3 INVITED SPEAKERS INTERNATIONAL FACULTY Dr Simon Archibald Dr Archibald s attendance is supported by Integra Dr Archibald, PhD, is the Chief Scientific Officer for Integra LifeSciences Corporation. He joined Integra in 1997 to oversee the clinical and commercial development of the NeuraGen nerve guide system and to explore the development of a neurosurgical product line from the existing Integra collagen business and patent portfolio. In 1997 he initiated the program that resulted in the development of the DuraGen dural graft matrix for which he is a co-inventor. Currently Dr Archibald serves as an Affiliate Research Professor, School of Biomedical Engineering, Drexel University, Philadelphia. Previously to joining Integra, Dr Archibald was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Centre, to which he was appointed after completing a research Fellowship in the Department of Neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Centre and in the Department of Neuropathology and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School. He graduated with a degree in Zoology from the University of Reading in the UK, and has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of North Staffordshire in the UK. His primary research focus is in peripheral and central nervous system regeneration with a particular emphasis on the extracellular matrix and translating discoveries in the basic sciences to clinical practice. Dr Odile Damour Dr Damour s attendance is partly supported by Molnlycke Dr Odile Damour has done research in the field of burns treatment and skin reconstruction since More recently she has done work in cornea and oral mucosa engineering as well. In 1987 she founded the Skin Substitutes Laboratory linked to the Burns Centre Edouard Herriot Hospital and the University of Lyon. The Skin Substitutes Laboratory, in conjunction with the Burn Centre, is one of the leading institutes for treatment of burn injuries worldwide. It is also affiliated to the Institute of Protein Biology and Chemistry of the French National Research Centre (CNRS). Since 1988, the laboratory has been producing a cultivated epidermis used for extensive burn injuries (>70% TBSA). She also developed a dermal substrate that is a good support for epidermal component to give rise for a skin equivalent. Dr Damour s group was able to detect all the components of extra-cellular matrix in the skin equivalent. Her invention is unique in that not only are all components of the matrix incorporated into the skin tissue but the skin cells and the components produced by them organise themselves in such a way that the conditions for a normal and healthy skin are restored. It is a model in which the components of elastic tissue as elastin and fibrillin are not only synthetised but also deposited as functional elastic fibres. Dr Damour has 117 international publications with impact factor and 6 validated patents, as well as she was supervisor for 25 PhD thesis. Professor Fabienne Braye Professor Braye s attendance is supported by Integra Professor Fabienne Braye coordinates the training for Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in Lyon 1 University. Lyon is the second biggest town in France. Professor Braye is the organiser of a diploma about burns and of another diploma about wound healing. He is an active member of the French Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a member of the International Society of Burn Injuries (since 1993) and a European Burn Association member. Her hospital activity is shared between the Plastic and Aesthetic Unit, which she heads, and a 20-bed Burn Unit. The Burn team treats more than 400 inbed patients a year, of all ages and severity. A close collaboration with the Skin Substitutes Laboratory allows the frequent use of cultured epidermis. The Plastic Surgery unit is specialised in the fields of burn sequelae and microsurgery. Professor Braye completed a PhD in the field of skin substitutes. Her other fields of interest are paediatric burns and the treatment of scars. Dr Dantzer is a Doctor Colonel, and is in charge and Head of the Burn Service of the Military Instruction Hospital Sainte Anne in Toulon, France. Dr Dantzer was made a Fellow in the burn service in He was immediately impassioned by the burn surgery and the treatment of burn patients. Since this period, he has dedicated his career in the burn field and plastic surgery. Especially interested by dermal substitutes, he has conducted laboratory studies in the last years of 1980 and he has performed clinical applications of different dermal matrix since His other surgery fields of interest are trauma surgery, postburn reconstructive surgery and post-infection skin damage. 1
