2 Introducing our new charity We are pleased to announce the launch of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Charity (DBTH Charity) the official charitable fund for the Trust. As a member of Team DBTH, you know that it is our priority to provide high quality treatment for patients in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, however there is always more that can be done to support local people when they need it the most. Thanks to the amazing generosity of our supporters, we are regularly able to go above and beyond routine spending, providing extras which make all of the difference to our three main hospital sites in Bassetlaw, Doncaster and Mexborough. In the past, kind and generous donations from patients, local residents and partners have enabled us to purchase things such as adaptive equipment for frail and elderly patients, toys for youngsters staying on our wards, as well as helping us to purchase innovative and specialist diagnosis and treatment tools. These contributions often make the difference for patients staying with us from the small things such as providing a comforting teddy bear for a youngster spending time away from their family for the first time, to the big, such as helping to renovate an entire day room, giving patients a destination to head for, spending time away from their bed and actively participating in recovery. 3 What this means for #TeamDBTH By launching DBTH Charity, we are hoping to make it really easy for anyone who is looking to raise funds for our hospitals. While we are appealing to the public to support the Trust, we also want to extend this offer to you, and ask that you consider our new charity for your next fundraising flourish. This could include: Arranging a bake sale Challenging yourself to a 5k, 10k or even a marathon Taking on a sponsored sky-dive or a similar feat of daring-do Organising a swanky gala night with charitable auction. The Communications and Engagement team have been hard-at-work creating posters, stickers and other items to help if you wish to fundraise for the Trust. Get in touch with team for further support at dbth.charity@nhs.net The aim of the charity is to raise funds to enhance the lives of thousands of patients every year by providing excellent care, treatment, experience and research, above and beyond normal funding. This is also about supporting members of Team DBTH, encouraging you to make bids on these funds to provide those extra comforts or treatments. We intend to make the process of bidding for funding much easier. If you wish to put forward a case for charitable funds, speak to your Head of Nursing or General Manager who will assist in the development of a business case (if a large amount of funding is required) to be presented to the Corporate Investment Group for sign-off. Go above and beyond! For all questions related to charitable funds contact Ann.Tovey@nhs.net, Diane. blundell@nhs.net and Kerry.Stewart@nhs.net. If you wish to raise funds, donate or for more info head to dbth.nhs.uk/charity (available 8 May) for more details. Please join us in supporting this exciting new venture for the Trust, and help us go above and beyond for our patients. Above and beyond Visit 3
4 Sharing how we care conference Last week saw the hosting of our inaugural Sharing How We Care conference at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. With almost around 100 members of Team DBTH in attendance, the event was a huge success, garnering some fantastic feedback from those who took part in the day. The conference opened with special guest, Dr Kate Allatt, a motivational speaker who experienced a stroke in Suffering locked-in syndrome, Kate is a passionate advocate of ensuring that clinicians remain at their best regardless of a patient s condition, ensuring staff remain positive throughout, ultimately delivering the best experience possible for those they are caring for. With a number of pledges made by attendees to think differently, the event will return next year. Fully funded PhD opportunities Two Clinical Academic Nurse/Midwife/Allied Health Professionals posts are due to be advertised very soon! A PhD training programme has been developed in partnership with DBTH and The University of Sheffield (UoS). This opportunity will be competitively offered to at least one nurse and the second one opened up to all other health professionals. This will be a permanent post (minimum 30 hours per wk). The programme will allow the post holder to maintain their clinical practice (up to two days a week) and complete a PhD (three days a week) over four and a half years. The three days PhD time will funded at band five (Agenda for Change), with remaining clinical hours funded at current banding. This will be advertised as an internal post imminently through NHS jobs. If you require any further details please contact Julie Bury, Research Fellow Julie.bury@nhs.net Foundations for Health The latest edition of the Trust s quarterly newsletter is available to read here. 5 Team DBTH s award nominees Last week, members of Team DBTH were nominated for awards, with respective ceremonies taking place on Tuesday and Thursday. First-up was our recent flu vaccination campaign Flu Wars, which was nominated for NHS Employers Flu Fighter Awards, in the category of Social and Digital media. Inspired by a galaxy, far, far away, 2017 s drive to ensure front-line staff had access to the flu jab was a huge success, with DBTH coming first nationally, once again, in vaccinating 75% of all patient-facing team members. Slightly later in the week was the Student Nursing Times Awards, in which our Education Lead, Aimi Dillon, was nominated for Learner of the Year. A member of Team DBTH for over 10 years, Aimi has recently completed a Post-Graduate Degree, focusing her study on how we, as an organisation, can improve the experience for those Newly Qualified Nurses who join us each March and September. Unfortunately, while we made it to the finals of these awards, neither team nor individual was crowned the winner on this particular occasion. Although it would have been nice to have achieved a small trophy in recognition of our efforts, I wanted to express how proud I am, not only as Director of People and Organisational Development, but also as a member of Team DBTH, regarding these nominations as well as the multitude awards nods we receive every single year. As an organisation we have much to be proud of, exampled within the care we provide each and every day, showcased in events such as last week s Sharing How We Care conference and exhibited by every single one of you each time you come into work. Undeterred, I m happy to report that the Communications and Engagement Team, along with Occupational Health and Wellbeing, are already plotting their next campaign for this year, while I m also assured that this will just be one of many nominations Aimi will receive during her career, both as an individual and as a member of our exemplary Education Team. I think this is also a good opportunity to remind everyone of our monthly Star Awards, and I encourage you to nominate those individuals and teams which make a huge difference. 6 Widening Access to Training Scheme In May last year we let you all know about the Widening Access Training Scheme (WATS) and the potential for you to obtain a refund for tax and national insurance if you studied on a qualifying scheme. Since then, a number of you have applied, been successful with your applications and received a refund. If you have not already considered if you have been on a qualifying scheme the criteria below may help you determine if you are entitled to such an award: Were you employed by the NHS as a trainee on or after 1 September 1999? Have you undertaken a full-time education course (typically of three years duration) at university, technical college or similar educational establishment whilst remaining a paid employee of DBTH, or its predecessor organisations? Did the course require you to have at least 20 weeks attendance per academic year? If you answered 'yes' to all the above questions you may be eligible to receive a refund of national insurance and tax on income that should have been exempt during your training scheme. Claims can only be submitted to the organisation you were employed at during the training period. If you think you may be entitled to a refund, please complete the template, which you can find on the intranet alert bar, and return it via to dbth.wats@nhs.net. Once they have received and verified your details and deemed your training to be covered by WATS, the team will submit the information to HMRC on your behalf. The HMRC will then assess whether a refund payment is due to you. Any refund of tax and National Insurance contributions due will be made directly to you by HMRC. For training that commenced on or after April 2013, you will receive the refund from the Trust appearing on your pay slip. Please note, due to the high volume of claims you may have to wait a number of weeks between the submission of your information and any refund being made. If you get a refund of National Insurance contributions you might find that your National Insurance record held by the HMRC shows a contribution gap and this could affect your entitlement to state pension and benefits. You can check this by contacting the HMRC employee helpline on If after contacting the helpline you wish to make up any shortfall in your National Insurance contributions you can pay voluntary contributions. More information on making voluntary contributions can be found here. Any changes to your income can also affect your entitlement to tax credits. More information on whether a refund will affect your tax credits can be found here. If you have any questions, please dbth.wats@nhs.net Remember your fire training Please make sure you have attended a Fire Safety Training session. These are drop-in sessions taking place on all three sites, dates are advertised on the Intranet here. You are required to attend face-to-face lectures every 12 months as part of your SET training. 6

12 The DBTH position on Wholly Owned Subsidiaries Over the past number of weeks and months, you may have heard about Wholly Owned Subsidiaries (WOS) within the NHS. What you need to know In short, these are organisations set-up externally to an NHS Foundation Trust, but still within the ownership of the organisation. In doing so, trusts report flexibility around working terms and conditions, greater income generation, wider prospects in areas like apprenticeships, opportunities around procurement and tendering, as well as being able to reduce tax costs. A number of NHS trusts are currently exploring this model, while some have already adopted this way of working such as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and locally at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Our position as a Trust At the Trust, we are focused upon delivering the best patient care, whilst also providing value for money, and as such we would always explore options which would help us to achieve these goals. With that said, our position as an organisation remains unchanged and no decisions have been made regarding implementing a WOS at DBTH. When will we know more In March, a discussion was held by our directors on the theory, opportunities and risks of setting up a WOS. Union representatives were invited to attend and engage in this discussion, expressing their views on this matter. As an exploratory session, no decisions were made and no preferences expressed. If our position changes in the future, rest-assured members of Team DBTH will be kept up-to-date and any proposals would require formal talks with our Board of Directors, Council of Governors and staff, as well as union representatives. 12
13 DBTH midwives work with aspire for drug awareness day On Thursday 26 April, Aspire Drug and Alcohol Services repeated 2017 s successful Maternity Drug Awareness sessions at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI). Similar to last year s event, the team worked closely with our Midwives and Support Workers to explore the various problems that need to be considered when dealing with addiction. The emphasis of the discussions was on how to reduce harm, support families through times of hardship and generally motivate people to improve their lives. The session consisted of an informative presentation, an interactive speed-dating activity and a moving personal account from a former addict. As you can see from the below picture, this was yet another insightful experience for the Trust, one that emphasised the importance of being compassionate and proactive when working with patients with substance abuse issues. Julie Shaw and Lynne Crewe, our Maternity Education Team, stated that the feedback from the Midwives had been overwhelmingly positive. They said: Members of Team DBTH thoroughly enjoyed the day, finding discussions useful and agreeing and heightened awareness of issues would undoubtedly enhance their practice. Our maternity units are constantly striving to improve our quality of care and this collaborative working and sharing of knowledge can only have a positive impact for our women and their families. We are hoping to run further sessions later in the year and would like to give a huge thank you to the Aspire Team for helping us make this happen.
