Page f4 Leadership Alamance New Track Spurs Economic Development Representatives of the team behind bringing rail spur to Cambro pose in front of first rail car. The Leadership Alamance Class of 2017 is half way through the program year! Page F4 Ribbon Cuttings Page F5 On a cold and blustery day in Mid- December, a crowd gathered under a tent outside of the Cambro Manufacturing Plant in Mebane, to celebrate a unique development - the completion of a lead track off the main rail line into the NCIC business park and the first railcar delivery of raw material to the Cambro plant. As speaker after speaker described, this track will open the North Carolina Industrial Center to a broader range of industries who, like Cambro, need rail as an option to transport inbound and/or outbound freight. For some commodities and products, transport by rail can offer cost savings when compared to trucking. Having transport options also gives companies flexibility in scheduling when and how inbound and outbound freight moves to and from their facilities. In addition to serving Cambro, the lead track can be extended further into the park creating more rail served sites for other potential industries. Good rail sites are difficult to find and can be difficult to create said Mac Williams, Alamance Chamber President. It took significant time and money as well as coordination with multiple agencies to get this infrastructure in the ground to this point. Extension to other sites is now more reasonable to do, he said. About The Chamber The Alamance Chamber is a membership-based, volunteer-led, nonprofit community and economic development organization. 2 F2 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017 Letter from the president FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017 As 2017 gets underway, a major initiative for the Chamber is already well underway - that of funding our local economic development program. The Chamber serves as the primary agent for economic development recruiting for the county. Funding for this service comes from both public and private sector sources in a public-private partnership that has been working successfully for the last dozen years. The private funding side is done under the auspices of the Alamance County Economic Development Foundation which is housed, staffed, and managed out of the Chamber. To generate the funding, the Foundation does a major fundraising campaign every five years. A successful campaign was completed in the fall of 2011 resulting in pledges from local businesses in the amount of $1.7 million to provide resources for the program from January 2012 through December Program goals for the five years were set at creating 1500 primary new jobs and attracting $250 million in new capital investment. Given conditions in the overall economy in the fall of 2011, those goals seemed aggressive and pledging five years of financial support in an uncertain economy was a major commitment. Yet, the thinking was, if we don t invest in ourselves, why would anyone else invest in us? Well, five years later, we invested and others followed. Over 30 new and Mac Williams Chamber President existing industry projects occurred between January 2012 and December 2016 announcing over 2000 new jobs and over $560 million in capital investment! Major new projects included Sheetz, Walmart, Lidl, Lotus Bakery, and Cambro while existing companies such as GKN, Nypro, Honda Aero, and Glen Raven announced expansions. Now, in 2017 and with much better economic conditions, we are looking forward to the next five years. New program goals have been determined and another aggressive campaign goal set. The fundraising is underway and we will have an update at the Foundation Investor event coming up in February. Economic development is a team sport. The public-private partnership is providing the blocking and tackling needed to be an effective team Board of Directors & Officers Paul Koonts Chair Oertel, Koonts & Oertel PLLC Lori Seiler Past Chair Seiler Services, Inc.
