3 HOME STUDY INSTRUCTIONS Thank you for purchasing this home study. To receive CE/CME credit for completing it, please do the following: Mail in your Green Proof of Purchase Card Listen to the lecture on the CD Complete the participation documentation form, post-tet answer sheet and evaluation. Please sign the Certification Statement (at bottom of the participation documentation form). Mail or fax the participation documentation form with the signed participation verification form, post test, answer sheet, and evaluation to IAHB. Please retain a copy for your records. If you pass, IAHB will send you the CE/CME certificate within 4 weeks of receiving the CE/CME materials. If you do not pass, another test will be mailed to you. 4 COURSE DESCRIPTION Dr. Edgette discusses how to work with teenagers who may show little interest in sitting in a room and discussing their problems with an unfamiliar adult. She teaches how to hold the adolescent client accountable for his/her actions without fracturing the therapist/client relationship. The workshop also covers working collaboratively with parents, teachers and other third parties who may have unrealistic expectations about how therapy can work. This program is suggested for psychologists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses, advanced graduate students and other healthcare professionals with an intermediate knowledge in this field. It is not suitable for the general public. STATEMENT OF NEED Working with difficult adolescents is a delicate balance between support and confrontation, forthrightness and patience, and humor and resolve. All of these aspects are necessary to make a real impact upon what has historically been seen as a challenging client population. Needs assessment data collected from a variety of sources indicate training in practical, effective methods for dealing with difficult adolescents would be of ongoing value to professional therapists. Janet Edgette s live workshop, Stop Walking on Eggshells, was developed to address these needs. This home study will allow professionals for whom attending a live workshop is difficult or inconvenient to receive the same training benefit and increase their clinical skills. GOALS & OBJECTIVES Overall goal: Participants will work more effectively working with difficult adolescents and their families. The course will: Describe common first session mistakes that cause adolescent clients to lose confidence in their therapist s ability to help. Hold the adolescent client accountable for his/her actions without fracturing the therapist/client relationship. Conduct effective therapy within shorter time frames and fewer sessions. Respond constructively to three ways in which adolescents commonly try to shut down the counselor and the therapy. Draw on four creative techniques for dealing with the uncommunicative adolescent. 7 FACULTY Janet Edgette, Psy.D. is a psychologist, author, workshop leader and speaker from the Philadelphia area. She is nationally recognized for her fresh, contemporary and effective therapeutic approach to reaching children and teenagers who are turned off by the idea of getting counseling or just plain tired of hearing adults tell them what they should be doing differently. Dr. Edgette received her Masters of Public Health, specializing in Health Education, at the University of Oklahoma and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA. She is the author of five books on psychotherapy and sports psychology, including Candor, Connection, and Enterprise in Adolescent Therapy (Norton) and Stop Negotiating with Your Teen: Strategies for Parenting Your Angry, Unhappy, Moody or Manipulative Adolescent.
