5 4 SESSION Descriptions 1. Rescue Plan for Fall Protection (French) When employees work at heights, they must use fall protection. Reg clearly outlines this and the components for a fall rescue plan. This session will examine the procedure and its training requirements for rescuing an employee in an emergency. You ll learn how to properly wear a harness, how long a person can safely hang in a harness, the right equipment to use in a rescue, and other equipment to use after a fall has occurred (trauma straps, etc.) Bruno Gagné, President, Workplace Safety School of NB Inc. 2. Unique Needs of Young/New Workers Each year in New Brunswick, more than1,000 young workers are injured on the job. Young workers and new workers can have unique needs depending on factors such as age, personal development, and level of work experience. Learn how these factors can affect the health and safety of young and new workers, as well as how to keep these workers safe by providing the necessary support and supervision. Jessica Brodie, Youth Program Co-ordinator, WorkSafeNB 3. What Winners Do! (S.I.) This workshop will look at key attributes of companies who have successfully managed health and safety. The presenters have researched companies who have won awards at WorkSafeNB s annual health and safety conference. This group of winners will be explored using both leading and trailing indicators. In addition, the workshop will describe characteristics of these organizations, management s role in establishing them, and recommendations for implementation. John Debly, Education Consultant, WorkSafeNB Dino Scichilone, Assistant Director, WorkSafeNB 4. Conflict Resolution (S.I.) Conflict is normal, with no single workplace free from conflict. There are essentially five types of conflict in our day-to-day lives. How we cope with it, resolve it and handle it depends on our ability to assess the what and how. One of the best methods to minimize destructive and costly conflict is to empower people to ask questions and seek out facts to avoid jumping to conclusions and creating assumptions. This session will give you a few takeaways to implement immediately. You can use the methods with internal and external clients, customers and co-workers. Sally Wells, Workplace Consultant, Sally J. Wells Inc. 5. Components of a Successful Health and Safety Program Having a safe work environment where prevention is a priority is important to employers, employees, supervisors and managers, JHSC members and H&S representatives. A business that incorporates safe work practices into its daily routine can realize savings in human and financial costs. To reach those goals, an organization needs a good safety culture, which can only be achieved with a strong and integrated health and safety program. This session will take you through the key components of such a program and explore how your workplace can improve its current practices. Angela Francoeur, Health and Safety Consultant, WorkSafeNB 6. Demystifying Ergonomics Ergonomics is a buzz word often associated with complicated, large-scale changes and expenditures in the workplace. Join us as we demystify ergonomics by demonstrating how seemingly small changes can have a huge impact with minimal expense or expertise required. Become inspired to be the frugal ergonomist in your workplace! Jennifer Kenny, Ergonomics Consultant, WorkSafeNB Dan Ouellette, EHS Manager, Clow Canada 7. (PART I) Health and safety initiatives in health care settings have traditionally focused on risks such as client handling and slips and falls. But risks to health care workers from client violence are just as common, whether in the ER, in nursing homes, on the dementia unit or in clients homes. This session will bring together leaders representing New Brunswick workers and employers to learn about how these risks are being managed in British Columbia. Fidèle Cormier, Assistant Director, WorkSafeNB Stéphane Sonier, Health and Safety Officer, WorkSafeNB

7 6 17. Hearing Conservation Say What? The most common permanent workplace injury is occupational noise-induced hearing loss. There is no visible evidence of a noise-induced hearing loss. Because it does not hurt as it is occurring, it accumulates gradually over time and the effects usually go undetected until long after the damage is done and the injury is permanent. The good news is that it is nearly 100% preventable. This session will provide an overview of the anatomy of the ear, the hearing process, the effects of noise, and steps to follow for an effective hearing conservation program. Michael Sharpe, Audiologist, WHAT Ltd. (Workplace Hearing Assessments & Training Ltd.) 18. Safety A 24x7 Lifestyle A workplace safety culture is growing in New Brunswick. Key to that growth is the attitude that safety is not a cost of doing business, but rather, the right way to live a full and healthy life. At work, safety pays through decreased lost time, increased productivity, enhanced morale and staff loyalty. But safety doesn t stop at the end of the work day it is equally important to bring our safety practices and attitudes home with us. This session on living and leading safety performance will be provided by leaders who understand the value of integrating safety into everything we do. Eugene Nowlan, Owner, Sunny Corner Enterprises Roy Silliker, Executive Director, New Brunswick Construction Safety Association 19. Workplace Wellness and Mental Fitness Learn how a mental fitness approach in the workplace can address a wide range of health and wellness issues. Absenteeism, stress and burnout can erode the quality of work life and may be best understood and addressed by using the mental fitness strategies and tools presented in this session. Adopting a mental fitness approach can lead to greater work satisfaction, employee engagement, improved productivity, better mental and physical health, and employee well-being. Bonnie Fulton, Wellness Consultant, Department of Healthy and Inclusive Communities, Province of New Brunswick 20. Caroline LeBlanc, Senior Actuarial Analyst, WorkSafeNB 21. Components of a Successful Health and Safety Program (French) Having a safe work environment where prevention is a priority is important to employers, employees, supervisors and managers, JHSC members and H&S representatives.
