PAUL ATKINSON, WorkSafeNB s Chief Medical Officer Marijuana and the Workplace (Panel Discussion) (S.I.) As the legal framework surrounding marijuana changes in Canada, marijuana in the workplace is a hot topic. Managing the impacts of marijuana in the context of Canadian workplaces is an emerging area and requires specialized knowledge of medical research, workplace policy and compliance, and case law. During this facilitated discussion, expert panelists from across relevant disciplines will provide delegates with an opportunity to participate in a discussion of the challenges presented by marijuana in the workplace as medical cannabis is increasingly prescribed, and as marijuana approaches legalization in Canada. Thursday, October 5, 9-10:15 a.m. CLOSING PLENARY WITH DR. DAVID POSEN Treating Workplace Stress: A Doctor s Prescription (S.I.) As the pace of work continues to increase, the economy sputters and jobs are in short supply, organizations and the people who run them keep ramping up their employees stress levels. Some workers wear their stress like a badge of honour; others resign themselves to what they see as the new normal and accept the situation as the way it is. The real truth is that workplaces are making people sick. Not enough people are talking about it, and when they do, no one is listening. Join bestselling author and renowned speaker on stress, David Posen MD, for a revealing look at workplace stress - what s causing it and what can cure it. Friday, October 6, 11 a.m.-noon Please mention WorkSafeNB s Health and Safety Conference upon booking to receive the special rates. Fall Protection Systems Solutions Made Simple All sessions are in English, unless otherwise noted as French or Simultaneous Interpretation (S.I.) Session Descriptions 1. Developing a Team Charter Helping Managers Close Barriers to Effective Teamwork (French) Teamwork has many benefits. Physically helping each other distributes the workload fairly, increases productivity, boosts morale, and reduces the risk of injury. Teamwork without proper guidance leads to poor decisions and safety violations. In this breakout session, participants will learn how a team charter can be a great tool to foster productive teamwork among staff, identify and eliminate barriers including poor communication, unclear goals, lack of management involvement and even, perhaps, big egos. Denise Paradis, Executive Director, New Brunswick Continuing Care Safety Association 2. The RIGHT Way to Lead (S.I.) Organizations are increasingly interested in promoting a psychologically healthy workplace, both as a means of improving employee well-being and as a strategic means of enhancing recruitment and reducing turnover. This presentation focuses on how organizational leaders contribute to a psychologically healthy workplace. Dr. Kelloway draws on decades of research to identify the five key tasks that leaders must accomplish to create a psychologically healthy workplace. Dr. Kevin Kelloway, Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health Psychology, Saint Mary s University 3. New Paradigms Mental Health in the Workplace (S.I.) In today s modern workplace, mental health problems have become the leading cause of disability claims, accounting for 70% of workplace disability management costs in Canada. Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Stéphane Grenier knows the toll mental health problems can take on individuals and workplaces firsthand. Traditionally, mental health difficulties in the workplaces have been principally viewed through two lenses the performance lens and the clinical one. Clinicians treat symptoms and leaders manage behaviours. Anchored in more than 15 years experience in improving the way large public and private sector organizations support their employees, Grenier offers pragmatic advice designed to support workplaces in developing corporate cultures of open, non-stigmatizing approaches to mental health and well-being. Blending live accounts, riveting corporate case studies, leading-edge research and passionate arguments that the status quo is no longer acceptable in workplace mental health. Grenier makes us ask ourselves, how did we miss the obvious? How did we miss our people? Stéphane Grenier, Canadian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) 4. Office Ergonomics While hazards in heavy equipment and manufacturing industries are obvious, they are not as obvious but just as present in an office environment. This session will use WorkSafeNB s Office Ergonomics Guidelines for Preventing Musculoskeletal Injuries to explore common issues with office set-ups, with simple solutions and preventive measures to help participants create safe workplaces. Todd Hickey, Ergonomics Consultant, WorkSafeNB 5. Privacy in the Workplace People expect to have some privacy at work, even if they are on their employer s premises and using the employer s equipment. At the same time, employers need certain information about their employees to administer pay and benefits, and to ensure that work is being done efficiently and safely. Employers and employees are subject to privacy laws. This session will review relevant law, and examine existing and emerging risks to privacy, including those presented by mobile workplaces, employee monitoring and the development of new torts in Canada. It will also specifically cover privacy compliance risks in workers compensation and occupational health and safety law. Sonia Lanteigne, Legal Counsel, WorkSafeNB 4
5 6. What s Underground and is it Where it Should Be? Digging in the wrong spot during renovations could damage underground natural gas pipes, telephone, hydro and cable TV wires, as well as water and sewer connections. This could cut off service not just to your home, but also to the entire neighbourhood. Homeowners and contractors are required by law to obtain the location of buried natural gas pipes before breaking ground. Understanding who to contact, and how, can be a real challenge. This presentation will discuss the importance of calling before you dig, the risks of not calling and will include a demo of the new online notification tool. Craig D. McClintock, Damage Prevention Supervisor, Enbridge Gas New Brunswick 7. Ears Need Protection Too The most common permanent workplace injury is occupational noise-induced hearing loss. There is no visible evidence of a noise-induced hearing loss. Because it does not hurt as it is occurring, it accumulates gradually over time and the effects usually go undetected until long after the damage is done and the injury is permanent. The good news is that it is nearly 100% preventable. This session will provide an overview of the ear s anatomy, the hearing process, the effects of noise, and steps to follow for an effective hearing conservation program. Michael Sharpe, Audiologist, WHAT Ltd. (Workplace Hearing Assessments & Training Ltd.) 8. What has Your Attention? Inattentional blindness is the failure to notice a fully visible but unexpected object because attention was engaged on another task, event, or object. This presentation will explore the concept of inattentional blindness and how multitasking, complacency, smart phone use, fatigue and experience can prevent us from seeing and protecting ourselves from hazards that are seemingly in plain sight. Shelley Poirier, Training/Curriculum Development, New Brunswick Construction Safety Association 9. Hoisting, Rigging and Slinging Hoisting and rigging equipment what is really required for inspections and what are two common mistakes made in the field? This session will review the current standards required for inspections of hoisting and rigging equipment, best practices, and common mistakes in the field that can lead to incidents. Kevin Giles, National Safety Manager, Hercules Group of Companies Jeff Shillington, National Service Manager, Hercules Group of Companies 10. Mental Health Awareness Training (S.I.) One in five Canadians will experience a mental health disorder in any given year. Organizations have developed resources such as Employee Assistance Programs specifically to help employees deal with these issues. Yet these resources remain underused and, all too often, mental health problems are dealt with through an organization s discipline procedures. This presentation reviews the development and evaluation of a three-hour course for leaders that has been shown to reduce stigma, increase leaders ability to respond to employees, and substantially reduce the use of disability leave provisions. Dr. Kevin Kelloway, Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health Psychology, Saint Mary s University 11. A Mindful Approach to Health and Safety (S.I.) Paying attention is necessary to staying healthy and safe. Realizing how we pay attention can make a difference in being safe at work and allows us to recognize our own state of health. This presentation will address the role mindfulness plays within the workplace safety environment and how mindfulness promotes a healthy state of mind. 12. Slip and Trip Injuries It s not Just Bad Luck! (French) Slip and trip injuries account for almost 19% of all lost-time claims in New Brunswick. Often these types of injuries are poorly analyzed and very few control measures are implemented to prevent future injuries. Learn how to identify the hazards, assess their risk level and develop control measures and strategies to prevent future occurrences of slip and trip injuries. Gino Thomas, Senior Ergonomics Consultant, WorkSafeNB 13. Expanding Disability Management in New Brunswick Workplaces Expanding disability management in New Brunswick workplaces is a new focus for WorkSafeNB. Disability management principles, early and safe return to work, modified return to work and direct referral to physiotherapy for soft tissue injuries will be discussed. Katie Melvin, Rehabilitation Program Analyst- Physiotherapy, WorkSafeNB Heather Forster, Rehabilitation Program Analyst - Occupational Therapy, WorkSafeNB 14. Conveyor Safety Conveyor systems allow for a wide variety of materials to be transported quickly and efficiently, making them popular in the material handling and packaging industries. Understanding conveyor system hazards is important. This session will explore the different types of conveyors, relevant atrisk job tasks, statistics on serious conveyor accidents, applicable OHS regulations, risk assessment and risk reduction. Stéphane Sonier, Health and Safety Officer, WorkSafeNB 15. WorkSafeNB s Prevention Services WorkSafeNB not only provides compensation and services to injured workers and their employers, but also services to help prevent accidents in the first place. This session outlines WorkSafeNB s prevention services, including education workshops, workplace ergonomics, health and safety consultations and other injury prevention strategies. Learn more about these services and how you can access and benefit from them. Geneviève Pilon, Assistant Director Northeast Region, WorkSafeNB 16. Conveyor Safety (French) Conveyor systems allow for a wide variety of materials to be transported quickly and efficiently, making them popular in the material handling and packaging industries. Understanding conveyor system hazards is important. This session will explore the different types of conveyors, relevant atrisk job tasks, statistics on serious conveyor accidents, applicable OHS regulations, risk assessment and risk reduction. Stéphane Sonier, Health and Safety Officer, WorkSafeNB 17. Psychological Fitness (S.I.) Study after study documents the increasing burden of stress in our lives. We also know that some individuals are resilient in that they seem able to deal with increasing amounts of stress with little or no negative consequence. Military psychologists have introduced the notion of psychological fitness our ability to withstand stress, accomplish needed tasks and maintain a positive outlook as a key determinant of resilience. This presentation draws on existing evidence to suggest four specific practices to increase psychological fitness. Dr. Kevin Kelloway, Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health Psychology, Saint Mary s University Dr. Shelley Parker, Psychologist, NB Power 5
6 18. Shaping Safety Culture Through Leadership It s the Small Things (S.I.) How does an organization transform from one where safety is a priority to one where it is a value that results in sustainable change? This session will explore best practices of safety leadership, and focus on the importance of understanding and committing to those small things that have big impacts on health and safety culture. Leaders will be challenged to reflect upon their leadership styles to appreciate the impact of their own words and actions on their teams safety-related behaviours. Nancy Boutcher, Assistant Director Safety Leadership, WorkSafeNB 19. Talking Safety with Young Workers (Panel Discussion) More than a thousand young workers are injured each year in New Brunswick. Young workers can have unique needs depending on their age, personal development, and work experience. Learn how to communicate with young workers about health and safety as well as how to provide these workers with the training, support and supervision they need. You ll hear from the perspectives of both a local employer and a young worker. Jessica MacDonald, Business & Community Engagement Co-ordinator, WorkSafeNB 20. Residential Construction Safety A Prevention Initiative WorkSafeNB initiated a safety strategy in April 2016 to increase education and compliance efforts in the residential construction sector. WorkSafeNB officers are visiting residential project sites to educate employers and employees on legislative requirements and conduct health and safety inspections. This presentation will review this multi-year strategy, introduce resources and highlight common orders issued and experienced during these inspections. Jean-Claude Babineau, Health and Safety Officer, WorkSafeNB Jason Waye, Health and Safety Officer, WorkSafeNB 21. Developing a Team Charter Helping Managers Close Barriers to Effective Teamwork Teamwork has many benefits. Denise Paradis, Executive Director, New Brunswick Continuing Care Safety Association 22. WorkSafeNB s Prevention Services (French) WorkSafeNB not only provides compensation and services to injured workers and their employers, but also services to help prevent accidents in the first place. This session outlines WorkSafeNB s prevention services, including education workshops, workplace ergonomics, health and safety consultations and other injury prevention strategies. Learn more about these services and how you can access and benefit from them. Geneviève Pilon, Assistant Director Northeast Region, WorkSafeNB 23. Eye Safety Take It Personally! WorkSafeNB is a proud safety partner of the CNIB, and supports its annual Eye Safety Program that helps build workplace safety culture among trades students in New Brunswick s post-secondary institutions. This presentation will include real-life stories, powerful visuals and interactive exercises. The goal is to connect with the audience on a level that makes them consider the effects of a devastating eye injury, while motivating them to take personal responsibility for wearing appropriate eye protection and following workplace safety protocols. Christine Kennedy-Babineau, Manager, Program and Resource Development, CNIB New Brunswick Julie Sirois, Low Vision Specialist, CNIB New Brunswick 24. Understanding Workers Compensation Assessment Rates (S.I.) WorkSafeNB provides no-fault workplace accident and disability insurance, funded through annual premiums paid by employers. Learn how WorkSafeNB determines your assessment rate based on the claim history for both industry sectors and individual workplaces to sustain a compensation system that protects New Brunswick s workers and employers. WorkSafeNB (TBD) 25. Occupational Health and Safety Vulnerability Why we Need a New Measure (S.I.) The term vulnerable workers and the goal of decreasing vulnerability are often used in the area of occupational health and safety, without a clear definition of what vulnerability means, or how to evaluate whether vulnerability is increasing or decreasing. This presentation will describe the development of a framework and associated 27-item measure to more accurately assess OHS vulnerability at the individual worker level. Using survey data from British Columbia and Ontario, we will provide demonstrations of how this measure enables a greater understanding of which dimensions of vulnerability are associated with risk of work injury, how dimensions of vulnerability differ across groups of vulnerable workers, and how to use the measure to evaluate the effectiveness of primary prevention activities. The presentation will conclude with recommendations on the future use of this measure by provincial agencies and workplaces, and how reducing vulnerability could become a system level metric. Peter Smith, Senior Scientist, Institute for Work and Health, University of Toronto 26. How to Create, Manage and Implement Your Electrical Safety Program What employers need to know about building a robust electrical safety program as described in the industry standard CSA-Z462. An electrical safety program includes elements such as planning, implementation, documentation, evaluation, and continuous improvement. Learn how electrical safety fits into an overall OHS system and should be treated no differently than fall arrest or confined space. Jonathan Travis, Electrical Safety Consultant and Trainer, Leaf Electrical Safety 27. Fall Protection Systems Solutions Made Simple Working at heights can present numerous obstacles and challenges. As safety professionals we strive to eliminate fatalities and injuries while working at elevation. This session will provide guidance for analyzing, choosing and implementing the proper fall protection system for your specific application. We will cover current industry trends, review the ABCs of fall protection, pre-engineered vs engineered, and discuss hot topics such as leading edge, foot level tie-off and rescue. We will also look at what future technology may bring. Lou Gould, National Business Development Manager - Fall Protection, Hercules Group of Companies All sessions are in English, unless otherwise noted as French or Simultaneous Interpretation (S.I.) 6
