3 Introduction Summerdale offers 24 hour residential care to 23 older people. It is close to local shops and a main bus route and has appropriate access and car parking. The accommodation consists of a traditional, two-storey Victorian building, with a modern extension where all bedrooms have en-suite toilet facilities. There are also four self-contained chalet style bungalows in the grounds. The environment is homelike and comfortable. Basis of Report This report was written following an unannounced visit, which took place on the evening of 8th February The inspection was carried out by Mattie Crossley, Care Commission Officer. The Inspection focused on The Regulation of Care (Requirements as to Care Services) (Scotland) Regulations 2002, Statutory Instrument 114. The purpose of the inspection was to particularly focus on the recommendation made at the last inspection with regard to infection control.national Care Standards particularly Standard 5 was taken into account. The recommendation in the last report was ; (1) It is recommended that there is a review of the infection control practice in the home. This review must result in; a. Bathrooms and equipment such as hoists and vents contained within being cleaned on a basis that is thorough and frequent enough to ensure high standards of cleanliness at all times. Replacement of such equipment that may present a hazard such as chipped toilet seats. b. Suitable infection control materials being made available to all such as i) gloves that are not latex or have evidence of a full risk assessment having taken place prior to use.and ii) appropriate soap for routine cleansing and antibacterial soap for kitchen staff and all staff at the time of a suspected outbreak. Reference National Care Standards 5 SSI 114, 4d. This recommendation has been addressed and is commmented upon in the body of this report. 5 Regulations / Principles Regulation 4: SSI 114 Regulation 4 (1) Welfare of Users Strengths The depute manager outlined plans to review the present infection control procedures and explained that they are in the process of gathering additional current literature to ensure that policies and procedures reflect current best practice. There has also been ongoing liaison with the Infection Control Adviser. There are arrangements in place for all staff to access infection control training in the form of a three session course delivered by Aberdeen University. The recommendations in the last report have been addressed or are in the process of being addressed as per timescales agreed in the action plan. 6 Enforcement There has been no enforcement action in this home Other Information On arrival at the home the environment was clean, warm,comfortable and home like. Residents all appeared well kempt and were choosing to have a bath or shower, watch TV have a snack and a cup of tea etc. One gentleman described to me the party that he had jsut enjoyed for his birthday. Staff were seen to have good quality interaction with service users offering assisstance and reassurance and also engaging in general conversations and sharing humour.
