MESSAGE FROM THE ACVIM BOARD OF REGENTS PRESIDENT The ACVIM Board of Regents, committees and staff have had a productive year. I am pleased to share an overview of ACVIM s activities in this annual report. to view the ACVIM s Board of Regents Marketing and Communication Based on feedback from the 2013 Corona Insights survey, The Marketing and Communications Committee (MCC) focused their efforts in three main areas this year: an animal owner awareness campaign, a Diplomate marketing toolkit and sponsorship of local VMA speakers. No doubt you ve seen communications asking Diplomates to update their information in preparation for the new animal owner focused website and improved search for a specialist tool. And, hopefully, you ve seen some of the teaser messaging and are as excited as I am to see the unveiling of this new website and campaign in partnership with ACVS. You ll learn more if you re attending the 2015 Forum; if not, stay tuned for more information. Transition to JVIM Open Access In keeping with the President s role as the public face of the ACVIM, I have taken the lead in certain discussions with our international colleagues, particularly relating to the article publication charges (APC s) that resulted from the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine going to open access. I am currently working with Chair Virginia Buechner-Maxwell and JVIM Co-Editors Ken Hinchcliff and Steve DiBartola to determine the best utilization of funds allocated by the ACVIM Board of Regents to the three European specialty colleges to ease this transition. In addition, there is ongoing dialogue with the International Relations Committee on how that group can best serve the ACVIM and its international partners. Non-discrimination Policy and Statement of Inclusiveness Earlier this year, in the context of the Indiana religious freedom law, the ACVIM refined its non-discrimination policy and developed a statement of inclusiveness. Our goal was to develop a policy and statement that demonstrated acceptance and respect for all of our Diplomates, candidates and staff, as well as other individuals who interact with our organization. 4

Establishment of the Financial, Investment, and Audit Committee (FIAC) To better coordinate ACVIM financial matters, the Financial, Investment, and Audit committee (FIAC) was established in 2014 and the position of Treasurer was created and filled by Guy Pidgeon. With the advent of the FIAC, the President is no longer responsible for oversight of the financial and investment policies of the ACVIM. However, I have served as a liaison from the Board of Regents to this committee and have been involved in ongoing discussions. Finally, if you are attending the 2015 Forum, I hope you share my excitement about this year s program, which includes 19 State of the Art lectures, five consensus statement reports, nine One Medicine sessions and more than 300 research abstracts. The keynote address by Mr. Jim Wight, son of veterinarian, Mr. James Alf Wight (better known by his pseudonym, James Herriot), who authored All Creatures Great and Small and several other popular books, will provide interesting insight on the evolution of our profession. Lunch & Learn sessions will allow attendees to attend educational sessions without ever leaving the exhibit hall. And, we ll have the opportunity to meet Dora, one of the 2015 Animal Survivors. In closing, I would like to give a shout out to the Forum Planning Committee, this year s speakers, the ACVIM staff and all the volunteers involved in producing this premier event. We at ACVIM also appreciate the folks at VisitIndy who worked to ensure that every ACVIM attendee will be welcomed in Indianapolis. If you re not able to join us this year in Indianapolis, stay up to date on ACVIM s Facebook and Twitter pages. You ll also have a chance to see highlights of the Forum on the ACVIM website following the event. to view the 2014 Annual Membership Meeting Minutes Thank you for your membership in ACVIM and your leadership in veterinary specialty medicine. Joe N. Kornegay ACVIM Board of Regents President 5

MESSAGE FROM THE ACVIM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER to view the ACVIM Chief Executive Officer s Report I echo Dr. Kornegay s comments regarding ACVIM having a productive (and incredibly busy) year! In addition to the initiatives and accomplishments already cited, here s a brief list of other projects completed: Transition of the 2015 General Exam from pen and paper to ExamSoft computer-based administration, following several months of preparation, training, testing and communication. Job Task Analysis (JTA) information gathering and procedural development: A college-wide JTA initiative has been underway to ensure that all candidates receive a consistent, high quality experience in their residency training program. A JTA Task Force was formed in 2014 to gather information and guide development of procedures to facilitate the work of the specialty JTA Committees. The task force has completed their charge; work on the JTA specialty committees is underway. Restructure of leadership duties and volunteer management program to ensure continuity and expertise in all areas and enhance service and support to Diplomates and candidates. A comprehensive consulting engagement with Management Advisors, the firm retained by the ACVIM Board of Regents in 2010 to review the central office operations. This follow-up evaluation revealed that all of the issues identified in 2010 have been fully rectified; the consultants acknowledged the expertise, dedication, and positive attitude demonstrated by staff, and attributed many of our recent accomplishments to their efforts. I continue to be amazed by the skills and devotion of our many volunteers and small but mighty staff! Late last year, our central office team welcomed Andrea Miller, MPA as the new Foundation Director. Working with staff and volunteers for only seven months, Andrea has continued to strengthen the Foundation s financial position and program offerings. She brings great energy and limitless creativity to all that she touches. If you re attending Forum, you ll see new initiatives and exciting enhancements to the auction and Foundation Challenge programs. Stop by the Foundation booth and meet Andrea! Just four short weeks before Forum, Gena Erwin, CMP joined the ACVIM central office staff, replacing Mya Sadler as Director of Conferences, Partnerships and Publications. Gena gladly hit the ground running, working tirelessly from her first day to ensure that everything was ready for the 2015 ACVIM Forum. She brings over 15 years professional experience in meetings management to ACVIM. We are thrilled to have Gena on board! After nearly four years as ACVIM s Chief Executive Officer, I see no end to the challenges and opportunities. I appreciate the constant outpouring of guidance and assistance from staff, members and trusted partners. With our combined passion, drive, focus and support, we ll continue to produce amazing results! Respectfully, 6 Roberta G. Herman, MBA, CAE ACVIM Chief Executive Officer

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS The Marketing and Communications Committee (MCC) has been working on three initiatives to promote specialty veterinary medicine in general and developing tools to help members market themselves at the local level. Animal Owner Awareness in 2014 ACVIM and ACVS joined forces to create a campaign to raise awareness of specialty veterinary medicine. The campaign includes development of an animal owner focused website, improved search for a specialist tool and social media. A marketing and public relations campaign will promote the movement and get the word out. Diplomate Marketing Toolkit A toolkit for Diplomates is being developed which can be customized by individual or practices to best meet their marketing needs. to view the full MCC report Local VMA Sponsorship Program This program will allow The ACVIM to present information to primary care veterinarians in a consistent manner. By identifying Diplomates speakers in major markets, and providing messaging training and speaker sponsorship at local VMA CE sessions, this program will complement the other marketing initiatives. 11

ACVIM FOUNDATION The Foundation continues to make significant improvements in programming, communications and efficiencies to better serve its donors and stakeholders, including: 66 unique educational experiences for residents-in-training have been funded by The Foundation s Externship Program since to view the full Foundation Report Finishing the fiscal year in the black, exceeding net income projections, while holding expenses below budget.
