NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE The annual National Leadership Conference (NLC) brings together thousands of future health professionals from across the country. This conference features: Exciting general sessions; Educational and social learning activities; Leadership academies; Tours to healthcare facilities; Exhibits presented by professional healthcare associations; The National Competitive Events program; The annual business of the national student organization of HOSA by the national voting delegates; The Educational Symposium workshops presented by professional partners that provide information about current health care issues; Opportunities to meet people from across the United States and Puerto Rico with similar career goals; Fun, excitement, recognition, and opportunity for HOSA members! Eligibility All members registered by the Cal-HOSA NLC deadline are eligible to attend NLC. For competitive events, Cal-HOSA may send the top three competitors/teams in each event to compete at NLC. To be eligible to compete, chapters must complete every step in the registration process including the Intent to Compete form and online conference registration. NLC Registration Process National HOSA provides registration information and deadlines however, it is important to adhere to Cal-HOSA s process and deadlines in order to be eligible to attend. Chapters are responsible for registering students for events and confirming chapter details. Registration must be completed by the Cal-HOSA deadline as a validation process takes place immediately after the deadline. State Winners List Following the State Leadership Conference, Cal-HOSA publishes the winners list. The top three individuals or teams in each event are eligible to compete at Nationals. However, if a competitor decides not to attend NLC, Cal-HOSA will select the next eligible competitor to attend. This means that members placing fourth or fifth may still have the opportunity to compete at nationals. 29

Intent to Compete Competitors from each event who received first, second, third, fourth, or fifth place should have an Intent to Compete form completed, even if the competitor(s) may not attend NLC. This form serves as official notification to Cal-HOSA regarding a competitor s intent to compete at the NLC. This form is important because it assists Cal-HOSA in establishing the final list of competitors and ensures that Cal-HOSA will be fully represented in all competitive events. Any forms not received by the Intent to Compete deadline will be assumed as No, I will not be able to participate... response. Intent to Compete Form Submission Deadline: April 15, 2015 NLC Competitor Notification All Intent to Compete forms will be processed and chapters notified with a final NLC Competitor List. NLC Competitor Notification Release Date: April 22, 2015 NLC Registration Payment Registration payments must be mailed to Cal-HOSA. Please make checks payable to Cal-HOSA, Inc. and mail check to: Cal-HOSA Headquarters P.O. Box Bakersfield, CA DO NOT MAIL YOUR PAYMENT TO NATIONAL HOSA. 30

STATE OFFICER GOALS Membership The Cal-HOSA State Officer team aims to expand membership all across California. Objectives: Increase overall membership by 10% Establish JUMP, secondary, and postsecondary chapters Assist new and existing chapters with activities resources and motivation strategies Membership Engagement Membership engagement is an important priority for this year. The State Officer team believes that the strength of Cal-HOSA membership is directly impacted by membership involvement. Objectives: Create a Chapter Toolkit State Officer led workshops at Regional Leadership Conferences (RLC) 31

Objectives: Meet with California Legislators to promote California HOSA at the Washington Leadership Academy Provide resources to local chapters to use and to also engage in advocacy efforts Promote and raise awareness of HOSA to industry partners and to the community Communications Communication is the key to a unified state membership. 33 RUNNING FOR HOSA STATE OFFICE Become a Chapter, State, or National Leader of HOSA If your dream is to be a future health professional, community leader, or public servant then getting involved in the HOSA Officer Leadership Program is for you. Get started at the local level as a chapter officer or a committee member. Take the extra step to become a state officer or even a national officer. As an officer you will receive training, plan incredible projects, meet with civic and industry leaders, lead service projects, design public relations and communication efforts, and assist in planning leadership conferences. Anyone willing to make this kind of commitment and has the drive to succeed, and dedication to get the job done should seriously consider running for state office. If considering, it is recommended that members consult with their local advisor to obtain their opinion and their advice. Those who decide to run for office can be assured that holding state office will be one of the most memorable experiences of their life as well as one of the most effective career preparation experiences they could ever have while in high school. National Officer Selection Process Members wishing to take their HOSA involvement to the highest level can serve on the National Executive Council. National officers are the ambassadors of HOSA and represent the 150,000+ HOSA members. Any Cal-HOSA member interested in running for national office must first follow the process of running for the state office. If successfully elected to the state office, the State Advisor will interview the candidate and then have the option of endorsing them to run for national office. STATE OFFICER PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES Chapter Visits The state officers may be available to visit your local chapter. Having a state officer visit a local chapter connects that state officer with local members all the while giving the state officer an opportunity to promote state and national conferences, programs, and initiatives. State officers can discuss a particular event, explain HOSA to a new chapter or class, and encourage students to get involved. Oftentimes chapters can connect with a state officer s passion, excitement, and commitment to HOSA and use it to foster those same feelings at the local level. To request a visit, your request to headquarters.calhosa@gmail.com. 33

NATIONAL PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES HOSA Internship in the Office of the U. S. Surgeon General The HOSA Internship in the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General is available to HOSA members and advisors who want an opportunity to interact with leading professionals within the Office of the Surgeon General (OSG) and the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS CC). For a short period of time, interns are able to experience first-hand the mission of the OSG and Office responsibilities carried out by USPHS CC s who are set out to protect and promote a healthy nation. HOSA Interns will shadow OSG staff and take on a project that directly benefits the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HOSA seeks to provide its members with an experience that exposes them to the many career paths and opportunities found within HHS, OSG, USPHS CC. Interns will also gain high level exposure by observing the role the government has in formulating and delivering federal policy. The next round of internships will occur in summer of Visit for more information. HOSA E-Magazine The HOSA E-Magazine is the official publication of National HOSA for its members, advisors, partners and supporters. The E-Magazine includes articles and information on chapter spotlights, alumni success stories, HOSA partners, healthcare related news, HOSA conferences, events, and opportunities, and more. Many of the articles are written by individual members and every chapter is encouraged to write and submit an article. The E-Magazine is published three times a year and articles can be sent to hosa@hosa.org at any time for inclusion in the next issue. Visit and select E-Magazine from the Resources tab to view the latest E-Magazine. 34
