1 Rotary District 9820 Issue 5 - November 2011 Rotary Foundation Month N e w s l e t t e r FROM THE GOVERNOR S DESK. During November, we are reminded that this is the month in which we celebrate the many wonderful programs and achievements of the Rotary Foundation, OUR Foundation. During my club visit program, I have, on many occasions, been requested to provide details of how clubs can best access the programs of the Rotary Foundation. Here is your opportunity to update your understanding of these programs! Join us at the Rotary Foundation Seminar, being conducted in conjunction with the District Annual General Meeting, at Monash University, Berwick Campus, on Sunday 20th November. When the Rotary Foundation Future Vision Plan is introduced in 2013, we will see some fundamental changes to these programs, so grasp this personal opportunity to be ahead of the game. Our Group Study Exchange team, to visit District 6270, Wisconsin, in April 2012, has now been finalised. Selections were made from a field of outstanding candidates, with some team members being selected to take advantage of the unique vocational opportunities encompassed in our host District. I pass on my sincere congratulations to the successful candidates, and strongly encourage those who were not successful to reapply next year. Details of the team are included elsewhere in Latitude 38. My sincere appreciation goes to all Clubs who interviewed, and submitted candidates. Clubs in Gippsland were not widely represented, and I encourage them to become involved in this wonderful Rotary program, to provide young professionals with this career enrichment opportunity. As I mentioned earlier, Jill and I have now completed our official visits to all 47 Clubs in our District; and what a wonderful experience it has been. The diversity of our District Clubs is amazing, as is the range of their projects, and the aspirations that they hold. I thank the Presidents, Boards, and members of all these Clubs for the warmth of their welcome, the enthusiasm of their planning, and for their support of the ideals of Rotary. My best wishes, Yours in Rotary, Kel. Hobby Table of Contents. 2 . GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE DISTRICT 9820 & DISTRICT 6270 Group Study Exchange is an amazing program and this year s outbound team will represent DG Kel, our district and Australia very well indeed. On Sunday, 2nd October, the Team Leader selection was held in Berwick. The Rotarian leading our team to Wisconsin in April 2012 is PP Jeff Smallacombe from RC Somerville Tyabb. Jeff was an excellent choice and will make us all very proud. Over a two day period, weekend of 22nd and 23rd October, the team to go to D6270, Wisconsin was selected. The panel, consisted of DG Kel Hobby & Jill, Foundation Chairman PDG Dennis Heslin, DGE Tony Spring and Carla, DGN Tim Moore, Team Leader Jeff Smallacombe, Past Team Leader, Steve Daly and myself. It was a very full and inspiring weekend, made extremely difficult by the high calibre of applicants. I sincerely thank the Rotary Clubs who put forward all applicants, and for those who weren t successful, I sincerely hope they will try again next year. The standard was extremely high, and in the end we were splitting hairs as to who would go. In saying that a decision was made, and we have an outstanding team as follows: Team Leader PP Jeffrey (Jeff) Robert Smallacombe (RC Somerville Tyabb) Manager/Financial Controller - Safety Steel Structures Pty Ltd Team Members: Timothy (Tim) Ernest Bartel - Sponsored by RC Mornington Physical Education Teacher - Mornington Secondary College Allen William Van Kuyk - Sponsored by RC Foster Dairy Farmer Myfanwy (Myf) Kathleen Guay - Sponsored by RC Frankston North Speech Pathologist Grade 2 - Peninsula Health Lauren Kathleen Caldwell - Sponsored by RC Seaford Carrum Downs Speech Pathologist Grade 1 - Peninsula Health The team from Wisconsin are as follows: Team Leader: PDG Catherine (Cathy Zimmerman) Team Members: Jenny Knuth - BrownBoots Interactive - Director of Creativity/Graphic Designer Stacy Osten - Brudny s Supermarkets - Financial Analyst & Resource Manager Colleen Hahn - Society Insurance, Property, Auto, Liability Claims Supervisor U.S. Bank - Leader Development Program Society I have received interest s from quite a few clubs wishing to host, and I sincerely thank them. Their programs are to be forwarded to me by 11th November, and I look forward to receiving them. We have an excellent team to represent D9820 in Wisconsin and look forward to the team coming over from the USA. Yours in Rotary Lynne Westland

3 POLIO UPDATE Polio Statistics as at 26 October show new cases for 2011 worldwide to that date totalled 489, compared to the same time in cases. India has only one reported case and this occurred in February. Authorities are continuing to immunise many times a year and the hopes of having India removed from the list of endemic countries are very high. An alarming fact is that China has had 18 cases reported and this only reinforces the need to continue the efforts to eradicate this disease so that it cannot travel to previously polio free countries. It is great to see that the Australian government on behalf of all Australians has announced it will give $50 million towards polio eradication. Rotarians were asked to apply pressure to the government and this obviously helped. I attach a letter from PDG Bernie Rogers, Zone Polio Coordinator thanking Rotarian for their support. Polio Eradication Campaign THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU To all the Rotarians who sent letters to the Prime Minister and your local members, or used the electronic links to support our partners at the Global Poverty Project, a very big thank you. As many of you will know our Australian Government did indeed take the lead at CHOGM and announced a grant of $50m for the polio eradication campaign. This amount will make a significant dent in the gap funding (approximately US$250m) for the final push to eradicate polio and was exactly what we had asked for. I am not sure whether our letter and campaign had a big impact or not, but it certainly helped. Feedback from some government staff indicated that our letters were noticed; and the combination of Rotarians and the younger generation impacted by the Global Poverty Program team did indicate a wide range of Australians who want polio beaten now. This has been a fantastic result for Rotary and shows what can be done with a genuine cause and genuine commitment. Thank you again. Bernie Rodgers Zone Challenge Coordinator We are getting closer day by day and clubs are asked to continue their wonderful support for the eradication of tis terrible disease. Ray Martin District 9820 Polio Chairman
