2 This year, the Foundation is offering the following scholarships: 6 x Alzheimer s Australia Dementia Research Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships in dementia research ($30,000 per year for three years) 1 x Alzheimer s Australia Dementia Research Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in Dementia Specific Respite Research (valued at $30,000 per year for three years) 6 x Top-up Scholarships (valued at up to $7,500 per year for two years) This document contains important information for applicants regarding the application procedure and eligibility conditions for the Alzheimer s Australia Dementia Grants Program. Applicants should read all of the information included in this document and liaise with their host Institution s Research Office before contacting the Foundation with any queries regarding the application process or eligibly conditions. 3 These PhD Scholarships are offered to students undertaking a research PhD in an area relevant to an aspect of dementia and will be awarded for three years, with a value of $30,000 per annum. To be eligible for a PhD Scholarship award the applicant must: Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or a New Zealand citizen living in Australia. Applicants who have been resident in Australia for at least two years and have evidence of eligibility and application for permanent residency may also be eligible for Postgraduate Research Scholarships in Dementia Enrol in a full-time or part-time PhD research degree at an Australian university or show that they have made arrangements to undertake a full-time or part-time PhD in research at an Australian university. Have written agreement of a qualified supervisor and the support of an Australian university to carry out the proposed project. The research proposal must relate to an aspect of dementia 3

4 One Scholarship has been dedicated to fund research within a nominated priority area as directed by the Consumer Dementia Research Network (CDRN). This Scholarship will be awarded in the clinical/psychosocial research area only. In 2013, the nominated priority area is "Dementia specific respite including the needs of people living with dementia from diverse groups" To be eligible for this award the applicant must: Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or a New Zealand citizen living in Australia. Applicants who have been resident in Australia for at least two years and have evidence of eligibility and application for permanent residency may also be eligible for a Postgraduate Scholarship in Younger Onset Dementia research. Enrol in a full-time or part-time PhD research degree at an Australian university or show that they have made arrangements to undertake a full-time or part-time PhD in research at an Australian university. Have written agreement of a qualified supervisor and the support of an Australian university to carry out the proposed project. The research proposal must relate specifically to an aspect of dementia specific respite. 4

5 Top up Scholarships will provide an additional $7,500 per annum for a maximum of two years to recipients of Postgraduate Scholarships in dementia research who are commencing their studies, or who are in the first or second years of a full-time PhD. To be eligible for Top-up Scholarships applicants must be: Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or a New Zealand citizen living in Australia. Applicants who have been resident in Australia for at least two years and have evidence of eligibility and application for permanent residency may also be eligible for a Top-up Scholarship Enrolled in a full-time PhD degree at an Australian university or show that they have made arrangements to undertake a full-time PhD at an Australian university. Be in receipt of a PhD Scholarship from a funding body other than Alzheimer s Australia Dementia Research Foundation 5

6 Applications open Monday September 2 and close Friday October To apply please go to: To complete the application you must provide: Evidence of citizenship or permanent residency* An academic transcript An up to date curriculum vitae A five page research proposal A 250 word lay summary of your work A signed approval letter (supplied in this document) All applications in this round will be evaluated according to the following criteria: The quality of the academic record and potential of the applicant The relevance of the project to research in dementia The suitability of intended/current supervisors and institution The significance, feasibility and merit of the research proposal The final decision on successful applicants will be made by the Scientific and Medical Panel and the Board of Alzheimer s Australia Dementia Research Foundation. *Please provide a scanned copy of your passport or birth certificate if you are a citizen of Australia or New Zealand. If you are a New Zealand citizen please also provide evidence of Australian residence (i.e. letter addressed you at an Australian address such as a bank statement). If you are a permanent resident or have applied to be, please attach scanned evidence of your permanent residency, or your application for residency. 6

7 You must write a research proposal. Within the application form you are also expected to include a 200 word abstract for your proposal and a 250 lay summary of your research. If you are applying for the Dementia Specific Respite Scholarship you must also explain how your research meets this area, and how you will communicate your research. The research proposal itself should not exceed 5 pages, including references, with a minimum font size of 12. Please do not exceed 20 references. Any additional pages will not be forwarded for assessment. Explanatory appendices are not permissible. You are permitted to include figures and tables. Descriptions for figures may be in size 10 font. The research proposal should include the following sections: Aims - List specific aims and potential significance of the project. Clearly state the research question and hypothesis to be tested, as well as rationale and objectives. Background - Summarise both previous work from your host department in this field, and work reported by others, which provides the basis for the proposed research project. Research Strategy - Include a clear description of methods and design, including research strategy. References - Please list all references quoted in this application. Maximum of 20 references.
