2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Fostering appreciation and understanding of horticulture, design and the environment by providing opportunities for learning and sharing. Background In 1953, the founding thirty members, of the Naples Garden Club (NGC) came together for their first meeting. Naples was a community of only 2000 people. The garden club focused its efforts on educating members in horticulture, conservation and raising funds to help beautify the growing community. NGC participated in the rapid changes of Southwest Florida during those early years. Its first charitable endeavors were plantings at the Naples Community Hospital, the new high school on Third Street (current Gulf Coast Middle School) and the new entrance to Everglades National Park. Two major events, the Flower Show and House & Garden Tour, started in tandem in the spring of Eventually separated, the now Naples Flower Show has continued to be a major focus of the Club s educational public programming and the House & Garden Tour has become the major fundraiser. Over decades NGC has funded beautification efforts at public and non-profit institutions in Naples, including many public schools, Big Cypress (Conservancy of Southwest Florida), City of Naples, George Washington Carver Housing Project, Naples Deport, Palm Cottage, Philharmonic (Artis-Naples) and Rookery Bay. Civic contributions have totaled close to one million dollars over the years. In 1978 NGC moved into new headquarters at the Naples Depot. Horticulture and design classes, monthly meetings and the flower show were held there until 2005 when it opened the current headquarters at Naples Botanical Garden (NBG). Over the years, NGC and NBG have developed collaborative programs ranging from shared speakers to joint workshops to partnering to produce the Naples Flower Show. CEO/Executive Director Statement Since 1953, over a thousand members of NGC have connected with other members from all over the world who share interests in horticulture, floral design and the environment. A decade older than the Naples Historical Society, we provided funding for the first city street medians and the Caribbean Gardens, among other milestones. For sixty years, our sold out House & Garden Tour has been a highlight of the Season while raising nearly one million dollars for scholarships and community projects and rewarding sponsors with exposure to a focused audience. Funded with a $100,000 commitment from our members, our endowment provides financial assistance to students conducting research in plant sciences at the NBG/FGCU s Kapnick Education and Research Center. Partnering with Naples Botanical Garden, we present the largest juried flower show in SWFL, attracting more than 5,000 attendees and bringing recognition for excellence from state and national garden clubs. In 2010, we funded the Idea Garden at Naples Botanical Garden to expose a wider public to practical ideas for sustainable gardening. 4 Workshops and Trips Description Long-Term Success Examples of Long-Term Success Target Population 1 Target Population 2 Educational workshops offer NGC members the opportunity to have a hands-on, in-depth experience to learn more about floral design, horticulture. the environment, and Flower Show preparation. Daylong trips to private gardens, botanical gardens and nurseries offer ideas, inspiration and appreciation of the environment. Demand for hands-on workshops has precipitated presenting double workshops on the same topic. Increased number of new members, who attended workshops, entered designs in the Naples Flower Show. Larger number of Provisional Members entered the Horticulture Division after learning how to prepare plants and horticulture cards. Scholarships and Grants Program Description Long-Term Success Examples of Long-Term Success Target Population 1 Target Population 2 Naples Garden Club has made generous contributions to the community over the years. The Community Grants Program has funded plantings ranging from medians to youth gardens to major institutions in Collier County. The Scholarship Program has supported numerous local students in their pursuit of undergraduate/graduate degrees and research in horticulture and/or the environment and related fields that support NGC s mission. Funded with a $100,000 commitment from our members, NGC s endowment was established at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) to provide financial assistance to students conducting research in plant sciences at NBG/FGCU Kapnick Education and Research Center. A formal online community grant application was established and a Grants Committee was created under the Development Committee. FGCU Endowed Fellow is working on a research project at Naples Botanical Garden. Idea Garden at Naples Botanical Garden, funded by NGC in 2010, opens eyes to new ways of enjoying sustainable gardening techniques in Southwest Florida. 4
5 Impact Goals What are your organization's long-term strategic goals? Strengthen member s interaction and participation in allaspects of the Club. Expand existing Development program through communityout reach and strengthen marketing capabilities to achieve higher visibility and awareness in the community. Maintain and strengthen Board leadership by employing best practices. Increase number of talented, community oriented and versatile members. Strategies What are the major strategies you will do to accomplish your goals? Use round tables (8-10 members/table) at General Membership Meetings to encourage members to sit at randomly drawn numbered tables to interact with members. Experiment with morning meetings, serving refreshments before the meeting, to create a relaxed atmosphere during business meetings and program presentation. Recruit talented NGC members for Program Speakers and demonstrations to encourage members with expertise to participate. Explore ways to increase awareness within the non-profit community of NGC s Grant Program by requesting Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC) contact appropriate nonprofits to encourage them to apply. Identify best resources to conduct Board Best Practices training, New Board Orientation, and an all-day Board Retreat that includes a Board Best Practices segment and a How To Identify and Mentor Your Successor segment. Maintain Member Skill and Experience Profile containing education, experience and current and past community involvement; produce exciting, interesting and educational Programs, Workshops and Field Trips in conjunction with Naples Botanical Garden and the Naples community; survey individual members about goals accomplished during the year to encourage participation and record findings. Capabilities What are your organization s capabilities for doing this? Available furniture, equipment, signage, venue and food service. Many NGC members are Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Flower Show Judges with vast experience teaching and presenting Programs throughout Florida. CFCC willing to send announcement to nonprofits in the community announcing the NGC Grant process. Current and past NGC Board members have expertise to conduct Board Orientation, Board Retreat, and Board Training; a Board Handbook is available online; knowledge exists of contract community resources, who can supply needed Board training. A detailed online Members Skills and Experience Profile exists and is accessible to members. MOU s between NGC and NBG reinforce producing and evaluating collaborative program efforts. Indicators What indicators do you use to measure progress? Number of members attending GM meetings, programs and workshops and continued interest of talented members to present workshops and programs. Tracking the number of community organizations submitting grant applications. Board Self-Evaluation, evaluation of the Full Board, observation of individual Board member behavior and number of members who are willing to take leadership positions on the Board when asked. Track members participation in workshops, General Membership Meetings, trips and involvement in joint efforts with Naples Botanical Garden using evaluation forms, number of membership applications, and members feedback through surveys and suggestion box. Progress What have and haven t you accomplished so far? Development of a more in-depth Skills and Experience Profile enabling NGC s Board to locate and analyze 5
6 potential future leaders. Having over and average of 100 members attend each General Membership Meeting. A plan to develop future leaders. An effective strategic marketing plan in a competitive area with many non-profit organizations competing for publicity. 6
