Demonstrate how our immune defenses can be overcome by infectious agents and what can be done to help. List cutting-edge concepts and technologies to explore and manipulate the immune system. 10:30am Travel Medicine in the Era of Emerging Pathogens Daniel Caplivski, M.D. Identify appropriate testing for patients who travel to Zika-affected areas. Describe symptoms consistent with Zika, Chikgungunya and Dengue. Assess travelers who return with fever and rash. Identify species of malaria that require special antimalarial treatment to prevent relapses. 11:30am 12:30pm Occupational Exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV) and Recommendations for Post Exposure Prophylaxis Tessa Gomez, M.D. Outline the evidence-based updated CDC/USPHS guidelines for the management of occupation exposures to Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and post-exposure prophylaxis. Explain the risks of transmission during the occupational exposure for HBV, HCV and HIV in the health care setting. Outline the care management of a Health Care Personnel (HCP) individual who is potentially exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Human Immunodeficiency virus. List recommendations of new selected drugs that are indicated for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV and their toxicities. LUNCH BREAK 1:30pm How to Become a Lyme-literate Clinician Yoram A. List successes and trials from HIV care delivery in the US and globally, with a particular focus on integrated models designed by large public health systems. Outline the innovations created by new ambulatory care-delivery models and compare and contrast these features with features from integrated HIV care delivery models. Describe a framework for utilizing HIV best practices to create a new ambulatory-care model that will feature integrated, end-to-end care delivery. Update on Clostridium Difficile Diarrhea: Worsening Threat in Hospitals, New Solutions Paul Riska, M.D. Describe recent changes in the epidemiology of C. difficile infection. Outline the evidence behind potential explanations for the spread of C. difficile. Identify different diagnostic methods for C difficile and how they affect the case-counts and the predicted clinical course and severity of disease.
