3 Course Specific Competencies: Each student who receives a passing grade in this course will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas, to a degree commensurate with the grade received. 1. Use Gordon s functional health patterns as a basis for assessment with emphasis on adult clients with dysfunctional behavioral health patterns. 2. Provide safe nursing care while maintaining previously learned skills and acquiring additional essential skills that adhere to critical criteria. 3. Apply the nursing process to clinical decision-making and the management of care of clients with dysfunctional behavioral health patterns. 4. Utilize therapeutic communication techniques with clients, families, significant others, and members of the health care team. 5. Value caring by exhibiting spontaneous caring behaviors in nursing practice. 6. Incorporate professional behaviors according to the standards of nursing practice in the delivery of client care and self-improvement. 7. Implement teaching-learning processes into the management of client care. 8. Participate in a collaborative team approach to provide holistic client entered care. Lab Competencies: (Enter N/A if this does not apply.) In addition to the critical criteria identified for each skill, the following will be used in the evaluation of the student s performance: *Denotes individual faculty check-off. General Principles 1. Body substance isolation precautions must be utilized and appropriate asepsis must be maintained. 2. Correct supplies/equipment must be assembled and organized. 3. The nursing process must be used. 4. Client instruction must be provided. 5. The client must not be placed in physical jeopardy. 6. The client must not be placed in emotional jeopardy. 7. Pertinent information must be reported and/or documented.

4 *Safety Practices 1. Verifies care/orders for client. 2. Washes hands before and after performing any client care or gathering supplies. 3. Verifies facility policy for procedure and assembles appropriate equipment or supplies. 4. Identifies client and assesses overall conditions. 5. Explains procedures to client. 6. Elevates bed to appropriate working level. 7. Practices body substance isolation precautions. 8. Lowers bed, applies side rails according to plan of care and places call system within reach. 9. Reassesses any abnormal reading and if still abnormal, reports and records immediately. The student is expected to utilize safety practices and provision for privacy when performing all essential skill. Documentation for all skills must include date, time, signature and other appropriate data. Any action or inaction on the part of the student which jeopardizes the emotional or physical well-being of the client will result in an unsatisfactory grade for the skill. *Standard Precautions (Body Substance Isolation) *Therapeutic Communication 1. Identifies dynamics of coping behavior/defense mechanisms in clients and self. 2. Identifies manifestations of behavioral deviations. 3. Identifies therapeutic interventions. 4. Utilizes interpersonal communication techniques in individual and/or group settings. 5. Evaluates effectiveness of one's own communication with clients, colleagues and others. Both scheduled labs and lab appointments will be considered in the student s clinical progress evaluation. All students must be on time and remain in the lab the entire time during scheduled times unless excused by the Laboratory Instructional Specialist or Nursing Faculty. All students must checkout when leaving lab. Students are required to complete all essential skills for NSG 212 at 100% proficiency of critical criteria. Demonstration of the essential skills and initial practice sessions will be scheduled by the Lab Instructional Specialist and the Nursing Faculty. It will be the student s responsibility to practice after this initial demonstration/discussion. Students will participate in at least two practice sessions with another student and/or Instructional Specialist or Faculty and will document all signatures as required on the Essential Skills-Critical Criteria Sheet for each skill. In the event that a student must be absent or tardy for a scheduled lab time, the student must notify the Laboratory Instructional Specialist/Faculty by 8:30 a.m. of the day of the appointment. Tardiness or absence from a scheduled laboratory experience will be treated as a clinical tardy or absence. Campus nursing laboratory experiences will be considered in the student s weekly clinical progress and final clinical evaluation. Clinical evaluations Technology/Media Component: NSG 212 is a web-enhanced course utilizing the Blackboard platform to assist students in the learning process. Blackboard can be accessed through the Big Sandy Community and Technical College website at I-Pad, Laptop and/or desk top computer testing Companion websites for required textbooks including and any CD-ROMs that accompany textbooks communication for NSG 212 should be through your BSCTC student . should be read daily. Maintenance of each student s account is the student s responsibility, such as emptying regularly in order to access new messages. Service-Learning: Students may be assigned a service learning project based on the content of this course. Classroom Civility: In order to facilitate the process of meeting course requirements, students are expected to maintain civility in the classroom, campus laboratory, and clinical facility. There will be a notolerance policy of disruptive or uncivil behavior toward another student, faculty, or hospital staff. This behavior is considered to be any disruptive communication, the use of electronic devices, entering the classroom after class has begun, leaving the classroom before class is dismissed and any other disruptive behavior as deemed by the faculty. Students exhibiting inappropriate behaviors will be asked and expected to leave the classroom, campus laboratory, or clinical facility.

7 Course Requirements and Evaluation: At the beginning of the semester, students are expected to be able to safely and proficiently perform all essential skills from the previous nursing courses and to demonstrate knowledge acquired from previous courses in the nursing curriculum and from the nursing assistant course. Clinical Dress Code Khaki pants, neatly pressed, and a pressed long-sleeved, buttoned solid color shirt are safe for both men and women. Polo shirts, unwrinkled, are an appropriate choice if you know the environment will be quite casual, outdoors or in a very hot location. The object it not to stand out for the cutting edge look, but for your good judgment in a business environment. Leather belt and leather shoes are expected (no athletic shoes). You are not expected to be able to afford the same clothing as a CEO. However, do invest in quality that will look appropriate in all positions. Everything should be clean, well-pressed, and not show wear. Even the nicest khakis after 100 washings may not be your best choice for a reception. Carefully inspect new clothes for tags, and all clothes for loose threads, etc. (as with interview attire). Women can wear casual pants or skirts. For the most business-like appearance, pants should be creased and tailored and skirts should fit appropriately. Skirt lengths (including slit) often vary from season to season but should fall just above the knee or lower. In addition to tailored shirts, tailored knit sweaters and sweater sets are appropriate business casual choices for women. Wear a conservative watch. Shoes should be leather or micro-fiber. Regardless of style, avoid extremes. Make certain you can walk comfortably. Preferably no heals. Hose are not essential for business casual, but are recommended with shorter skirts and in more formal environments. Trouser socks or knee-high hose are appropriate with slacks. Slacks and shirts with collars for male students Denim jeans of any color or jean style pants, skorts or shorts are not permitted

8 Grading Policy: To receive a passing grade in NSG 212, the student must : 1. Complete all assignments, exams, and quizzes within the required time frame. 2. Earn 76% in the course 3. Earn Satisfactory rating in the clinical setting The scale below shows the relationship between your course percentage average and the letter grade you will receive % = A 82 89% = B 76 81% = C 67 75% = D 66% and Below = E Points in NSG 212 will come from the following be as follows: 6 Exams 450 Points 4 Pharmacology Analysis 40 Points 1 Topic Paper 20 Points 1 Final 100 Points 1 group project 10 Points 10 Homework 30 Points (3 points Each) Total 650 You must earn 494 points to pass the class with a 76% All assignments, projects and homework will be graded according to the rubric assigned. There will be no bonus points awarded in this class. Skill Proficiency Evaluations: Students are required to learn and maintain all essential skills for NSG 212 at 100% proficiency. It will be the student s responsibility to practice as needed in the campus laboratory to maintain skill proficiency. In the event the student fails a skill exam or fails to maintain proficiency of a skill in the lab/clinical area, the student must practice any deficient areas. This practice must be documented on the Essential Skill- Critical Criteria Sheet or other form selected by the faculty or instructional specialist. This sheet must be presented when the student returns to the campus lab to repeat the skill exam on the assigned date or the student will forfeit that skill attempt/opportunity. In order to receive two opportunities to complete a skill during a skill exam, the student must follow the above instructions. Absence, failure to practice, and failure to bring documentation of practice on the day of the skill exam are examples of reasons why a student will be given only one opportunity to complete a skill. All students must be finished with their final attempt at each skill exam by the deadlines set by the Laboratory Instructional Specialist/Faculty.

9 Should a student be unsuccessful on their final attempt to perform the skill or fail to meet the established deadline, they will be given the option of withdrawing from the course at that time or receiving a grade of "E" for the course. Any student who chooses not to withdraw will not be allowed to return to the campus lab or off campus clinical facility. If a student is given a lab referral to the campus lab to further develop clinical skills, the student must make arrangements with the nursing laboratory specialist regarding an appropriate day and time to come to the campus lab. The student must provide clinical faculty with required documentation that a skill has been practiced and completed successfully in the campus lab as directed in order to remain satisfactory in clinical and to continue in the course. Laboratory notebooks and their content must be kept current and cannot be removed from the campus laboratory. In the event that a student must be absent or tardy for a scheduled skill exam, the student must notify the Laboratory Instructional Specialist/Faculty prior to his/her scheduled appointment. Final Clinical Evaluation of Student Performance: The final clinical grade for each student in NSG 212 will be graded as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. An Unsatisfactory Clinical Grade occurs if the student receives three unsatisfactory clinical evaluations of performance. An overall Unsatisfactory Clinical Grade also occurs if a student is deemed by the nursing faculty to be in gross violation of safe nursing practice. The nursing faculty have the right to remove a student from clinical at any time if nursing care is deemed to be in gross violation of safe nursing practice. In the event that an overall Unsatisfactory Clinical Grade is assigned, the student will be asked to withdraw from the course. If the student chooses not to withdraw from the course when an unsatisfactory Grade has been assigned the student will not be allowed to return to campus lab or clinical and will receive an E for the course. Campus nursing laboratory experiences will be considered in the student's weekly clinical progress. Both scheduled labs and lab appointments will be considered. All students must be on time and remain in the lab the entire time during scheduled times unless excused by the Laboratory Instructional specialist/faculty. Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend and be punctual for all lectures, labs, and clinical experiences. In the event that a student must miss clinical, the student is to notify their clinical instructor prior to the beginning of the clinical experience. The student must follow up with written reason for the absence by or in person, which will be placed in the students file. Failure to notify the instructor may result in an unsatisfactory clinical evaluation for the week. One clinical absence may be excused by assigned clinical faculty. More than one clinical absence will result in the student meeting with the nursing faculty and nursing coordinator to determine continuation in the course. Exceptions to this policy can only be granted by the Nursing Coordinator.

10 If a student misses a clinical experience, and it is determined to be an excused absence, the student will be given the opportunity to make up the clinical experience at the discretion of the clinical faculty. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor within 3 days for a make-up assignment. If written work is included as make-up work, it must be completed by the given date. All assigned clinical work must be satisfactory or the clinical rating will be affected. Unexcused absences from clinical cannot be made up and the student will receive an unsatisfactory clinical performance evaluation for that week. Students who are going to be tardy for clinical must notify their clinical instructor. In the event that the student is not able to arrive by the assigned time, it is the student s responsibility to notify the clinical instructor immediately. The student may be counted absent and will be required to make up the missed time. Exam Policy: Students will not be allowed to keep or print a copy of their nursing exams. Exams may be administered at the discretion of the instructor either by electronically or on paper. Exams may not be returned for student review until all students have taken the exam. Exams may be reviewed in the classroom and may be reviewed by the individual student in the faculty s office during the week following the specific examination unless otherwise announced. Students that do not review their exams during this time period forfeit their opportunity to review the exam. If a student cannot take an exam at the scheduled time, the faculty must be notified by 4:00 p.m. of the exam day. It is the student s responsibility to make arrangements with the faculty to take the make-up exam, which may be of a different type including an oral exam. Failure to follow this procedure will result in the student receiving a 0 on the exam. Faculty will determine the date of the make-up exam. Make-up exams may not be given until the end of the semester. There will be no make-up exams for the Final exam. A student who does not take the final exam will receive a grade of 0 on the exam and the 0 will be used in computing the grade for the course. The nursing coordinator, with a concurrence of the nursing faculty, may grant exceptions to this policy. All electronic devices, with the exception of a calculator only device, must be left on the faculty desk during all examinations. Exams are announced. Make up exams will be given at the earliest date available. The facility will determine if an exam can be made up. Faculty will determine if missed exam policy was followed. Documentation may be required. Students should refer to this Syllabus and the Nursing Program Handbook for testing policies. Quizzes can be announced or unannounced and missed quizzes cannot be made up. Late Assignment Policy: Work submitted past the deadline as directed by faculty will not be graded and the student will receive a 0. Clinical written work that is late will not be accepted, the student will be unsatisfactory in that area of clinical evaluation. Clinical faculty will announce when clinical written work is due.

11 Withdrawal Policy: A student may withdraw from this course until the last day to withdraw indicated on the Academic Calendar for Spring The student must see a nursing faculty or the nursing coordinator prior to withdrawal in order to complete the appropriate documentation and receive the appropriate readmission guidelines. All facility badges and any books or materials loaned by the faculty or the campus lab to the student must be returned during this meeting in order for the student to be allowed to withdraw with a W grade.
