Instructional Methods: A variety of instructional methods will be used to include, but not to be limited to: lecture, active dialogue, cooperative learning techniques, quizzes, student writing, and peer evaluation. General Course Policies: 1. Students will show professionalism and courtesy at all times as outlined in the AmeriTech Code of Conduct, the Nursing Student Handbook, and the AmeriTech College Catalog. Students are especially required to show courtesy to all AmeriTech faculty and staff and to comply with their direction while attending class, lab, Simulated Clinical Experience (SCE), and/or clinical. Students at clinical sites are to follow the direction of the clinical site staff. Lack of courtesy is grounds for probation and/or dismissal from the Nursing program. 2. Students are expected to arrive prepared for learning, and to remain actively engaged in the dynamics of the classroom, lab, or clinical at all times. 4 3. Students are required to follow the dress code as outlined in the Nursing Student Handbook. Students arriving to class, clinical, lab, or SCE in violation of the dress code may be asked to go home and change, and the time it takes to come into compliance with dress code will be deducted from their attendance time 4. Students may not use electronic devices in class, lab, Simulated Clinical Environment (SCE), or clinical except when on designated breaks. These devices include but are not limited to: cellphones, cameras, MP3 and other music players, personal digital assistants, and laptop computers. The only exception to this rule is the use of laptop computers in the classroom when permitted by the instructor. All AmeriTech instructors have the right to request that students turn off and put away any electronic device, including their laptop computer, while in class, lab, SCE, or clinical. Students who refuse to comply with this request will be asked to leave the classroom, lab, SCE, or clinical setting. No photography in class, lab, or the simulator is permitted without the consent of the instructor as well as the people being photographed. Students may not take photographs in the clinical setting. 5. Students are expected to attend the section of the class, lab, SCE, and/or clinical for which they are registered. Students may not attend another section to make up an absence without the advance permission of the instructor(s) involved. Instructors are not required to allow students to attend a different section from the one in which they are registered. 6. Because of the accelerated nature of this program, any absence from class, lab, SCE, and/or clinical will be detrimental to the student s education. Students are expected to attend all sessions of the classes for which they are registered. If a student is absent more than once in a semester from any one theory class, lab, SCE, and/or clinical they will be withdrawn from the program. Instructors may NOT excuse an absence. Students with extraordinary circumstances surrounding an absence (such as hospitalization, death in the family, court summons) should notify Student Services as soon as possible. 7. Single clinical absences (entire day or partial day) MUST be made up by the end of the semester. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor and arrange for clinical make-up time. Other absences do not need to be made up; however, it is the student s responsibility to follow up with the faculty member and/or fellow students regarding work and information missed during an absence. Students should note that points may be lost (for such items as quizzes and participation) for a class, lab, or SCE session that is missed, and it is possible that these lost points could adversely affect their grade. 8. Students should observe standards of punctuality at all times. This means that they must be in the class, lab, SCE, or clinical prior to the start of the session and be ready to participate at the beginning of the session. Students who arrive tardy will be noted and three tardy Revised 01/2014 Page 4 Copyright Ameritech College All rights reserved. 5 marks will be equivalent to one absence. Students arriving after the start of nursing shift report in the clinical area will not be permitted to attend clinical that day. 9. All students are required to follow acceptable standards of academic integrity. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Evidence of cheating in any form may result in immediate dismissal from AmeriTech College. Students utilizing any electronic device during a quiz or test (unless given specific permission by the instructor) will be assumed to be utilizing that device for cheating and will be dealt with in a manner appropriate to that assumption. 10. The misuse of computing, networking, or information resources may result in the restriction of computing privileges. Examples of misuse include, but are not limited to: unauthorized use of another person s computer account; viewing inappropriate content on the Internet; attempting to monitor or tamper with another person s electronic communications; and/or reading, copying, changing, or deleting another user s files. I-Clickers: Students will be required to bring to each class period an I-Clicker that has been distributed with their other required textbooks. The I-Clicker is a classroom response system that allows students to respond to questions, polls, and quizzes. It may also be used to record classroom attendance. Instructors will be able to keep a record of each student s individual responses, so it is important that each student retain and use their own I-Clicker remote. Students are held responsible for bringing their personal I-Clicker remote to each class period and retaining it for use in future semesters. Only one I-Clicker remote is distributed as part of the book package for the entirety of the nursing program. If the student loses their I- Clicker remote, they must immediately purchase a replacement. Grading Criteria: Each student is responsible for maintaining a cumulative minimum average academic grade of 74% or above for the semester. All classes require the student to achieve a 74% in order to pass the course. Failure to achieve satisfactory minimum grade levels will result in probation. Should a student need to repeat a course, that student is responsible for the associated costs; however, Federal Financial Aid may be available. Students should review the AmeriTech catalog regarding probation. Further information regarding academic probation is available through the office of the Nursing Director and information regarding costs is available through the Financial Aid office. Students may only repeat one course during the nursing program. If they fail two courses (including general education, core courses or other nursing course requirements), or fail the same course more than once, they will be dismissed from the program. They will receive a score of 0 on the comprehensive final examination, which will result in a failing course grade. The student will retake the NUR 290 course when and if they return to school to retake the other failed course. Students who fail NUR 290 because they did not pass other coursework and could not take the comprehensive final examination will not have the NUR 290 failure count towards the two-failure policy. Students who do not pass NUR 290 after administration of the comprehensive final examination MUST participate in an on-site, three day review session that is held after finals week (April 14-18). The on-site ATI Review will be held on April 28-30, 0800 to Students who pass the final examination may participate in the review if they wish, (we highly encourage everyone to attend this review.) A second attempt at the comprehensive final examination will be permitted after the review session. 14 Practice for Proficiency: Journaling (Students will receive 5 points possible for each question) For each question you choose to journal, (5 weekly), briefly document your approach to each question as you learned in Nurse Locic 2.0 Testing and Remediation; 1. What is the question asking me? 2. Is the question positive worded, negative worded, or priority? 3. What do I need to know to answer this question? (Content) This is a learning activity, if you do not know what you need to know to answer this question, look it up. **Did you use a resource to answer this question? 4. Provide rationale for each choice eliminated or selected. Tell me why it is right or wrong. 5. Post reflection: self evaluate your critical reading of the stem, self evaluate your rationale for eliminating and selecting choices, and ask yourself What did I know? and What did I learn? Example: Question: A nurse is educating a client who is taking iron supplements about foods which aid in iron absorption. Which of the following food choices indicates an understanding of the teaching? 1. The question is asking what foods aid iron absorption. 2. This is a positively worded question. 3. I need to know that vitamin C aids in the absorption of iron, I also need to know what foods/beverages contain vitamin C. 4. A baked potato, green beans, and milk do not aid in the absorption of iron and are not good sources of vitamin C. Revised 01/2014 Page 14 Copyright Ameritech College All rights reserved.
