Distinguish the clinical presentation and the growing issue of obesity for children and adults in the United States; 2. Identify the correlation between obesity and other medical problems, including respiratory and nutritional problems and illness, and alcohol and other substance use disorders, and various types of mental disorders; 3. Outline effective prevention and treatment strategies; and 4. Describe the importance of a collaborative multidisciplinary approach aimed at childhood and adult obesity prevention and patient care, across the continuum of care. Obesity Through a Multi-faceted Lens : Michelle A. Yeboah, DrPH 1. Identify the framework needed to understand the multi-faceted epidemic of obesity; 2. Identify several contributing interrelated factors that contribute to the rise in the prevalence of obesity; 3. Identify biological, environmental and cultural factors associated with increasing rates of obesity, including substance/alcohol use and mental illnesses; and 4. Identify comprehensive interprofessional strategies aimed at effective prevention of obesity and obesity-related illnesses, including the important role of clinical laboratory technologists and other behind-the-scenes public health and healthcare professionals. Socioeconomic Factors of Obesity : Lauren Barnak, MS, RD 1. Describe some proposed relationships between socioeconomics and obesity in the U.S.; 2. List three proposed mechanisms of action in which lower socioeconomics is thought to affect obesity; 3. Describe the significance of the DRD4 gene, and how it is thought to affect obesity; 4. Identify the impact of socioeconomic status, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and dietary behavior as determinants of obesity; 5. Identify which age-group, community-based nutrition intervention is thought to be most effective in influencing those of low socio-economic status; 6. Describe how early childhood ties directly to the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) 4000 Wellness and Public Health learning objectives specifically learning area 4010: community intervention, monitoring and evaluation; and 7. Describe how socio-economic aspects of an individual s or family s quality of life, including health, education, occupation and income, can be positively impacted via a collaborative, team-based healthcare approach. Panel Discussion: Interprofessional and Other Collaborative Perspectives on Obesity : Nana Yaw Adu-Sarkodie, MD, MPH, Michelle A. Yeboah, DrPH and Lauren Barnak, MS, RD 1. Describe in detail how various biological, psychological/behavioral, cultural, environmental and socio-economic factors, including alcohol and substance use and mental health, impact individual obesity risk and protective factors across the lifespan; 2. Outline how formal and informal collaborative partnerships of public health, healthcare, school health practitioners and community-based organizations can aid in decreasing rates of incidence and prevalence rates of obesity and obesity-related illnesses; 3. Identify current interprofessional/collaborative obesity prevention and care initiatives that are effective and/or models for future implementation. LUNCH BREAK Fighting Obesity by Altering Hormones of the Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) : Alyson Myers, MD 1. Outline the role that Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) hormones play in appetite and obesity; 2. State some of the effective changes in GIT hormones through the use of various medications and bariatric surgery; 3. Describe the important roles of clinical laboratory technologists and imaging technologists and other qualified health professionals in assessing and evaluating various obesity and GIT states and conditions; and 4. Describe the collaborative role of healthcare practitioners in determining need and appropriateness for bariatric surgery, and the collaborative function of the bariatric surgical perioperative team. Obesity and Diabetes: Role of Bariatric Surgery : Gustavo Fernandez Ranvier, MD, PhD 1. Identify obesity and diabetes as a global health problem; 2. Describe the social, economic and clinical consequences of obesity and diabetes; 3. Outline the current knowledge and association between diabetes and obesity; 4. Describe the current indications for bariatric surgery in obese and diabetic patients; and 5. Outline benefits and risks associated with obesity drugs of the past, present and future; 2. Describe (compare and contrast) off-label medication use for obesity treatment by clinical practitioners; 3. Describe the critical partnership, challenges and evidence-based best practices between the healthcare pharmaceutical industry and healthcare providers in combating obesity; and 4. Outline effective or promising strategies for strengthening collaborative partnerships between the healthcare pharmaceutical industry and health care providers and community-based organizations/providers in providing both obesity preventive and interventive care. 3:50 pm Effective CBT, ACT and Mindfulness Strategies: Sustaining Permanent Weight Loss and Weight Management : Michelle P. Outline the similarities and/or relationship between eating and substance use disorders, and effective coping strategies to work through these maladaptive behaviors; 3. Describe techniques to foster healthier emotional eating and prevent other associated substance use disorders to enhance awareness and effectiveness toward healthful goals; 4. Identify specific strategies for asserting their healthful behavior when interacting with others; 5. Define skills to maintain permanent food and fitness accomplishments; and 6.
