2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Tech For Troops is dedicated to empowering veterans with computers, skills, and Information Technology (IT) work force training. T4TP provides refurbished computers to veterans, enabling them to connect with employers and develop essential computer skills. We hire veterans and provide technical training, keep usable computers out of the landfill, and recycle electronics in an environmentally sustainable way. Background Tech For Troops Project was founded in 2013 by Laurie Phillips and her son Chris. Chris had high school friends who had enlisted in the military after high school, and they couldn t find jobs after returning from Afghanistan. They had no way to afford a computer necessary to apply for their military benefits, write a resume and apply for jobs. Chris wanted to help his friends, and he and Laurie began collecting used computers from friends and business contacts, refurbishing the computers in their garage, and donating them to veterans. Any unusable donation was recycled. In the first six months they gave computers to veterans training centers, outfitted a PTSD counseling center with laptops to let their veterans find quiet spots to work, put computers in every bedroom of a house for homeless female veterans who have children, and equipped the Freedom Support Center in Petersburg, VA, where veterans can get all services under one roof. Later they set up partnerships with Team Red White & Blue and the American Legion Ransom Post to distribute PCs to individual veterans. They funded the business through revenue from their programs: recycling scrap and selling unusable computers and parts. What began as a endeavour to help friends has become a source of technology, computer training and jobs for veterans, fueled by donations of high-quality corporate PCs and a growing revenue stream from programs, resulting in recognition across the nation. 3 Needs 1. Financial Donations: Computers are often missing parts and we have to buy replacement parts. We also need to pay for professional management, veteran employee salaries and physical improvements to our work and training space. Related costs are estimated at: $140, Additional Locations. We need financial and logistical support to allow us to provide services in cities where there are high numbers of veterans in need. Our model calls for local donors and volunteers to serve local veterans. With the appropriate support, we will be able to expand to at least six major cities that are hotspots for veteran poverty. 3. Community Engagement. We need community involvement to thrive and grow. Community service volunteers enable us to do more with less and create a fun atmosphere that engages our veterans and volunteers with corporate employees. We are looking for key volunteers and funding to support large community service events. The more funding we can obtain to cover our costs associated with hosting service events, the more we can engage the community. 4. Program Enhancement. We want to expand our classroom training program that will give veterans both a computer and information technology skills that are in demand by employers. Related costs are estimated at $101,000. 4 Programs Programs Computers for Vets Description T4TP collects used computers and related equipment, refurbishes them and donates them to veterans in need. Usable equipment that doesn't meet our standards for donation is sold for reuse. Budget $1,000, Strategy Yes Training for Vets Description T4TP provides on-the-job and classroom training for veterans, giving them the job skills and connections they'll need to secure high-tech jobs. There is no charge to veterans for training. In fact, T4TP pays vets while they are learning. With more than 17 years of experience spearheading multi-million dollar initiatives, managing technical teams, and building strong relationships, Mark's career has included management positions at Capital One and Northrop Grumman. In addition to holding a B.S. in Marketing from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University, Mark is ITIL certified and a certified Scrum Master. He was a Board member of Liberation Family Services and a volunteer at Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center, an organization that provides year-round therapeutic horseback riding exclusively for veterans with special needs and disabilities. 8 T4TP's corporate partner, Performance Food Group, generously donates all of their computers to our organization. Corporate donors such as AMF and SyCom not only donate computers, but are also enthusiastic about hiring veterans and are organized to recruit them. The U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Transition, Employment, and Economic Impact exists to help veterans achieve long-term economic success, and lists T4TP among employers who train and hire veterans. We propose trained veterans to MaxxPotential, a B Corporation and IT contracting firm who has had great success placing large numbers of newly trained, inexperienced IT professionals in high-tech jobs, exactly like the veterans we serve. And finally, T4TP collaborates with various organizations who aid in the distribution of computers to qualified veterans, including River City Comprehensive Counseling Services, Veterans Employment Program, DLW Veterans Outreach and Training Center, Freedom Support Center, Veterans Strong Outreach, Marines Helping Marines, Association for Wounded Veterans, Pathways to Success, Home Again, Liberation Family Services, McGuire VA Medical Center, American Legion Ransome Post 186, Team Red White & Blue, and REACHcycles.
