Celebrating 100 Years of Caring Our Hospital s Mission: To Serve. To Care. To Heal. What started out one hundred years ago as the vision of 14 dedicated physicians to build a community hospital, has turned into a century of Serving, Caring and Healing, at Salem Community Hospital. September 13, 2013, marks 100 years since crowds arrived in horse drawn carriages to celebrate the opening of a new hospital. A Look at Our Past and Future The Early Years: A Hospital is Born On September 13, 1913, the Hospital opened under the leadership of Mrs. Nelle Templeton, R.N., who became the first administrator and superintendent. The Hospital was designed to accommodate 70 patients; but had not yet been fully equipped when the staff was called upon to care for its first patients. Within 24 hours of the doors opening, 13 people with typhoid fever were admitted and 2 operations were scheduled. However, Mrs. Templeton made sure that the patients needs were met. On the first day of the hospital s operation, 13 very sick people were admitted, and most of them had typhoid fever. We had to borrow pans from the neighbors in order to wash the patients. Pans and other equipment had been ordered, but hadn t arrived in time. ~Nelle Templeton, R.N., in 1963 Salem News interview. Since that time, our staff has had the privilege of caring for hundreds of thousands of area residents marking the realization of a dream of 14 physicians and the strong support from our surrounding communities. As Salem Community Hospital (SCH) reaches its milestone 100th year of caring, we continue to remain committed to meeting the needs of our communities, through our proud heritage of service dating back to In this issue: Celebrating 100 Years of Caring SCH Welcomes Physicians Growing for Our Next Century First SCH Baby Becomes Reporter On May 6, 1914, the Hospital welcomed its first baby, David McConnell, who later became a political reporter for the New York Herald Tribune. When his mother, Mary Bonsall McConnell went to the Hospital to have her baby, she didn t go far from home. The property on which the Hospital stands once belonged to her family; and she and her husband, David, had been married in what used to be the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing, which was directly across the street from the Hospital at that time.
100 Years of Advanced Technology Throughout our 100-year history, Salem Community Hospital has been dedicated to providing the latest medical technology and services to meet our patients changing health care needs. This commitment to innovation and medical advancements can be traced back to our early beginnings. In 1913, Dr. Stanton Heck, head of the Hospital s X-ray department and one of the original 14 medical staff members, recognized the value of imaging technology to detect and treat disease. He financed the purchase of x-ray film and x-ray tubes himself, giving patients local access to this important innovation. Dr. Heck later became a national pioneer in the x-ray industry and invented a stereoscopic fluoroscope machine used in World War I. Dr. Heck s foresight and dedication to providing advanced medical technology have been the foundation for several decades of innovations to the Hospital s facilities and equipment. Today, SCH continues this long-standing tradition of providing state-of-the-art medical imaging technology, such as our Dual-128 Slice CT Scanner and the area s only 3T Open MRI, used for specialized imaging of the spine, breast, prostate, liver, brain and extremities. This advanced technology, combined with new services such as our Wound Healing Center, featuring two hyperbaric chambers; our low-dose CT lung cancer screening; and our Behavioral Medicine and Wellness Center, enable SCH to meet the changing health care needs of area residents. Wound Healing Center s Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber A Legacy of Caring: Cindy Louise Saturday Since the Hospital s opening day, it has been a safety net of care for local residents. This was especially true on October 11, 1958, when nurses Florence McCartney, L.P.N., and Helen Troy, R.N., discovered a baby girl left abandoned on the steps outside of the Hospital. The baby remained at the Hospital for 5 days before being placed for adoption, and during that time, the nursing staff cared for her, naming her Cindy Louise Saturday. Thirty years later, Helen Troy was contacted by Christine Johnson, who identified herself as the abandoned child by telling the story of Cindy Louise Saturday. Both Troy and McCartney then had the opportunity to meet Cindy, who expressed her gratitude to the women who nurtured and protected her at a critical time in her life. 2 Pictured left to right are: Christine s adoptive mother; Florence McCartney; Christine Johnson and Helen Troy
Next Decades Bring Growth 1948: A new wing was added increasing patient capacity to 108 beds and 24 bassinets. 1956: The Hospital campus expanded to include a power plant, laundry and pharmacy. 1963: Construction of the east wing increased bed capacity to 150; and provided a chapel, lobby, outpatient waiting room and treatment rooms. 1969: The Central Clinic and Salem City Hospital Association merged to form the 210-bed Northern Columbiana County Community Hospital Association (NCCCHA) : Hospital services were consolidated into one building complex, and 42 patient beds were added, as well as a new Outpatient Diagnostic and Emergency Treatment Department and an additional operating suite. A New Name Launches a New Era In 1984, the NCCCHA underwent a name change to become Salem Community Hospital. Under its new name, the Hospital continued its path of progress through continued enhancements to its facilities and services. For example, in the 1990s, the maternity unit was redesigned to become the New Beginnings Family Care Center, and a 10,000 square-foot expansion of the Emergency Department was completed. New Beginnings Family Care Center Salem Medical Center The Hospital s main campus underwent a $15.1 million expansion in 2003, creating a three-story addition to the front of the Hospital, the Salem Medical Center and an elevated walkway spanning East State Street. (Continued next page) The Columbiana Medical Center Providing community outreach and accessible medical care to surrounding areas has been a continued commitment: The Columbiana Medical Center opened in 2000, housing satellite facilities of the Hospital s Rehabilitation, Medical Imaging and Laboratory Services, as well as physicians offices.
Next Decades Bring Growth (Continued) (Continued from page 3) This new addition housed a new Lobby and Gift Shop, Outpatient areas, and Intensive and Coronary Care Unit; while the Salem Medical Center included an expanded Rehabilitation Services Department, the Salem Sleep Center and physicians offices. The Surgery Center In 2006, a state-of-the-art Central Power Plant was constructed on Pershing Street to support the Hospital s growing infrastructure needs. Three years later, The Surgery Center at Salem Community Hospital opened with seven, state-of-the-art surgical suites. In July 2012, ground was broken for a new 87bed, $42.5 million patient bed tower on the east side of the Hospital s campus. (Please see page 6 for more information about the bed tower, scheduled to open in early 2014.) Supporting Our Region: Mission-Driven Care Surgery Center Operating Room From July 1, June 30, 2013, the Hospital provided comprehensive health care services including: 27,490 Emergency Department visits 4,937 admissions 3,568 surgeries 494 births Leader in the Local Economy Charity Care Provided by SCH ($ in millions) $11.5 $10.4 $10.6 $11.1 $9.3 SCH employs nearly 1,000 staff members. Each Hospital job supports about two more jobs in our local communities, and every dollar spent by the Hospital creates additional economic value in goods and services of approximately $2.30 in new business activity. Each year, governmental programs reimburse hospitals less than the actual cost of care provided. As health care reform progresses, this shortfall will continue to grow. However, Salem Community Hospital is committed to serving as a safety net of care for our communities. (Background Photo: Salem City Hospital Association)
Leading SCH into Our Next Century of Caring: Anita Hackstedde, M.D. One hundred years ago, Nelle Templeton, R.N., served as the Hospital s first administrator, launching our proud tradition of caring for our communities. Although Salem Community Hospital has seen tremendous changes over the past century, including expanded facilities, new services and technological advancements; some things come full circle as we enter our second century under the leadership of Anita Hackstedde, M.D. Appointed as the Hospital s Interim President/CEO in August, Dr. Hackstedde will continue to build upon SCH s long-standing legacy of high-quality, patientcentered care. Since joining the SCH staff in 2006 as the Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Hackstedde has demonstrated valuable leadership abilities as the administrative head of the SCH Professional Corporation, along with overseeing the functions of the Medical Staff Office, Physician Relations, Quality Improvement, Infection Control, Risk Management and Laboratory Services. She recently led the Hospital s initiative to successfully implement an electronic medical record, which is designed to improve patient safety and the management of patient information. What a privilege it is to share in this 100-year legacy of caring for our communities. Anita Hackstedde, M.D. Interim President/CEO Our Board of Directors, physicians, volunteers and staff all share the same commitment that our forefathers did of caring for the needs of our patients by providing high quality, compassionate care that is enhanced with innovation and advanced technology. On behalf of our entire Hospital family, we are proud to be a part of this rich tradition and history of caring for the communities we serve. New Physicians Serving Our Communities Salem Community Hospital recently welcomed Thomesha Barton, M.D., and Jonathan Pulido, M.D., as new members of the SCH Medical Staff. Jonathan Pulido, M.D., General Surgeon, has joined Salem General Surgery and SCH s Wound Healing Center. As a General Surgeon, Dr. Pulido performs a variety of advanced surgical procedures including endoscopies, colorectal, breast, and laparoscopic surgeries.
