1 Syllabus for VNSG1502L Applied Nursing Skills I Placement: First Semester Course Description: Introduction to and application of primary nursing skills. Emphasis on utilization of the nursing process and related scientific principles, and appropriate medical terminology. Corequisite: VNSG Contact Hours/Credit Value: 144 Hours, 5 Credits Pre-requisites: None Instructor: Brooke Black, BSN, RN, CPN Office: Kilgore College Longview, Office #LH200 Office Telephone: address: bblack@kilgore.edu Course Rationale: To function successfully in the health profession, a nurse must perform the basic nursing skills of the profession utilizing asepsis or sterility according to appropriately established procedures. Introductory Medical Surgical Nursing. 11th Edition, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Castillo, Sandra. STAT. 5th edition, Saunders, Elsevier. Evaluation: Exams..70% Stats Workbook...1 major exam grade Homework & Quizzes.1 major exam grade Lab Check Off 10% Final Exam..20% (Final course average must be 75% or higher) Classroom Policies: 1. Attendance Regular attendance is required. Lack of regular attendance may result in student being dropped from the course (see vocational nursing Student Handbook or Kilgore College Student Handbook). 2. Academic Honesty Policy Cheating or any form of scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated. The instructor will determine if scholastic dishonesty has occurred. If the student does not accept the decision of the instructor, the student may have the case reviewed by the

2 appropriate program director/department chair, dean, and Vice President of Instruction. See Student Grievance Procedure above for specific appeal instructions. 3. Drop dates the student is responsible for withdrawing themselves from a class before 75% of class is completed. Failure to do so before the drop date will result in an F in the class. If student drops in the first 12 weeks the result is a W (withdrawn), 13 th and 16 th week results in an F. Students who have financial aid are cautioned that dropping a class may interfere with future financial aid. 4. Make-up Exam Procedure a student may make up a maximum of one exam per course, and only for a missed exam. The instructor will schedule a make-up test date and time (usually at the end of the semester or following the final exam). The maximum grade a student may achieve on a make-up exam is Exam Grades or Questions students who question the accuracy of a grade or a test question must contact their instructor within 3 (three) working days of receiving their grade (or review of exam by instructor) to resolve the problem. If after discussing their questions or concerns with the instructor, they do not accept the decision of that instructor, they may have their case reviewed by the program director. Students will have 3 (three) working days to follow the Student Grievance procedure. Students will not be allowed to go back and review tests or scantrons for accuracy after the grievance time frame. 6. Students are not allowed to enter classes late or leave without permission of instructor due to disruption to class. 7. Students sleeping in class will be asked to leave and time will be deducted as absence. 8. Students are not allowed to eat during class. Only drinks with lids on the containers, are allowed. 9. No cell phones, books or notes allowed during testing. Non-compliant students will receive a 0 on their exam or may be dropped for cheating (see #2). Disclaimer: The instructor reserves the right to make modifications in content and schedule exam dates as necessary to promote the best education possible. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain changes made during their absence from class. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: Describe the underlying principles of selected nursing skills and their relationship to client heath status (1,2,5,7)*^ Demonstrate satisfactory performance of selected nursing skills utilizing principles of safety (1,2,4,5,7)*^ Identify the nursing process used to solve basic client care problems across the life span utilizing appropriate medical terminology (1,2,5,7)*^ Demonstrate how to chart client care utilizing the nursing process, approved abbreviations, medical terminology (1,2,5,7)*^ Demonstrate basic assessment techniques and be able to record it using proper terminology (1,2,5,7)*^ 6. Identify measures that are used to contain health care costs (1,5,7)* ^Meet DELC Competencies

These procedures will be taught in Fundamentals and Medication Administration classes. 1. Hand washing Check off 2. Isolation technique 3. Bed making, open, occupied, surgical Hand Washing 4. Lifting, transfers, and body mechanics Vital Signs 5. Bed baths, oral care, hair care, and nail care Sterile Gloves 6. Vital signs Foley Catheters 7. Assessments Enema 8. Donning sterile gloves Naso-Gastric tubes 9. Catheterization Glucometers 10. Calculating intake and output Medications 11. Enema s Dressings 12. Sterile/no-touch dressing changes 13. Naso-gastric tubes 14. Glucometers 15. Meds-p.o., IM, subq 16. Ace bandage wraps Following the Instructor s demonstration of the above procedures, the student will be given practice time in the lab prior to performing the skill for the instructor. Audiovisual aids and equipment will be available for student use. Student will sign up for a time slot to perform the skill and will have the opportunity to successfully demonstrate the skill. If the student fails to complete the skill successfully the student will have a second opportunity to complete the skill with a different Instructor. The highest grade possible on the second attempt is 75. If the student fails to complete the skill after two attempts, he or she will be given an unsatisfactory for clinical failure. Skills Laboratory Check-offs INSTRUCTIONS: You must bring the check-of sheet to skills lab to practice and for check off. Anything that is marked Critical point is a significant part of the skill you must learn and perform during check off in order to pass the skills check-off successfully. You may receive a lower grade if you do not bring these forms to the practice of this check-off, and the actual check-off. This will be reflected in your evaluation at the end of the course. (Check-offs count 5% of the course grade).
