2 Roslyn M. Brock Chosen to Lead Bon Secours Community Works Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and Vice President, Advocacy and Government Relations for Bon Secours Health System, Inc., has taken the helm as Executive Director of Bon Secours Community Works, the newly renamed community and economic development subsidiary of Bon Secours Baltimore Health System. It s exciting to return to Bon Secours Baltimore and participate in the integration of Dr. Ross healthcare vision, said Ms. Brock. As Executive Director of Community Works, she will be responsible for the ongoing operations and future growth of the community-based programs and their integration into Bon Secours new vision. Ms. Brock s strong background in strategic planning and coalition building will enable her to build upon the current community programs that are so much a part of our mission and fabric of the community. The core community and economic programs that have been so successful since its inception will be reviewed and, where appropriate, redesigned to meet the changing needs of the community. The impact of these initiatives on Baltimore City cannot be understated. Care more than others think is wise, Risk more than others think is safe, Dream more than others think is practical and Expect more than others think is possible. From , Brock chaired the NAACP National Board s convention planning committee. From , Brock served as Vice Chairman of the National Board. A recipient of numerous healthcare, community service and leadership awards, Brock s leadership skills have been recognized by several national publications and organizations. 3 New Housing and Community Development Executive Director Appointed George Kleb, former Executive Director for Bon Secours Community Works, has been appointed Executive Director Bon Secours Housing and Community Development. As we evaluated our current portfolio, we realized how much the size and scope of the housing division of Bon Secours Baltimore Health System has grown over the past 20 years, creating a need for this new leadership position, said Dr. Samuel Ross, CEO, Bon Secours Baltimore Health System. I am excited to take on this challenge, especially with our new strategic focus on re-engaging our community to address its health needs. Safe, quality, affordable housing is everyone s right and Bon Secours is positioned to continue making a significant impact for many years to come, commented George Kleb. George Kleb Bon Secours Baltimore Health System currently owns and/or manages six senior buildings with a total of 530 units of housing, along with 119 units of Bon Secours Apartments. This is a major component of our work in West Baltimore and requires focused leadership. George s experience, at all levels of the housing program, insures that we can move forward with this important part of our mission in West Baltimore. The relationships he has forged with community leaders will be key to the success of the Healthy Community Advisory Board. For the past 20 years, George has been a strong and successful leader with Community Works, and in this new position he will help accelerate the development and management of quality affordable housing. In addition, George will continue to support our ongoing community engagement efforts, including the launch of our new Healthy Community Advisory Board, announced Dr. Ross. George s leadership will allow Bon Secours Baltimore Health System to adapt to the changing housing market, continue building synergy with community associations, and further the process of revitalizing the Southwest Baltimore community of which Bon Secours is an integral part. 4 Bon Secours Mission: To Teach Build Community To Serve At its core, Health care within the Catholic system is seen as a reflection of the healing ministry of Jesus and great care is taken to treat each person, both patient and staff, as a unique and sacred individual, states Curtis Clark, Vice President, Mission, Bon Secours Baltimore Health System. At Bon Secours Baltimore Health System, our healing ministry is greatly influenced by the integration of our mission to teach, build community and to serve into all aspects of care. This integration of mission is purposeful in its approach to educate all levels of the organization from board members, to senior leaders, directors and front line staff. Mission in Action Bon Secours patient advocacy team is uniquely designed to meet the healthcare needs of today s patients. The team is led by Patient Advocate Eve DeVaro, who holds a master s degree and has over 10 years experience in applied healthcare ethics. This specialized expertise has helped her in the development of her staff of Patient Liaisons affectionately referred to as the pink ladies, or simply as pinkies. Mission is the reason for our being here. It was what led the Sisters to Baltimore in 1881 and what continues to lead us today. The Patient Liaison s main function is to be actively present with each patient, listening to his or her comments and facilitating intervention if necessary, says Eve. Our Patient Liaisons are trained to engage patients in ways that develop trust and create dialogue that extends beyond the traditional patient care experience. There was a patient on our telemetry unit who was anxious and scared about being discharged. He expressed an interest in drug rehab so that he wouldn t be exposed to the temp tations of the street, continued Eve. 5 something he d never experienced before. The Patient Liaison spent several hours with him at the bedside, called on me to help expedite a transfer to our behavioral health unit, and followed the patient there to make sure that he felt safe and heard. A second Patient Liaison shared a story of an elderly patient who indicated she wanted a visit from someone. The Patient Liaison sat with her, holding her hand, and listening to her talk about her life. Clearly, this patient was in need of emotional as well as physical healing. Our Patient Liaisons afforded her the opportunity to feel the love and compassion of Bon Secours mission. A Tradition of Mission For more than 15 years, as the Patient Advocate, Sister Mary Rita, C.B.S., a committed gentle soul, walked the halls of Bon Secours Hospital, her heart and mind focused on the needs of patients and their families. She visited patients bedside, accompanied them to tests, helped them to comprehend their diagnosis, and with her gentleness, comforted all in her care. Sr. Mary Rita, now retired from her patient advocacy position, dedicates three days a week to integrating the mission of the Sisters in the healing process with the Bon Secours employees. Our people are our greatest asset. They, too, need to feel the love, dignity and compassion of our mission in their lives and work so they may not only work to their greatest potential, but can generously extend dignity to those in their care patients and colleagues alike. Our mission is the very fiber of the building and it belongs to every single department and individual. It is our people that make us different, says Sr. Mary Rita. Bon Secours Emergency Department Saves Lives Tanisha Fizer s son, Ryan, had multiple health issues including Cerebral Palsy, epileptic seizures, and hydrocephalus (water on the brain) as an infant. He was recently admitted to Bon Secours in respiratory distress. We were brought here by ambulance, when our regular hospital could not accept emergencies. Elaine Clark, R.N. recalls seeing Ms. Fizer when her son was still in the Emergency Room being treated. Ms. Fizer was clearly afraid for her son. She was distraught and cried out why did God send us here? Ms. Clark confidently approached Ms. Fizer and told her that she would find out why God sent them to Bon Secours. Ms. Fizer was afraid of having doctors who were not familiar with To me, Bon Secours means love, Ryan s condition, and nursing staff care and compassion. unable to meet his needs. I felt helpless and had to depend upon strangers for Ryan s care. The dedicated staff here saved his life. They have been wonderful to him. No stranger to Emergency Rooms and doctors, Ms. Fizer was informed at seven months gestation that her baby would be a special needs child. The doctors encouraged me to send him to an institution, but I told them that my mother didn t put me out, so I wouldn t put my child out. Ryan had six surgeries in the first few years of life, including shunt surgery for the hydrocephalus. I was told that my son wouldn t live past the age of two. Smiling, Fizer added, He turned 20 on February 12, 2012! Ryan was enrolled in the William S. Baer School, a Baltimore City Public School serving children with multiple disabilities, at nine months of age. Ryan has thrived at the Baer School. He gets physical, occupational, aqua, and vision therapy. He will age out next year when he turns 21, so Fizer has begun searching for other adult day care options. After his treatment at Bon Secours, Ryan was discharged to a nursing home for follow up treatment. Ms. Fizer commented that she wished he could have stayed at Bon Secours. To me, Bon Secours means love, care and compassion. 5

6 Bon Secours: An Economic Anchor in West Baltimore Bon Secours Baltimore Health System s roots in West Baltimore date back more than 130 years and we are extremely proud of our decades of service to the community. Our health care and communitystrengthening work have touched the lives of many people. But just what is the economic impact of Bon Secours on the community we serve and the entire City of Baltimore? A new analysis by the University of Baltimore s Jacob France Institute considered that question and documented how important Bon Secours is to the economy of our city. Among its findings, the analysis showed that Bon Secours Baltimore Health System: Contributes $226.3 million in activity to the city of Baltimore s economy, through direct and indirect effects. Directly employs nearly 1,000 workers who are earning more than $67 million in compensation annually. Had revenues of $138.8 million in fiscal year 2010, which generated $46.9 million in indirect effects, through purchases of supplies and services from city companies, and $40.6 million in induced effects. Indirectly supports 1,532 jobs that provide $94 million in compensation annually. Generates an estimated $7.6 million in combined state and local tax revenues. These numbers underscore that Bon Secours not only touches lives through our hospital, medical care and community- focused work, we are also a critically important economic anchor in West Baltimore, says CEO Samuel L. Ross, M.D. This analysis will help us as we work to shape a new vision for Bon Secours Baltimore s future one that will allow us to better serve the people of Baltimore for many years to come. Sr. Mary Shimo 50th Jubilee Sr. Mary Shimo, CBS, Manager of Volunteers-Student Programs at Bon Secours Baltimore Health System is celebrating her 50th year as a Sister of Bon Secours. Sr. Mary entered the Congregation of Bon Secours in 1962 and professed her final vows in She received her bachelor s in nursing science from the University of Maryland and her Masters of Arts in Religion and Medical Care from George Washington University. No one could have anticipated all the things I have done from nursing to being a chaplain to running a hospital gift shop for six years. It has been a journey of surprises with so many places and directions I never would have thought to go in, exclaims Sr. Mary. 7 A WORD FROM SAMUEL ROSS, MD, MS CEO, Bon Secours Baltimore Health System It is my pleasure to celebrate with you the progress the Bon Secours Baltimore Health System has made over the last five years. There have been times when people have doubted our ability to remedy the challenges that were presented to us. However, Bon Secours has proved that it could persevere and now, in 2012, we can look back with pride at our achievements. Among the milestones that I am most proud is the balanced budget that was achieved in Due in large part to the teamwork exhibited by our staff and the support of many in the community and the political arena, we were able to secure the state grant which enabled us to focus our efforts on improvement and looking forward The initiation of the Primary Care Access study is another important event on which our future rests. The healthcare environment is changing rapidly. Urban healthcare delivery is unique and it is critical that we adapt to meet evolving needs. In 2012, we received the results of an Economic Impact Study (see article on preceding page) demonstrating Bon Secours impact on the community. Bon Secours Baltimore Health System directly employs nearly 1,000 individuals, contributes over $226 million in economic activity to the City s economy and has built nearly 600 units of affordable housing. The effect of Bon Secours remaining a vibrant entity in this community cannot be understated. We have recently entered into a new alliance through the Healthy Communities Advisory Board. This group, which includes community leaders, healthcare enterprises and the city, will endeavor to forge a new path utilizing the synergy that is developed through our unified commitment to the residents of Southwest Baltimore. 9 Supporting Bon Secours from the Ground Up David McGinnis, Foundation Board Member That was back in 1998, when the Community Center first began making an impact on the lives of the families and children in the area. Dave points to a hand-painted fleurde-lis on the wall behind his desk. He received the hand-painted piece after the opening of the Community Center and believes that one of the kids painted it. The framed piece of art is a symbol of the priceless work being done by the Family Support Center, a commitment that continues still today. Things have changed a lot since Dave began building and renovating at Bon Secours. Along with many others, Dave was impressed by Dr. Ross vision and his direction for the organization. Despite the challenges facing the neighborhood, Bon Secours has chosen to stay and to continue trying to improve the quality of life for the residents. They are truly faith in action! They have never given up on their mission to be good help and Dave is proud to be a part of their effort. David McGinnis has construction in his veins. Growing up in Carroll County, the son of a Whiting- Turner employee, Dave learned plenty about the construction industry. So when he grew up and went to work, Whiting-Turner was a natural choice. As a medical construction expert, Dave is responsible for the Baltimore-Washington area and thus began work with Bon Secours in the early 1990s. Dave has seen Bon Secours Baltimore Health System through renovations and reconstruction several times of the past two decades. He really got to know Bon Secours when working on the construction of the Community Center. It was there that he realized Bon Secours was more than just a hospital the work of the staff and volunteers has made a huge impact on the (West Baltimore) Community. The St. Martin s Convent on Fulton Street was little more than a shell of a building before the community center was built. Dave remembers birds flying through the old building during the first day he walked into the old structure. Although we were spared a great deal of the snow and ice this winter, this time of year remains a renewal of both physical and spiritual life. At Bon Secours, we have just celebrated the support of our many donors and friends at the annual Donor Wall Celebration breakfast. Since initiating this tradition several years ago, our donor base has grown so that we now take over the entire dining room for the event. It was so exciting this year to see people that I ve known over my 20-year history with the organization and meet so many new donors. The growing number of supporters enables us to continue our mission to provide good help to the residents of West Baltimore. As always, we are grateful for the team of talented individuals at the Hospital, the Community Support Center, and all our other locations for their dedication and their unrelenting hard work. 11 HOW YOU CANHELP IN 2012 Family and Women Services Bon Secours Family Support Center provides important resources for young, low-income families with children birth to age four. The Women s Resource Center is a place of support, counseling and service referrals for women facing homelessnes and basic needs crisis. These services give women a stable foundation on which to build strong families and be economically self-sufficient. Combined, these programs seek $870,000 annually. Economic Development and Financial Education Bon Secours manages numerous programs to tackle the education and employment disparities of community residents. The Career Development program provides many services including GED preparation, mentoring and equipment support services, which enable participants to gain employment or advance a career goal. Our Money Place is a vital and unique program providing financial literacy, individual financial counseling, and free or low-cost tax preparation to families seeking economic self- sufficiency. These programs seek $265,000 annually. Services for Seniors Recognizing the need for safe, affordable housing, Bon Secours has built six senior resident buildings in West Baltimore providing 530 units of affordable housing for low- income seniors and people with disabilities thus enabling these seniors to age in place. In addition, Bon Secours provides wrap-around services through service coordinators that arrange for health and wellness appointments, health and nutrition classes and accessibility to prescription drugs and transportation arrangements. The cost to provide these services is $220,017 annually. Teleheart The Teleheart program treats individuals living with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart failure. These patients, the majority of whom are lowincome seniors, meet with a clinical nurse manager who provides in-patient counseling and conducts follow-up home visits. Teleheart also provides free classes on health topics and has a proven record of reducing Emergency Room visits, length of in-patient stays and hospital readmission rates. Funding of $110,000 annually allows this foundational program to continue. Sister Theophane Fund The Sister Theophane Fund provides a patient-centered safety net of financial support to those in need of medical care, prescription drugs and medical supplies, or those facing a basic needs crisis. The fund extends this same assistance to employees of Bon Secours when in need. This vital emergency fund seeks to raise $100,000 annually. Make a Difference YOUR GIFT OF: $10 helps provide a hot, nutritious meal to women experiencing homelessness $30 helps enable one student to receive a full week of GED prep classes $50 helps cover transportation costs so that seniors can attend a group event $100 helps provide transportation for GED parents and children for one month $175 helps cover development child-care for one child for one week $500 helps in-school youth build entrepreneurial skills and business acumen $750 helps cover the entire cost for GED classes for 25 participants for one week 11
