR drop in sessions The new General Data Protection Regulation will come into effect on 25 May. The Trust has organised an awareness session for you to go along to and find out about how the change might affect you as a staff member. The session will take place on 21 May, in DRI Learning Room One, half hour sessions between 10am and 3pm. G D P R 25 May 2018 The session is aimed mainly at managers and supervisors but anyone with an interest in this new legislation is welcome. Bluespier Problem Resolved The Bluespier Theatre App is back up-and-running after encountering a recent certification issue. With that in mind, regular access to the system has now been restored and users are once again able to log in the as they normally would. Your patience was greatly appreciated whilst this was being addressed. Nutrition and Dietetics has moved The Nutrition and Dietetic Service at DRI has now moved to the Clinical Therapy Department. This is now their base office, where they will hold some outpatient clinics in addition to the ones held in Outpatients. All telephone numbers remain the same. 11

World Hand Hygiene Day For World Hand Hygiene day, our amazing Infection Prevention Control (IPC) team has been out-and-about encouraging staff and visitors alike to wash their hands. With striking posters, informative literature and industrious use of social media, the team has worked tirelessly so that the message can reach as many people as possible. This has all been done as part of the World Health Organisation s annual drive, which this year has focused on raising awareness about sepsis. Commencing on 5 May, the campaign has been highlighting how simple precautionary measures like keeping your hands clean can make a really big difference when it comes to preventing the spread of infection. Carol Scholey, Lead Nurse, said: Hand hygiene is a simple thing and it s the best way to prevent against infection and illness. Staff should ensure that they clean their hands in the right way and at the right time, using soap and water or alcohol hand rubs. As always, the IPC team have heavily promoted the benefits of good hygiene and this year have increased their social media presence as well. By covering Facebook with tips on handwashing technique, instructional guides and pictures of their interactions on wards, the team have ensured that everyone gets the message loud and clear 'It s in your hands prevent sepsis in health care''. Meanwhile, the use of Twitter has also allowed the Trust s achievements to reach a wider audience. As a result of the team s hard work, hand hygiene in the Trust is now approaching an impressive 97%. This is all on the back of an excellent year for the IPC team, who have already had several noteworthy accomplishments. For instance, we have now seen the Trust s Healthcare associated infection rate fall below the national average, at 4.6%. Moreover, the environmental standards score is above 97% and 79% of flu cases are diagnosed within 20 minutes. Hand hygiene is at the core of effective infection prevention and control practices and is a crucial part of what every hospital should aim for. With that in mind, the IPC team would also like to remind staff that the public expect you to have clean hands and to be #Bare Below the elbows ' before touching them. 13

Generator gets a 'pick-me-up' The craning into position of the new emergency back-up generator near D Block was a huge (literally) success. Phil Colebourne, Project Manager, said: "Thank you to all of the staff in Women s and Children s Care Group who helped by moving their cars and parking elsewhere. I also want to say special thanks to reception staff who help to organise the activity and provided coffees!" Digital DBTH: Feedback on our Clinical Portal Since the Clinical Portal was introduced, it's received some great feedback from our clinicians. I have been using the Clinical Portal in the outpatient clinic and during ward rounds and have found it to be very useful in both circumstances. In clinics, the lists are populated and live patient registration is shown, meaning that I am able to see arrival times and the number of patients that are waiting. The portal also allows navigation between ICE, Medisec and Synapse. During ward rounds, you can also see the names of patients allocated to an individual consultant. However, for Medisec dictation, the user will have to log-in to Medisec separately. Once JAC prescribing, CVIS and Symphony are available, then the portal will be even more useful. I would encourage clinicians to use it and provide feedback, so that it can be updated to provide bespoke features. Dr Abraham Chacko Consultant Cardiologist The Diabetes nursing team produce a daily list of patients who have been identified as having low or high blood glucose levels. This is a very time consuming exercise, as we only receive an NHS number, which then has to be checked to identify the patient and confirm the diagnosis. The new Portal is helping greatly with this, as all the information we require is now held within one area. Annette Johnson Diabetes Lead Nurse For more information with regard to the EPR Clinical Portal, please contact Joanne Hutchinson, j.hutchinson1@nhs.net or

Your Health & Your Wellbeing Health & Wellbeing update Are you a serial checker? Do you know how many times a day you check your phone? To book an appointment please contact Darren on Reiki was recommended to me by a colleague as I was feeling stressed and under pressure. Darren made me feel very welcome and calm. He was taken aback by the auras surrounding me and could sense I was battling internally with lots of issues. He was very calming and informed me of the issues he had picked up from my session. Darren was spot on with his assessment and I left the session feeling relaxed, reassured with supportive suggestions for self -help. I have attended three sessions and feel much less anxious. I can highly recommend attending Reiki. In summary its rejuvenating Lorna Fox We need you to fight flu Planning for next winter has started already and the Occupational Health team are already thinking about flu. Places must be booked by contacting the Education Centre on contact or dbth.training.department@nhs.net. 15

Preoperative Assessment Developments DBTH is currently undergoing a review of its elective surgical care and theatre usage. This is being enacted with an aim of enhancing the patient experience and improving efficiency. As part of this review, Preoperative Assessment (POA) will also go through a reorganisation of its own. The Plan: Our Pre-Op services have historically been split up into different specialties. However, many trusts are now moving over to a more unified POA facility and DBTH is planning to do the same thing. This means that we will be moving the majority of our POA services into central areas at DRI and Bassetlaw. Why are we doing this? There will be numerous benefits to this change: The Trust will be able to pool together its scattered Pre-Op resources and expertise into one place It will also enable us to quickly triage patients and allocate appropriate time and staff according to the procedure A centralized POA service will help us to assess straightforward cases in a more timely manner, thereby minimising unnecessary visits and investigations In turn, this will enable us to devote more attention to complex cases. Where are we now? We are currently acquiring suitable locations for the central POA areas and are in the process of developing the patient pathway that will integrate with the Trust's work on elective care. In the meantime, we have been successful in securing A5 at BDGH and are planning a temporary move there. We have a preferred site identified at DRI and we are working with management board to determine the possibility of using it in the coming months. Further Engagement: The Pre-Op team are engaging with staff throughout the organisation, in order to share these ongoing plans and developments. As well as this, they will be looking to obtain input and involvement from anyone who works with the POA service, including patients. Dr Paul Bedford Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for Preoperative Assessment Rachel Gibson Matron Surgical Care Group Digital DBTH On Monday 21 May 2018, Montagu Outpatient areas (except for those that take samples) will go live with pathology and radiology requesting using the ICE System.
