2 1 Course Title Sterile Supply Techniques Course Course Code L554 3 Level 5 4 Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This course is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in the Sterile Supply Techniques Course at Level 5. The course is designed to give a description of the broad general purpose of standards required for specific staff members working the Sterile Supply Techniques Services. The specific target audience is non-nursing staff working, within the context of their job description, to ensure optimum decontamination/sterilisation standards in the Sterile Supply Department. The learning on the course is facilitated by both theoretical and practical input. 6 Preferred Entry Level Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. 7 Special Requirements Learners must fulfil the occupational health / infection control requirements prior to the commencement of the course. (Please see Application Form) Learners must achieve the required safety standards prior to course completion. 8 General Aims Learners who achieve this award: 8.1 gain knowledge and understanding of the work practices in the Sterile Supply Department of the hospital and appreciate the importance of working effectively as a team member 8. develop an awareness and understanding of infection control policies and procedures and the related microbiological aspects aimed at improving infection control outcomes for patients and staff

3 8.3 develop good work practices in relation to quality and quality standards and procedures 8.4 demonstrate an understanding of occupational health and safety issues in relation to the working environment 8.5 demonstrate a knowledge of the correct procedures in relation to decontamination/sterilisation i.e. cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation of surgical and medical instruments/scopes and equipment in the Hospital s Sterile Supplies Department 8.6 be able to carry out the correct procedures in relation to the care and maintenance of instruments/scopes and equipment e.g. handling, inspecting, preparing, assembling, packaging, sealing, labelling, function testing, distributing, and storing. 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into [ 5 ] units. 4 Unit Basic Clinical Microbiology and Infection Control Policies and Procedures Learners should be able to: identify the common microorganisms and the risks they impose to human health 10.. outline the common methods by which cross infection occurs and effective means of breaking the chain of infection identify the body s normal defences against infection and evaluate how operative procedures pose a risk for infection appreciate the consequences of nosocomial infections explain the universal precautions necessary to prevent potential infections in accordance with the Bon Secours Hospital Infection Control Policies and Procedural Guidelines demonstrate the necessary precautions taken in clinical practice to prevent the spread of infection in the Hospital Sterile Supply Department understand and appreciate the importance of water treatment systems Unit 3 Occupational Health and Safety issues in relation to working in the Hospital Sterile Supplies Department Learners should be able to: define the term quality and identify the relevant quality standards, policies and procedural guidelines explain the rationale for validating and monitoring instruments/scopes and equipment demonstrate good practice in relation to record keeping for traceability describe the duties of employers and employees as specified in current Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Legislation appreciate the importance of the correct use of personal and protective equipment against biological agents demonstrate safe and healthy work practices in the work environment including safe handling and storage of instruments/scopes and equipment display an appreciation of the need to take all the necessary precautions to eliminate the potential hazards associated with the handling of the instruments/scopes and equipment in Hospital Sterile Supply Department 4

5 demonstrate a knowledge of the correct procedure for reporting incidents outline the principles of safe practice in relation to: electrical equipment management of hazardous chemicals sterilants and disinfectants used waste disposal handling of sharps, instruments/scopes and equipment reprocessing of instruments checking of instruments prior to repackaging actions to be taken in the case of damaged or missing instruments describe the guidelines for the management of blood and body fluid spillage Unit 4 Decontamination Standards: Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilisation principles and practices Learners should be able to: appreciate the importance of adhering to the appropriate dress code and standards of personal hygiene including hand washing identify the various cleaning agents/detergents and disinfectants used in the Hospital Sterile Supply Department including the rationale, preparation, utilisation and disposal define the terms decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, sterilisation and describe the indications for each method demonstrate pre-treatment hand-wash, aseptic technique including the methods of creating and maintaining a sterile field demonstrate the correct procedure and relevant timing for the use and maintenance of cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising of equipment (washer, disinfector, steriliser) including receipt and transfer of instruments 5

6 Unit 5 Care and Maintenance of Instruments/Scopes and Equipment. Team effectiveness in the Workplace. Learners should be able to: demonstrate a basic knowledge of surgical / medical instruments/scopes and equipment including assembly and inspection of instrument set wrapping and packaging and loading and unloading of autoclaves demonstrate the knowledge required in the care & maintenance of instruments/scopes & equipment including the following: handling inspecting preparing assembling packaging sealing labeling documenting function testing distributing storing recording & dealing with faulty equipment re local policy & procedural guidelines carry out the correct procedure in relation to the following: instrument set assembling handling inspecting preparing assembling packaging sealing labeling function testing distributing/transporting storing dealing with faulty equipment (e.g. sending items for repair) demonstrate the correct procedures in: monitoring documenting and recording specific aspects in relation to decontamination assist in the maintenance of sterile stock including storage, rotation, checking and transportation of sterile goods outline the interpersonal relationships relevant to team working in the workplace Explain the role of the individual in team working and identify situations contributing to effective team working. 6

7 11 Portfolio of Assessment Summary Project 40% Skills Demonstration 40% Examination 0% Project The internal assessor will devise a brief that requires the candidate to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the relevant Hospital Sterilisation Supply Department s operational standards, procedures and policies relating to instruments/scopes and equipment, including validation; monitoring; and record-keeping Candidates will present a detailed description of Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Legislation including safe and healthy work practices e.g. personal and protective clothing, safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, sterilants and disinfectants, instruments/scopes and equipment Candidates will be required to evaluate the role of individuals in effective team working and the essential interpersonal skills A detailed description of the precautions to eliminate potential hazards associated with the handling of sharps, instruments/scopes, and equipment and correct procedure for waste disposal, reprocessing and checking of instruments, with reference to damaged and missing instruments. In addition, reference will be made to the management of blood and body fluid spillage and mechanism for reporting critical incidents The project focuses on a broad range of specific learning outcomes in relation to Units (1) and (3). The project may be undertaken as a group or collaborative piece of work. The individual contribution of each candidate must be clearly identified The project may be presented using a variety of media including written, oral, graphic, audio, visual or any combination of these. Any audio or video evidence must be provided on tape and candidates must be clearly identified by name to assist the assessment process Candidates are required to apply a selection of relevant research to the project and include references/bibliography as appropriate 7

Examination The internal assessor will devise a theory-based written examination that is based on a range of specific learning outcomes in relation to Unit () The examination will be [1.5 hours] in duration The format of the examination is as follows: Section (a) answer five short questions out of eight and Section (b) answer two structured questions out of five This examination enables candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical components of Unit () 11.3 Skills Demonstration In one or more skills demonstrations, candidates are assessed in a broad range of practical skills and knowledge during the course of the module i.e. over a period of four weeks and in test conditions at a specified time as outlined in the specific learning outcomes specified in Units (4) and (5) The skills may be assessed by the internal assessor/another qualified person, in the centre, for whom the candidate undertakes the relevant tasks The skills tested are chosen at random by the internal assessor/another qualified person on the day of assessment during the real-life work experience Candidates will be assessed in their ability to organize the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization areas for the decontamination of instruments/scopes and equipment, including the preparation, utilization and disposal of various cleaning agents/detergents and disinfectants Candidates will demonstrate pre-treatment hand-wash, aseptic technique including the methods of creating and maintaining a sterile field and carry out the correct procedure and relevant timing of cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising of equipment, including receipt and transfer of instruments Candidates will safely and effectively participate in set wrapping e.g. handling, assembling, inspecting, packaging, sealing, labelling, function testing, distributing, storing, loading 8

9 and unloading of autoclaves and dealing with faulty instruments including sending items for repair Candidates will carry out the correct procedure in monitoring, documenting and recording specific aspects in relation to decontamination Candidates will clearly identify the correct procedure in the maintenance of stock including storage, rotation, checking, and transportation of sterile goods 1 Grading Pass 50-64% Merit 65-79% Distinction % 9
