4 The Sisters of Providence Health System has the great pleasure of announcing that Cynthia and William Lyons have made a one million dollar challenge gift to Transforming Cancer Care The Capital Campaign for the Sister Caritas Cancer Center. The Lyons gift will support the 26,000 square foot expansion of the Cancer Center, marking a new chapter in the level and breadth of oncology services at Mercy Medical Center. The Lyons $1 million challenge gift will support the expansion of the Sister Caritas Cancer Center. WHY SUCH A GIFT? We have been inspired by the high level of care and compassion that runs throughout the Sisters of Providence Health System, says Cindy Lyons. The work being done at the Cancer Center is especially exciting. Under the leadership of Dr. Philip Glynn, Director of Oncology, the Cancer Center staff has expanded significantly to meet patient need. That need is great. By 2022, the demand for outpatient cancer services is expected to grow by 26%. In addition to increasing treatment space, the $15 million expansion will bolster the Center s already strong capabilities by enhancing communications between the oncology staff and facilitating ease of access to existing services. The design of new infusion bays will increase privacy for patients, as well as for a supporting family member or friend. We are so impressed with the new leadership and forward thinking of Mercy Medical Center and its oncology center. The commitment and vision of the physicians directly involved with the growth of the Cancer Center speaks to the investment of the hospital community. The new plan unites state of the art treatment, research and clinical trial opportunities with Mercy s trademark mission driven qualities of compassion and respect for the individual.

5 A PERSONAL CONNECTION The Lyons history with the Sisters of Providence Health System extends beyond philanthropy. The family has called Western Massachusetts their home for many years. Two of their three children were born at Providence Hospital, when babies were still being delivered there. More recently, Bill Lyons fell seriously ill and was rushed to the emergency room at Mercy Medical Center. It was a frightening time, recalls Cindy. But everyone in the emergency room was professional and reassuring. The swift diagnosis, surgical intervention and quality of care literally saved Bill s life. We now refer to that experience as our Christmas Miracle. CONFIDENCE IN GOOD STEWARDSHIP Bill states that having confidence in an institution s quality and management is critically important. We were so grateful to Mercy s emergency room staff and physicians. A previous gift was given to support quality improvement training and team process improvements in the ER. A recent presentation by the department showed us how effectively our gift was used to improve patient satisfaction and wait time metrics. That experience gives us tremendous confidence that Mercy Medical Center will use this challenge gift responsibly, in ways that make a tangible difference. WHY THE CHALLENGE? This expansion is important, says Cindy, because directly or indirectly, cancer touches all of us. People really do want to be part of something that is successful and meaningful. We sincerely hope our gift inspires others in our community to give as well.
