2016 Petrochem Forum Speakers and Topics Overview Ryan Toole Ontario Ministry of Labour, Policy Analyst, Prevention Division, Training and Safety Program Prevention Update Ryan Toole began his career in the Ministry of Labour and currently works in the Prevention Office. His current files include both the working at heights and construction health and safety awareness training initiatives, and he also worked on the implementation of awareness training regulation and the subsequent supporting materials. Ryan often presents on behalf of the Training and Safety Programs Branch to stakeholders regarding the files that he is working on. Prior to working at the Prevention Office, Ryan worked in the Health and Safety Policy Branch at the Ministry of Labour and worked alongside senior advisors on regulatory amendments to multiple regulations, including updates to Ontario s occupational exposure limits. Ryan's presentation will provide an update on major initiatives in the Ministry of Labour's Prevention Office including Working at Heights Training Standards, Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification Training, Construction Health and Safety Action Plan, Mandatory Training in Construction and Accreditation/Recognition Programs.

Marni Tivy Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Policy Regulatory Updates Marni is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Ministry of Labour s Health and Safety Policy Branch. She has extensive work experience in the area of occupational health and safety policy and regulation development as well as practical experience in the application of the legislation. Marni began her career with the Ministry as an Industrial Health and Safety Inspector and has worked on a wide variety of health and safety projects during her career with the Ministry. She is the lead advisor on the Ministry s recent consultations on proposed changes to occupational exposure limits, new construction occupational health initiatives and the Ministry s all-sector regulatory proposal with respect to noise. Marni holds a Masters of Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science from Queen s University. The Ministry of Labour has a number of new regulatory initiatives underway to strengthen health and safety protections for Ontario workers from occupational disease. Examples include the new all-sector noise regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (O. Reg. 381/15 Noise) and proposed updates to the hazardous substance regulations, including the introduction of new respiratory protection and measuring provisions, changes to medical surveillance as well new OELs based on the annual updates recommended by the ACGIH.

Stacey Blundell, M.Sc., CIH, ROH 3M Personal Safety Division, Senior Application Development Specialist Stacey Blundell has worked for 3M for 16 years. She started as a Corporate Industrial Hygienist supporting 3M's manufacturing sites in Ontario. She currently works for 3M's Personal Safety Division providing bilingual technical, regulatory and product support both internally and externally to 3M's customers. She has an Honours Degree in Biology from McMaster University and a Master s Degree in Occupational Health from McGill. She is also a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Registered Occupation Hygienist (ROH). She is based in Montreal. Respiratory Protection for Workers in Metalworking In its simplest terms, welding is a process by which 2 or more pieces of metal are joined together. There are over 70 different processes, each requiring a high degree of skill and advanced technology. The hazards welders face are numerous. Examples include: noise, ergonomics, electric shock, burns, exposure to UV, IR and visible light, and exposure to metal fumes and associated gases. This presentation will focus on the respiratory hazards faced by welders. Special attention will be paid to manganese and hexavalent chromium. Grinding, other related tasks and personal protective equipment will also be discussed.

Sit to Stand; Plan to Move Brenda Mallat BHK, CCPE; Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Brenda Mallat is a Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (CCPE) with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers, (OHCOW) Windsor. She graduated with a Bachelor of Human Kinetics, honours Movement Science, Coop., from the University of Windsor. Brenda s been working as an ergonomist for the past 17 years and has consulted in many work environments ranging from manufacturing, services, offices, education, and health care. Her expertise includes performing ergonomic assessments and consulting on MSD Prevention programming. She has also provided expert opinion on the work-relatedness of MSD injuries for many workers in various sectors. Brenda is President for the Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE), Ontario region. She has been a member of ACE since 1999, and has held various positions on the Ontario and National councils. Prolonged sitting has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even death. But how much do we really sit in a typical day and what are we at risk of? This session will address such questions and examine the term prolonged as it relates to sitting. Recommendations for avoiding prolonged sitting will be provided as they relate to both the workplace and everyday life. Many ergonomic recommendations and changes, whether they are proactive or reactive in nature or related to RTW issues, tend to neglect a major aspect of the cognitive side; how our brain controls our movement. Our movement patterns and habits are controlled by a specific area of our brain, and understanding how this works is critical when designing tasks, making recommendations for changes, or when training workers on how to perform their jobs.

Rose Atkins Lambton Public Health Unit Workplace Wellness Rose has enjoyed employment as a Health Promoter with Lambton Public Health for the past 16 years. In her role as a workplace health consultant, she assists Lambton County employers in creating healthy and productive workplaces that support the physical, mental, and social well-being of all employees. As the chairperson of Lambton County s Wellness Committee, Rose has gained practical experience in reaching over 1,200 employees operating from 57 locations. Rose is community-minded and volunteers with several organizations in St. Clair Township. She is currently focused on planning and promoting the St. Clair River Run scheduled July 16th. With most people spending about two thirds of their waking hours on the job, it is increasingly recognized that the workplace itself has a powerful effect on people's health. Traditional attempts to create healthy workplaces focused on the safety of the physical environment and injury prevention for workers. Today, Workplace Wellness is about taking care of employees, establishing a positive work environment, and paying attention to the factors that keep employees safe, engaged, and productive. A good workplace wellness program enhances the well-being of the employees and the organization as a whole. Rose will review a comprehensive framework for a healthy and productive workplace. She will provide documents to assess your existing workplace wellness supports and identify opportunities for future workplace wellness initiatives. Throughout her presentation, Rose will refer to the 13 workplace factors included in the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace and provide supportive resources to implement the standard.

WESTERN UNIVERSITY SPEAKERS Morgan Hall BHSc, MA As a Western University alumni, Morgan obtain both her undergraduate degree in Health Sciences & Psychology, and Masters in Kinesiology with a coaching specialization. Colleen Biggs Colleen graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2012, with an Honours Specialization in Medical Sciences. Shortly thereafter, she accepted a position working as the lab manager for an up-and-coming translational prostate cancer research lab. During her three and a half years here, she presented posters at multiple international conferences, authored two papers and secured two patents. She was also recently awarded the Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship for the viral safety program she implemented within the lab. Deciding to make a career change, in the fall of 2015, she returned to UWO to complete the Occupational Health and Safety Management Diploma and is currently completing her practicum at Labatt Breweries.
