2 Details of Presenters and their Topics Cathy Hammond (Evidence Based Practice EBP in Wound Care) Catherine is the Clinical Nurse leader for the Community Specialist Wound Management Service at Nurse Maude in Christchurch. Her role encompasses clinical practice, education and research providing a strong link between theory and practice in the real world. Some of Cathy s presentation will include: What does it mean EBP in wound care? How do we ensure that we are using EBP? What are the resources that we can use to support best practice in wound care? Look at the hierarchy of evidence and how we can access the documents we need to base our practice on. Take the leg ulcer guidelines for example and look at best practice statements versus consensus documents and guidelines. Dr Max Bloomfield (Biofilms- Wound Infection/Cellulitis) Maxim is a Registrar in Infectious Diseases at Wellington Hospital. Max has presented to our group before in an evening session on this topic which was a resounding success. We have invited him back to share his expertise to a larger group. Some of Maxim s presentation will include Biofilms discuss the formation, maturation and dispersal (planktonic bacteria versus biofilm) - biofilm cycle and medical staff s contribution in management Wound infection correct wound swabbing technique; laboratory testing from the collection and plating of wound swab to interpretation of results; factors that contribute on the wound form to assist in laboratory interpretation - diagnosis of patients with infection in wounds including investigation and management of wound infection - factors contributing to a differential diagnosis of osteomyelitis for nurses in clinical practice and confirmation - appropriate use of antibiotics and case studies Cellulitis contributing factors to recurring cellulitis and management/prevention Antimicrobial stewardship global challenge; what does it mean for the future; our responsibilities as health care professionals

3 Jenny Phillips (Debridement - Antimicrobials and Wound Cleansers) Stop anointing and start cleansing Jenny has been a Nurse Practitioner in NZ for many years having come from the UK with wound care expertise. She educates on the BN programme at Massey University; provides a post graduate course on wound management; community problem solving complex wounds; practice and management and until recently worked in primary health care where much of her work was ACC assessment of complex wounds. Some of Jenny s content will include Debridement of wounds; why it is necessary? - health economics related to debridement; methods of debridement; means by which the nurse can plan conservative debridement of a wound when recognising biofilm, slough and precautions for this process e.g. (use of a debridement cloth) Which antimicrobial for which wound? ; antimicrobial dressings and their appropriate use on wounds (which wound and which antimicrobial e.g. impregnated tulles versus impregnated hydrofibers/gelling agents); wound cleansers and their appropriate use on wounds. Dr Lea Whittington (Patients with Diabetes and Foot Ulceration) Lea is a Diabetes Specialist Podiatrist in the High-Risk Foot Service at Mid Central DHB. Lea is originally from the UK NHS and has experience in health management; leadership; academic research and has authored a number of papers. Some of Lea s content will include: Where are we at globally in terms of stats in prevention of amputation and management for best practice of DFU? What is the recognised classification in NZ for DFU? Discuss the aetiologies of neuropathy; ischaemia and neuroischaemia i.e. assessment, treatment, management What we can do in practice to prevent MDT components and action for care Cathy Hammond (Conservative management of patients with lower leg oedema +/- ulceration) Some of Cathy s content will include: How to prevent skin tears becoming leg ulcers.

4 When to refer on? Venous leg ulcers and conservative management. Management of oedema; venous hypertension through various types of compression garments. Update on these subjects e.g. new compression devices to reduce cost and improve quality of life; options other than a compression bandage. Dr Lupe Tamapoeau (Presentation/management of patients with typical/atypical lower limb ulceration) Lupe is a Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon who works at Wellington Hospital and other private hospitals and clinics. She is the first and only New Zealand female Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon and the only Polynesian Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in the whole of Australasia. Some of Lupe s content will include: Compare venous and arterial ulcers in terms of pathophysiology and presentation. Present other causes of ulceration e.g. vasculitis and their presentation. Surgical intervention and treatment for venous ulcers; arterial ulcers; diabetic foot ulcers Dr Lissa Judd (Skin lesions and topical applications for skin and wounds) Lissa worked as a dermatologist for many years for both Hutt and Wellington DHBs but is in full time private practice currently. She also lectures in dermatology for the University of Otago Some of Lissa s content will include: Differentiating between some of the more common skin lesions i.e. BCC; SCC; melanoma. History and presentation that may indicate malignancy. Causes and management of common skin issues e.g. dry, scaly skin; erosive pustular dermatosis; keratosis; other Vehicles of topical application i.e. lotions, creams and ointments and when to use these Emollients and creams What, when and how? Types e.g. occlusive and humectants - (e.g. sorbolene; aqueous cream; nutraplus; duoleum; zinc and castor oil; QV lotion; fatty and emulsifying applications; aveeno and others you may have questions about). The use of topical steroids and their classes and for how long local side effects Correct use and application of potassium permanganate; effudix and fucicort Presentation and management of tinea

5 Details for the Wound Study Day May 26 th 2018 Venue: Wellington SPCA 140 Alexandra Road Newtown Wellington This is an exciting venue (google and see). The Wellington SPCA re-sited to this venue a few years ago. It was the old Fever Hospital for Infectious Diseases that was originally opened in 1918 and built specifically on top of Mount Victoria to isolate it from the rest of Wellington. Hard copies of the power point presentations will not be provided; however, these will be available online on the NZWCS site, with the presenters permission, and if you are a member. In order to protect our presenters and the patients they are presenting (with their permission) there will be no allowance for photos of slides to be taken during their presentations. Parking There is limited parking at this venue and we need to be mindful of those needing to access the SPCA with their animals. There is parking on the road near the venue.
