4 to know RECIIF works towards national and international cooperation Colombia is a country with high potential for research, innovation and technological development. The Software and Information Technology sector has been identified by the Colombian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism as one of the world-class sectors of Colombia and Mobile communications has been one of the most dynamic industries in recent years 1 in the country. On October 29th 2010, the Latin American Technology Platform RECIIF Red de colaboración para la I+D+i en Internet del Futuro was launched at the International ICT Congress ANDICOM 2010 in Colombia. RECIIF is an open community that gathers representatives from the Colombian Industry and Academia to encourage and promote a coherent approach to R&D&I activities on Future Internet. This community focuses on three topics that congregate in Colombia a significant mass for undertaking research: Mobile and wireless communications, Networked & Electronic Media and Software & Services. The intended scope of the RE- CIIF community is to provide a unified view and a shared strategic research agenda in the field of Future Internet, to ensure that RECIIF members have a svolid manner of interaction at national and international level and to act as a facilitator to establish complementary and cooperating R&D&I, therefore optimizing R&D&I efforts and providing Colombian know-how to the world. RECIIF s Steering Council is composed of large companies, SMEs and Universities of Colombia, such as UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones, Telefónica Telecom, Internexa, ETB, Avantel, Crearmedia, Multimedia services, Sytecno, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Universidad de Los Andes, Universidad Santo Tomas, Universidad Manuela Beltrán, Universidad San Buenaventura and the Universidad del Quindío. Also the Colombian Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation COLCIENCIAS and the National Academic Network of Advanced Technology RENATA, an advanced technology network that connects, communicates and fosters collaboration among the scientific and academic community in Colombia, participate as observersin the activities of Colombian Technology Platform. RECIIF has started its process toward identifying research priorities and cooperation opportunities in Future Internet. It is currently working in the definition of research topics in Mobile and Wireless Communications (Infrastructure, Applications and Business), Networked and Electronic Media (Creation of content and applications, Content presentation, Content management and Support Technologies) and Software and Services (advanced software engineering, frameworks for software developments, platforms for service delivery, cloud computing, Semantic Web, BPM, BI, as well as on the development of new services and applications, in particular SW for Health, security and mobile applications). RECIIF invites all R&D&I stakeholders (industry, academia, associations, etc.) of the Future Internet field in Colombia, willing to contribute to the activities of this community, to join the platform, free of charge. It also invites members of European Technology Platforms Net!Works, NESSI, NEM and international initiatives such as FIRE, FIA and FIF to contact and explore joint opportunities in forthcoming FP7 calls and therefore to create and maintain liaisons between Colombian, Latin American and Euro- 1 Cosette Castro. 5 pean organizations. RECIIF will continue its operations towards becoming, for the year 2012, the national meeting place par excellence of the Colombian Industry and Academia, the international reference point for the promotion and creation of R&D&i projects on Future Internet and a national reference point for the government that contribute to the development of ICT sector and society in the country, allowing Colombian R&D&I efforts to contribute to the goal that all Colombians access the virtual world anytime, anywhere and through any device. For more information about RECIIF, do not hesitate to contact FIRST local partner in Colombia, CINTEL at (+57) ext. 168 or mmontenegro@cintel.org.co Machi brings the Future Internet Perspective to Chile On December 1st, 2011, Chileans established Machi Future Internet, the first Chilean community that gathers representatives of Industry, Academia and Government aimed at identifying Chilean ICT priorities so as to strengthen R&D activities. Currently, Machi Leaders want to involve more Chileans and Europeans in this process. They sent the following letter to deliver this message: We invite all organizations established in Chile to participate in Machi Future Internet, the first Chilean community that gathers representatives of Industry, Academia and Government aimed at identifying Chilean ICT priorities so as to perform more R&D activities 1. Machi Future Internet is the network of stakeholders of industry, academia and government that will foster R&D activities in ICT field with Europe. Since this is an open and free community all interested stakeholders can participate. For Chile, this is a huge challenge. Thanks to FIRST, the academia and industry sectors are starting to get to know one other with the future aim of making joint projects. Additionally, the industry starts to be aware of the funding opportunities that the Framework Programmes offer, besides the fact that this community is a door to internationalization. 1 Machi was born within the frame of the FIRST project, funded by the European Commission (FP7), also taking place in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. 5

6 to know consequently, with Machi Future Internet aims. Artemis Chile Leader For academia, it is an opportunity to start a networking relation with the industry and government. Machi is made of Working Groups that mirror European Technology Platforms; we are starting to define the list of R&D priorities in which Chile can make a difference. This would be an excellent cornerstone to start a strong cooperation with European Union in the Frameworks Programme. We would like to underscore that this is an open call process, hence, every interested entity can participate. The result of this will be the Strategic Research Agenda document for Chile. On a political level, the implementation of Machi is especially meaningful since Chile will be the next host of EU-LAC Summit to be held in 2012, announced by president Piñera last year during the EU-LAC Summit, held in Madrid. One of the strongest points of EU- LAC was the confirmation of the key role played by science, technology and innovation for achieving sustainable development and social inclusion, as well as mutual benefits through cooperation in capacity building, research programs, and technology transfer activities. This is a fact of major importance since this goal is in line with the FIRST project and, EPoSS Chile Leader Hector Torres NESSI Chile Leaders Pablo Caroca Mario Andres Bruno Emobility Chile Leader Secretariat Gerardo Rivas Hugo Durney ALETI Participate in MACHI Internet del Futuro - CHILE Group at Linkedin! 6

7 PLATA Future Internet is born in Argentina It is a pleasure to announce that Argentina has implemented a Future Internet Technology Platform for fostering R&D activities. Its name is PLATA, the acronym for Plataforma Tecnológica Argentina and also the name of the most famous river in Argentina, called Rio de la Plata (literally, Silver River). The leaders of PLATA want to involve Argentinean and European R&D stakeholders; FIRST to Know has the honor to share their message to all our readers: We are very excited with this excellent news for many reasons. Firstly, we are dealing with new concepts: Future Internet & Technology Platform. Future Internet as a whole field of knowledge is more familiar to Academia, but not for Industry, therefore it is very positive for the Industry to start thinking about these topics. Argentina does already have something similar to Technology Platform as a tool for enhancing the relation between Academia, Industry and Government, but it used to work in a different way. Secondly, PLATA has Working Groups that are a mirror to the European counterparts NESSI, NEM, EPoSS, Net!works, ENIAC, etc. Therefore we are trying to network and share experiences with them. Thirdly, PLATA is being supported by the National Ministry of Science and Technology, which makes it a renowned Technology Platform. Consequently, we expect that PLATA will have continuity when the FIRST project finishes. To end, we would like to remark the following messages: For Argentineans: PLATA is a door to increasing competitiveness in the region and to foster Internationalization. We want to point out that participating in PLATA is free and open to all sectors (industry, academia, associations, etc.) interested in innovation and R&D. For Europeans: we are very glad to have a mirror organization to ETPs and we expect to meet you soon in order to exchange ideas about our Working Groups, your Platforms and your experience. Sincerely, PLATA Integrated & Embedded Systems Leader Javier Orozco PLATA ICT Components Leader PLATA Daniel Lupi PLATA NUEVONET Leader Gabriel Baum PLATA NUEVONET Leader Secretariat José María Louzao ALETI 7
