1 Buildings and Places on the UNCG Campus: An Archival Research Guide The main dormitory of the State Normal and Industrial College was burned this morning about four o clock. No student was injured in any way though a number of them lost their trunks and all of their clothing. The citizens of Greensboro have opened their homes to the students, and comfortable temporary arrangements have been made. There will be no suspension of the college. President Charles D. McIver, January 21, 1904 OVERVIEW The University Archives and Manuscripts department at UNCG serves as the primary resource for information related to the history and construction of buildings and places on the UNCG campus. In 1892, when the school first opened as the State Normal and Industrial School, there were only four buildings: the Main Building (later called Administration Building and then officially named in honor of Dr. Julius I. Foust in 1960), Brick Dormitory, Wooden Dormitory, and the McIver House. Over the last century, the campus has grown extensively to now include over 80 different types of buildings. The following is an attempt to aid researchers in learning about the rich history of the various buildings and places on the UNCG campus by providing a selected list of available resources in the Archives. ARCHIVAL RESOURCES Individual Collections Chancellors Papers: McIver, Charles Duncan University Archives, UA 2.1 The records of President Charles D. McIver contain letters and correspondence related to the construction of the first buildings on campus (Box 1) as well as materials related to the 1904 fire that destroyed the Brick Dormitory (Box 28).
