1 TE MATA IRA MASTERS SCHOLARSHIP PURPOSE Te Kotahi Research Institute is leading a multidisciplinary research project to determine the ethical, cultural, scientific policies and practices that are necessary to protect Māori interests in biobanking and genomic research. The research project will identify Māori views on biobanking and genomic research through interviews, workshops and interdisciplinary panels with Māori and Indigenous communities (iwi, rangatahi, researchers) and biobanking/genomic research communities. This will allow identification of strategic issues from which to construct culturally informed ethical guidelines for research in the areas of biobanking and genomic research. REGULATIONS 1. This Scholarship shall be known as the Te Mata Ira Masters Scholarship. 2. In order to be eligible for a Te Mata Ira Masters Scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in fulltime study at the University of Waikato in the year of tenure, 3. Recipients will be chosen by the Selection Panel on the basis of academic merit, an interest in Māori and indigenous research and ethics, and / or the interface between Mātauranga Māori and Science, and looking to develop a career in research. Preference will be given to students with an interest in evaluation, demographics and/or policy development. 4. One award will be offered with a value of up to $15, The Award will be paid to recipients in quarterly instalments, with the final payment conditional upon receipt of a brief report from the supervisor confirming satisfactory progress. 6. Awards may be used for the payment of enrolment fees at the University of Waikato along with supporting the recipients in meeting the costs associated with their study e.g. study materials, living costs and conference and workshop attendance. 7. Successful applicants who have received, or are receiving, funding from other University of Waikato scholarships may be limited to an overall total of funding from any/all such scholarships. Any such decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. 8. The Selection Panel for the Award comprises of a member of the research team and a member of the Te Kotahi Research Institute. 9. If the Selection Panel is not satisfied that the holder is following the appropriate academic programme of study and making satisfactory progress, the Scholarships Committee may terminate the Award at any time and recoup any funds already disbursed. 10. There is no set closing date. The application will remain open until a suitable applicant is approved by the Selection Panel.

The Scholarships Committee may terminate my Award at any time, and recoup any funds awarded, if it is not satisfied that I am following the required programme or that I am otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Award. 4.
