This month focuses on the importance of protecting yourselves and others from heart disease. It s about learning how to live a healthier, heart-friendly lifestyle and being aware of each of the risk factors associated with the number one cause of death in the U.S. One of the ways Medical West will celebrate National Heart Month is by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3rd. All employees are invited to wear a red shirt in honor of this special day. If you do not have a red shirt, you may pick up a red ribbon from the Marketing Office. We will also host our first Senior Care Luncheon of 2017 on Friday, February 17th at the Bessemer Civic Center. Dr. Kristen Michael will be speaking about hypertension and guests will be able to participate in free blood pressure and BMI screenings. For those participating in Scale Back Alabama, I congratulate you on taking steps to improve your overall heart health through exercise and healthy eating. Best of luck to each of you! Even if you are not participating in Scale Back Alabama, I encourage you to start the new year by making healthy choices. Whether it s trying the weekly Scale Back Special in the cafeteria or walking during your breaks (see the Medical West Walking Map on page 3), you are sure to feel better mentally and physically. Lastly, we are teaming up with the American Heart Association and CBS 42 to spread heart health awareness to our surrounding community. I would like to thank Dr. Andrea Shirey and Dr. Brad Goodman for speaking about the importance of keeping a healthy heart during CBS 42 s news segments this month. Tune in on February 9th to learn more about National Heart Month and ways you can continue to live a heart-healthy lifestyle. I hope we can take the opportunity this month to become more aware of our hearts and take any steps necessary to prevent heart disease in ourselves, our families and the patients we care for. Thanks for all you do, Keith Pennington, CEO and President january employee of the month Page 11

It will help you strengthen your bones, control your weight, and condition your heart and lungs. Research has shown that people who walk approximately miles per week outlive those who don t walk by several years. STAFF PARKING WAREHOUSE PARKING DECK Here are some quick facts about walking: On average, every minute of walking can extend your life by 1.5 to 2 minutes. EMERGENCY DEPT. Walking an extra 20 minutes each day will burn off 7 pounds of body fat per year. To burn off 1 plain M&M candy, you need to walk the full length of a football field. PROFESSIONAL OFFICE BUILDING MAIN HOSPITAL Longer, moderately-paced daily walks (40 minutes at 60% to 65% maximum heart rate) are best for losing weight. MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING Shorter, faster walks (20-25 minutes at 75% to 85% maximum heart rate) are best for conditioning your heart and lungs. POB SQUARE HOSPITAL STROLL SCENIC ROUTE DISTANCE: ½ MILE - INDOOR (6-15 minutes) DISTANCE: 1 MILE - INDOOR (12-25 minutes) DISTANCE: 1 MILE - OUTDOOR (12-25 minutes) Head up to the 3rd, 4th, or 5th Floors of the Professional Office Building (POB) to enjoy this quiet, easy stroll. 13 laps around one floor = ½ mile. 6 HEALTH YOUR HEALTH Cheesy Baked Spaghetti Squash Boats with Grilled Chicken Roasted spaghetti squashed topped with marinara sauce, grilled chicken, melted mozzarella and some fresh basil! It s Amore! INGREDIENTS: 2 small/medium ripe spaghetti squash salt and fresh pepper, to taste 4 thin chicken cutlets, about 3oz each pinch of garlic powder ¼ tsp oregano 2 cups marinara sauce, warm 1 cup part skim shredded mozzarella DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350. Cut the squash in half lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and fibers with a spoon. Place on a baking sheet, cut side up and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast about an hour or until the skin gives easily under pressure and the inside is tender. If you prefer the microwave, cut squash in half lengthwise, scoop out seeds and fibers and place on a microwave safe dish and cover. Microwave 8-9 minutes. Meanwhile, while the squash is roasting, season chicken cutlets with salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano. Heat a grill pan (or a George formal grill) over mediumhigh heat, when hot grill chicken on both sides until cooked through, about 3-5 minutes. Set aside on a dish. Remove the spaghetti squash from the oven or microwave and carefully fluff the spaghetti-like strands on each half with a fork, leaving the squash in the shell. Season with salt and pepper, then spoon about 1/4 cup marinara in each boat. Slice the chicken on the diagonal and place each piece on top of each squash half. Top the chicken with 1/4 cup each of remaining marinara sauce, then top with cheese and place back into the hot oven and cook until the cheese is melted and the sauce is hot, about 12 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with parmesan cheese on the side if desired. 6 source:
