2 Welcome to Iowa State University - This summer marks our 12 th and final year of summer PLTW core trainings at ISU. We hope you will take advantage of this unique networking opportunity to hear and learn from other education professionals while you learn and stay on one of the nation s most beautiful campuses. Our college offers 12 majors and five minors through eight engineering departments with the 7 th largest undergraduate enrollment in the U.S. Our facilities and research are some of the most innovative in the world. While our role as an affiliate university will end following core training, we will continue our engagement strategies in working with schools through our ongoing outreach efforts to be expert consult on researchbased best practice for student STEM engagement, FIRST programming, camps and engineering events, as well as continuing our efforts to connect education and industry through our newest program we are taking the lead on, Manufacturing Day in Iowa. We are excited to be collaborating with multiple statewide entities to partner schools with local industry for greater collaborations and increased exposure for students and schools to economic development opportunities in and around their communities. Watch for communications from us on this exciting opportunity for your students of all STEM interest areas. In order for you and your district to plan accordingly for future support and training, please note that PLTW will no longer have Iowa university affiliates and is moving to a business model eliminating the current relationship with the 58 national university affiliates to hosting their own training sites in approximately 20 metropolitan cities. PLTW staff will manage trainings, assist schools and put on regional conferences. Trainings are currently not planned within the state of Iowa with the closest trainings currently planned by PLTW will be Madison, Wisconsin; Kansas City, Missouri; and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Please reach out directly to PLTW Solution Center for more details. Thank you for choosing Iowa State University as your training destination and congratulations for taking steps to enhance your knowledge through promoting STEM education. We look forward to collaborating with you. Please let us know any questions or to inquire about further engagement. Best, Camille Sloan Schroeder Programs Manager, Engineering Community Outreach Office Cell after hours

7 Attractions (Appendix C) Printing Policy Scanning Apps My State (ISU) App Internet (Appendix D) There are many events and entertainment options taking place throughout the Ames and Des Moines area. Please see Appendix C for more information. In an effort to limit excess paper waste and create a green training environment, only Master Teachers will have the ability to print. Every effort should be made to share information and documents electronically, if possible. Please utilize the mypltw, , flash drives, etc. If there is a document that must be printed, participants will use one of the following options, based on the Master Teacher s discretion: Save the document to a flash drive to give to Master Teacher the document to the Master Teacher as an attachment We thank you for your help in limiting excess paper waste and creating a green training environment. For all the participants that need to scan documents, scanning applications can be downloaded and used from your smartphone or tablet to scan all your documents as needed and as a pdf. For more information on individual apps, please visit your favorite application store. The Iowa State University application, My State, is a very helpful tool that can be used when spending time on campus. Included in the application is: a campus map that labels all building and streets, the CyRide Bus Route letting you know where each bus stop is and when the bus will come, and the Dining Centers/Cafes which will allow you to see what dining centers are open and the menus of the day. Available on Google Play and Apple Appstore free of charge. Participants will have access to wireless internet on campus including the classrooms. Please see Appendix D for directions on connecting to ISU s Internet Access.
8 Appendix A How To Use Iowa State University offers many options for public transportation for PLTW CTI participants. Each route is indicated by a color and operates a north and a south option at simultaneous times. Therefore, it is important to ensure you are at the correct bus stop, and you are boarding the correct bus. A CyRide map will be available upon request. There is also an option to download a CyRide application on your smart phone. Information regarding the CyRide app may also be found in this handbook. You ll notice that when you are on campus or in Ames, other routes are also operating; some on the same streets as the Blue and Brown routes. This highlights the importance of checking to ensure you are at the correct stop and boarding the correct bus. On the CyRide map, each route is represented by a line that is the same color as the name of the route (i.e., Brown route = brown line). Follow the color of line to view the streets that the route covers. The map also depicts dots along the road. These dots represent the stops that the bus will make. The dots on the east and north side of the road represent bus stops for the north option; the dots on the west and south side of the road represent bus stops for the south option. CyRide tickets are available upon request. Upon boarding the bus, hand one ticket to the driver. When you are ready to exit the bus, pull the cord along the bus wall to signal the driver to let you off at the next bus stop. If you are staying in East Ames, you can take advantage of CyRide s EASE (East Ames Service Extension) Service. The EASE service is a curb-to-curb, on-demand service operated by a small bus in East Ames. The service transports customers in the eastern zone to the south side of the Ames City Hall building, located at 515 Clark St., where transfers can be made to other CyRide bus routes. Customers may call CyRide's office ( ) to make a reservation. More information can also be found by visiting
