2 Washington Ave. S. Grant Ave. medication barcoding >> A Nationwide Children s Employee Publication :: Kim Dwyer Editor :: Doug Edwards Graphic Designer :: Brad Smith Photographer :: Dan Smith Photographer Pizza Pizzazz march s april s In April of 2009, the J4 NICU began using a bar code system to track and ensure accuracy in administering breast milk to babies. Now, exactly two years later, a bar code scanning system is being used on all inpatient units and in the ED as an additional safety measure for medication delivery. How does it work? Bar coding is a great example of the Quality, Safety and Service aspect of our strategic plan, ensuring that the right medication is dispensed to the right patient. Because of it s focus on safety, the bar coding system has strong ties to Zero Hero, especially since medication errors play a major role on our preventable harm index. The system also highlights the hospital s One Team value. Multiple groups (Pharmacy, Nursing, Clinical Services, IS, Education, Patient Registration, Professional Development and BPI) have come together to plan a seamless switchover that will better serve our patients. Nationwide Children s own Kristofer Morrison, senior coordinator for the Food Court, recently participated in the North American Pizza & Ice Cream Show s 2011 Pizza Pizzazz competition. His mushroom pizza placed 20 out of 55. Look for it every other Thursday in the Food Court! The nurse obtains the medication from the unit medication room and takes it to the patient s bedside. The nurse visually checks the 5 Rights (the right medication, for the right patient, at the right time, the right amount and the right route of administration). The nurse then scans the patient s armband and then the medication to be administered. This scanning process electronically verifies the same 5 rights. If anything doesn t match the written order in Epic, the nurse will receive alerts and she will stop the process and investigate prior to administration. Since the beginning of the year, Nationwide Children s has attracted a lot of attention for our new sugared beverages policy. Kathy Grover in Nutrition Services and Cathy Ray in the Gift Shop have gotten calls from people across the country looking to make the same changes in their hospital or organization. Looks like the hospital s efforts to increase wellness are also shaping up to be a great example of how the hospital is moving from a state of followership into national leadership. downtown CTH OATA award cure kids cancer radiothon On March 21, Community-Based Behavioral Health moved to our new Downtown Close To Home SM Center at 399 E. Main St., a mile from its old location at 899 E. Broad St. There s a parking lot next to the building. For more information, call (614) The Ohio Athletic Trainers Association would like to honor and congratulate one of its members, Lisa Kluchursoky, who is being awarded the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association Dedicated Service Award. Lisa is the program manager for Sports Medicine at Nationwide Children s. Come see your favorite radio DJs in the main hospital lobby during the sixth annual Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon. On April 21 and 22, Power 107.5, Joy 106.3, Magic 98.9 and their listeners will raise money for cancer and blood disease programs and research at Nationwide Children s Hospital. In fact, we have managed to capture attention from the Cleveland Clinic (they have also made similar changes at their hospital), The Ohio State University Prevention Research Center (they want to develop a training course for practitioners on how to change policy) and the State of Ohio (they are interested in the policy for their public buildings and rest stops). That s not all! After hearing about our change, The Coca-Cola Company asked if it could send a small group from Atlanta to visit our hospital. During the visit, Coca-Cola hopes to work with us to find out how they can create a program for other hospitals wanting to offer healthier drinks. Wellness Promotion One Way Ends Here E. 3 The Voice of PediaCast Dr. Mike Patrick, Nationwide Children s ED physician, created his first podcast five years ago. One hundred and fifty-seven podcasts later, his popular series, titled Pediacast, has listeners across the globe and is one of the most downloaded pediatric health casts on itunes. Focused on providing parents with answers to questions they didn t get to ask their doctor during a regular visit, these podcasts are easy to follow, entertaining and bursting with current health-related news topics. When I m working on a new script, says Dr. Mike, I am always asking myself, what do parents want to know right now? From food allergies to tanning beds, Pediacast delivers the latest evidence-based information available while dispelling any common misconceptions due to poor research that is also circulating. The information in the podcasts is for educational purposes only, said Dr. Mike. It s not possible to give medical advice for specific situations, so this is for parents general education. Although he spent time here as a resident some years ago, Dr. Mike started at Nationwide Children s in February as a unique hybrid employee. He spends two full days each week working in the marketing department on his podcasts and some social media efforts. The rest of the time, he is working shifts in the Emergency Department fast-track and the hospital s area urgent cares. I m thrilled with this opportunity I ve been given, especially because I don t know of any other children s hospitals doing this. With a new podcast available every week or two, Dr. Mike is able to cover a wide range of topics. What s next? I m looking forward to bringing some specialists and experts onto the show and doing interviews, said Dr. Mike. I want Pediacast to be a resource for local pediatricians who can then point patients in our direction to find quality information. Podcast Central Dr. Mike isn t the only doctor at Nationwide Children s producing informationpacked podcasts. Back in October of 2009, Spotlight featured Dr. Rick McClead s series, Children s on Quality, that takes a look at quality issues affecting pediatric health care across the country. Why PediaCasts? More patients and parents than ever before are surfing the Internet in search of credible health information. At one point, scrolling through copy-heavy pages of medical text was the only option, but now consumers are looking for new ways to absorb the information without having to spend precious hours in front of a computer screen. The answer: podcasting. Essentially, a podcast is an electronic version of an individual reading or speaking. These files are just like music files and can be played on ipods and MP3 players as well as streamed through your cell phone or other devices. By supplying information in a format that the listener can easily incorporate into their daily routine, podcasters are successfully connecting with a growing audience. Through podcasts, Nationwide Children s is putting helpful information into the hands of people who may never come through our doors another giant leap in our quest to create optimal health for all children. In fact, these two doctors have a history! When Dr. Mike was a resident at Nationwide Children s, Dr. McClead was one of his teachers as an attending in the NICU. Lately, these two microphone men have gotten back in touch to compare notes on production and distribution. To find podcasts by either doctor, simply do a Google search for Pediacast or Children s on Quality, or you can visit itunes to download Pediacast. children who are wishful thinkers report more lingering symptoms after mild concussion Study Investigates Link between Coping Strategies and Post-Concussive Outcomes The type of coping strategy a child uses may impact his/her interpretation of symptoms after experiencing a mild traumatic brain injury, according to research published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society. Mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI), also commonly termed concussions, are characterized by loss of consciousness, confusion or disorientation lasting less than 30 minutes. Although recent reviews have suggested that mild TBI have little effect on children, few studies have focused specifically on what are commonly referred to as post-concussive symptoms, which include a range of somatic, cognitive, affective and behavioral complaints. Although symptoms typically characterized as post-concussive are not specific to mild TBI and occur frequently in the general population and in individuals with injuries not involving the head, research has repeatedly demonstrated that they are more common and severe in children with mild TBI. The reasons why some but not all children with mild TBI display postconcussive symptoms are unclear, said Keith O. Yeates, PhD, director of the Center for Biobehavioral Health and one of the study authors. Injury severity accounts for some of the variability in post-concussive symptoms. However, psychological factors such as coping strategies are also likely to play a role. In children and adolescents, coping involves deliberate actions to manage one s environment, thoughts and emotions when presented with a stressor. Research in adults suggests that coping strategies are related to post-concussive symptoms and psychosocial outcomes in both mild and severe TBI. To determine whether coping strategies may moderate the occurrence of postconcussive symptoms following mild TBI, investigators at Nationwide Children s Hospital and Rainbow Babies and Children s Hospital in Cleveland compared coping strategies and post-concussive symptom reports of children with mild TBI to reports of children who experienced an arm or leg fracture, over the first year after their injury. They found that effects of mild TBI on children s post-concussive symptoms are most pronounced when children endorse higher levels of problem-focused disengagement as their coping strategy. Problem-focused disengagement involves managing stress by passive avoidance and wishful thinking. Clinically, the results suggest that interventions designed to prevent or alleviate post-concussive symptoms should focus on identification of children with mild TBI who use maladaptive coping strategies and help them develop strategies that encourage problemfocused engagement, said Dr. Yeates. Overall, our study demonstrates that injury-related factors alone are not likely to be sufficient in accounting for postconcussive symptoms following mild TBI, but that child characteristics, such as coping strategies, also contribute to injury outcomes
4 To Dayton To Cleveland To Cincinnati NORTH To Wheeling ChildLab expands throughout Ohio Nationwide Children s longstanding resource, ChildLab, is expanding its reaches throughout Ohio to meet a need in communities beyond central Ohio. As one of the nation s leading pediatric reference labs, ChildLab has provided laboratory results to central Ohio patients and families for years. In 2010, ChildLab expanded its services into northeastern and southwestern Ohio for the patients and families in those areas. New Centers Established: Canton Parma Westlake Mason Several new locations are on the horizon in 2011, including a Lima location and additional Cleveland and Cincinnati locations as well as an expansion of Springfield s current ChildLab site. Further plans for growth include developing partnerships with other children s hospitals throughout the nation. ChildLab s expansion is a great example of the strategic plan s operational performance ray. webmail facelift IS is upgrading the hospital s webmail logon portal. Below are some of the key changes: Security Options: In order to prevent private information from being shared when you are on a public computer (library, internet café, etc.), select the shared computer option and a limited amount of information will be cached after you log off and close the browser. If you are on a computer you trust (NCH computer, home computer, etc.), you can select the private computer option and that data will remain in the computer s cache. Light Version of Outlook Web App: Internet Explorer users will now be able to select the light version if they do not feel the need to use the advanced interface. Microsoft no longer calls this Outlook Web Access; it is now called Outlook Web App. Logon Information: Users will need to precede their user names with their domain. See the instructions on the logon page for more information. Over the next couple of months, users of current non-internet Explorer browsers (i.e. Safari, Mozilla, Firefox and Chrome) will be able to access the premium version of Outlook. This is a major time saver for certain users and will be available soon. January Maria Klemack- McGraw, Interpretation Services Maria exhibited the true meaning of familycentered care when she and her husband, Bob, welcomed a couple from El Salvador into their home for eight weeks while their child underwent surgery at Nationwide Children s. Maria and her husband received the family after presenting their story to the Grove City Noon Lions Club, which officially sponsored them. With the help of her husband, Maria was a helpful resource to the family, and provided food, lodging and transportation until the child s recovery was complete. Maria is a wonderful example of a hospital employee who takes care far beyond Nationwide Children s doors. February Sandy Lindsey FACES Sandy is a gifted artist who continually goes above and beyond for the patients, families and staff involved with the FACES program. She loves sharing her skills with budding artists, and has helped patients to begin the healing process while improving their self-esteem. Sandy has been the main drive behind the Nationwide Children s World AIDS event each December, and stores and takes all of the patient artwork to be viewed and presented at nurses conferences. She devotes numerous personal and weekend hours to FACES and always shows compassion for the wellbeing of our patients. March Todd Heslep Transport Team Todd Heslep went the extra mile for a mother and her newborn baby and arranged to have them see each other for the first time. The mother was in critical condition at The Ohio State Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), and her premature baby was at St. Ann s Hospital. After taking the time to plan carefully and by making arrangements with both units and physicians, Todd received assurance that the baby could be brought to the mother. The newborn was then transported to The Ohio State Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Todd s heartfelt work is an example of family-centered care at its finest.
