3 CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE 2017 is the eighth year of MyKasih Foundation s existence. We could not have reached out and delivered aid to 230,000 families all over the country if it was not for CHAIRMAN S and community partners. MESSAGE the support received from you our donors Dear Friends, T he donations MyKasih receives help families with basic needs such as food and educational support for children as well as skills training and job placements. This is especially critical, with the rise in the cost of living. Children living in poverty remain a significant target group to be assisted. Since the MyKasih Love My School student bursary programme kicked-off in 2012, more than 11,000 primary and secondary school children have been nourished and given the learning materials they need to be able to participate fully in school. We are grateful to our donors, like Cenviro Group, ConocoPhillips Malaysia, and Kajang Rocks Group, for their continuing efforts in reaching out to feed financially-strained families and educate children through the bursary scheme. I would also like to thank the Rotarians for continuing their collaboration with us through the Rotary Kasih programme to provide bursaries and educational support to underprivileged children. In this issue, we highlight the results of our tenth empowerment and entrepreneurship income-generation programme for a community of MyKasih food aid recipients in Carey Island, Selangor. I would like to thank HSBC Bank Malaysia for partnering MyKasih since 2010, supporting programmes aimed at empowering aid recipients to achieve financial independence through entrepreneurship. My wife and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and encouragement which you have given us to carry on with these charitable efforts. On that note, the Foundation will be hosting its seventh charity golf tournament on 30 September We successfully raised RM 907,000 last year and we hope supporters will donate generously once again in support of the work that we do. We remain steadfast in our mission to create loving and caring neighbourhoods. We look forward to strengthened partnerships for many more years to come. 4 Overview of MyKasih Revolutionising charity through a systemised welfare management solution using MyKad Established in April 2009, MyKasih Foundation is a charity organisation founded by Dialog Group s Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Ngau Boon Keat and his wife Puan Sri Jean Ngau, to help low-income families through food aid and education regardless of race, religion or descent. The uniqueness of the MyKasih programme compared to other non-profit organisations doing food aid is in the former s technological edge in driving welfare distribution. The MyKasih Love My Neighbourhood food aid programme and the MyKasih Love My School student bursary scheme run on an efficient cashless payment system developed by epetrol Services Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Dialog Group Berhad. The system uses the chip technology of the Malaysian identity card, the MyKad, to disburse welfare aid to target beneficiaries. How MyKasih Works 1 Donation 7 Settlement & Payment 6 RM 2 Consumption Report 4 RM 5 Purchase selected food items using MyKad 3 Database 1 Donors or welfare agencies select preferred locations to adopt families under the MyKasih Love My Neighbourhood food aid programme for a minimum of one year. 5 Recipients shop for essential goods from ten different product categories such as rice, noodles, bread, biscuits, eggs, seasoning, flour, cooking oil, canned food and beverages Welfare agencies and/or non-governmental organisations help identify and select needy families based on criteria to assess the eligibility of potential recipients, such as monthly combined household income, number of household members, age, etc. Application Forms for potential beneficiaries are submitted to MyKasih Foundation for Donor s approval. Details of approved applications are keyed into the MyKasih Online Portal, where each family is required to nominate a recipient. RM 40 is deposited into the recipient s MyKad account twice a month. 6 7 Recipients use their MyKad to pay with a limit of RM 80 a month. To guard against abuse, a unique bar-code scanning process at the point-of-sale ensures that only approved selected basic food items are purchased. To activate the payment transaction using the MyKad, recipients are required to key in a personalised 6-digit PIN. Upon a successful transaction, a receipt is generated which informs the recipient of his/her available balance for the next purchase. epetrol then administers the payments and sales reconciliation between MyKasih Foundation and the participating retail partner. 4 MyKasih News Issue #19

MyKasih believes that if the families basic needs can be met, the children can complete proper education and hence have the opportunity of stepping out of poverty through better job employment. MyKasih relies entirely on donations from the public and corporate bodies, which are tax exempted, to help fund the above welfare programmes for the underprivileged. 8 Love My Neighbourhood Food Aid Programme Food aid is the first step taken to engage with our targeted communities. Based on the needs and readiness of the community, the food aid is often followed by the Love My School bursary programme and other empowerment programmes. MyKasih Foundation does not give out assistance to the low-income households on an ad-hoc basis. Instead, we make a long-term commitment to empower the people we help. Food aid recipients receive a bimonthly allowance which they draw upon using their MyKad or MyKasih smartcard at participating retail outlets. They are able to choose different brands of essential food items from an approved list of ten product categories. To guard against abuse, a unique barcode-scanning process at the point-of-sale ensures that only approved items are purchased. Recipients key in their 6-digit PIN when paying with their MyKad or MyKasih Smartcard. 10DIFFERENT PRODUCT CATEGORIES MyKasih food aid recipients are from lowincome households earning a combined monthly household income of RM 1,500 and below. The floods have caused a lot of disruption and inconvenience to many rural communities. We have recorded 112 schools that were affected, impacting about 10,000 students. And these students really suffer, revealed YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah during a press conference held in Kuching on 30 March Organizers of the tournament will be working with MyKasih Foundation to receive donations and distribute them to targeted schools and students affected by the floods. News of damage caused by the floods greatly alarmed us. Impoverished communities in rural Malaysia are the worst hit during such disasters. We need to come together during times of need to ensure that the children s education is not disrupted, said MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat. We are deeply honoured to work together with the state of Sarawak and supporting partners for this cause. We are humbled to be able to play our role in the cashless disbursement of funds to support rural school children during such difficult times. MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat. Corporations pitch in to realise the target of RM 1 million for the Sarawak Rural Kids Education Scheme. 22 Love My School Fundraising Launches Let s talk about Orang Asli and education Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat explains why we are putting Orang Asli s education at the forefront, and why you should too. MyKasih Co-Founder Puan Sri Jean Ngau with the Primary Year 1 students of SK (Asli) Bukit Lanjan in Damansara Perdana, Selangor. The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members. F rom Mahatma Gandhi to Bernie Sanders, our greatest leaders and thinkers from past to present have called on the privileged and those in comfort to give a thought to those less fortunate. The Orang Asli community, one of the most vulnerable communities in Malaysia, has occupied our thoughts for some time. We ventured out of our comfort zone of aiding urban communities and reached out to an Orang Asli settlement in Janda Baik, Pahang, in We did not know what is it like out there in rural areas, and we did not know if we would be well-received by the communities. We learned about the needs from other Orang Asli communities, and so we moved on to reach out to the Mah Meri of Selangor, the Jahut and Jakun tribes of Pahang, the Orang Laut of Johor, and all the way to the Jahai community in Grik, Perak and the Penans in Sarawak. All communities welcomed us warmly and appreciated our effort to extend a helping hand outside of the Klang Valley, and well beyond paved roads. Orang Asli communities face a host of challenges, which differ from one village to the other. The only thing constant was their resolve not to remain a vulnerable community. They see their way forward through education. Successfully attaining education, we discovered, is not as straightforward for the Orang Asli. Geographical challenges (distance and challenging terrain) from their village to schools, adapting to new and foreign systems of learning, and affording school uniforms and textbooks are amongst the major hindrances Orang Asli children have to overcome in acquiring a wholesome education in school. After adopting two primary Orang Asli schools, namely SK Bukit Lanjan in Damansara Perdana, Selangor, and SK Penderas in Kuala Krau, Pahang, and supporting three community-based 22 MyKasih News Issue #19

Teachers in Orang Asli schools attest that just having a company show interest in their school has given tremendous encouragement for the students, their parents and even the teachers! The kind gesture of rendering financial assistance further motivates teachers to do the best for the students. My wife, Jean, launched the MyKasih Orang Asli Children s Education Fund in 2015 and together with the MyKasih Love My School student bursary programme, individual and corporate cirizens can give hope to Orang Asli communities for a better future, one school at a time. So we appeal to you to invest in improving the lives of Orang Asli children through education. Let s be a society that treats our most vulnerable well. Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat. 25 Love My School Success Stories The story of Joshua... ROARing with potential, MyKasih youth secures scholarship It s an age old tale of an intelligent and hardworking student from a family struggling to make ends meet. Joshua Chong is the youngest child of Madam Chong, MyKasih food aid recipient from Kayu Ara, Selangor. J oshua and his family had a bright future ahead of them with his father working as a head chef in a prominent establishment in China. Their good fortune was however, short lived. When he was still in his elementary years, his father had a stroke that paralyzed him from waist down. The debilitating condition was made worse when both his legs were amputated recently, as a result of diabetes. This left Joshua s mother the sole breadwinner of the family. To supplement the family income, his oldest sister had to abandon plans for further education to get a job. Despite the adversity the Chong family faced, furthering his education remained top priority. When Hong Leong Foundation reached out to MyKasih to identify potential applicants from our database for the Reach Out and Rise (ROAR) scholarship, the collaboration proved fruitful. Joshua managed to secure a full scholarship from ROAR to pursue a diploma in Business Administration at SEGi University, which covers tuition fees, accommodation, food, as well as enrichment programmes organized by education NGO, SOLS 24/7. Joshua maintains an impressive average of 3.6 CGPA for his diploma exams while working part-time at a café in Kota Damansara, earning between RM RM 400 a month. Upon graduation in December 2017, Joshua hopes to complete his degree in Marketing at the same university and work towards becoming a professional marketer in the medical industry as he finds the knowledge of medicine to be very interesting. Joshua s story has deeply inspired us here in MyKasih Foundation to reach out to our beneficiaries and support them in their pursuit for higher education, said Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat, MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder. In expressing gratitude towards Hong Leong Foundation, Tan Sri Dr Ngau added, Hong Leong Foundation has set a great example of how we are able to extend help to deserving individuals. I hope that together, we will be able to double the reach to make higher education accessible for youths. Education is the most meaningful way we can empower our beneficiary families. That was the main reason behind the setting up of the MyKasih Love My School bursary scheme for primary and secondary students. MyKasih Foundation is open to collaborating with other foundations or funding institutions to support MyKasih children and youths in their studies, said Tan Sri Dr Ngau. 25 MyKasih News Issue #19 MyKasih News Issue #19 25

26 Mah Meri of Carey Island empowered through Mengecapi Aspirasi Diri HSBC Bank Malaysia and MyKasih Foundation team up with Lifeworks to deliver impactful income-generation programmes, making a difference in the lives of those ready to achieve their fullest potential. 47 Orang Asli whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and craft-making were empowered through a fourmonth long Mengecapi Aspirasi Diri or MAD programme together with MyKasih Foundation. The Mah Meri s masked dance and intricately woven pandanus pouches are world renowned, bringing the craftsmen, women and dancers to countries such as Germany, Morroco, Turkey and France to perform and trade their crafts. Despite jet-setting around the world, back home in their village, most of them remain impoverished. Recognizing this quandary, MyKasih Foundation reached out to HSBC Bank Malaysia to fund MyKasih s tenth empowerment and incomegeneration programme with the main aim of empowering MyKasih participants to become self-aware, confident, financially and emotionally liberated. The modules cover basic financial management, marketing, effective problem-solving and decision-making, communication skills, and creating a positive self-image. struggles they were facing due to irregular income they earned as farmers and craftsmen. We felt that we needed to do more than help them put food on the table, said MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat. The community was receptive to MyKasih s entrepreneurship incomegeneration programme and embarked on the programme in December 2016 with funding support from HSBC Bank Malaysia. The programme s graduation ceremony took place on 25 March 2017 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Bumbun, a primary school within the village where the participants have diligently attended eight coaching sessions over the past four months. Out of the 47 community members who registered for the programme, 20 graduated with excellence for full attendance and surpassing their income targets. Maznah Unyan, head of women s group Tompoq Topoh ( First Weave ), shared that she has learnt about longterm personal financial management and planning. She now recognises the true value of her selfworth and appreciates her position as a leader of the women artisan group, as well as a skilled weaver and performer (singing and playing traditional musical instruments) and a spokesperson for the community. She feels that she has become more in her life s pursuits and has learned to be dedicated appreciative of all that has happened in her life. Lead Coach Sharmini Hensen from Lifeworks, MyKasih s partner for the MAD programme, explained, In the Money Magnet module, each participant The Pulau Carey Mah Meri community were recipients under the MyKasih food aid programme in We learnt about the financial A graduate teaching one of Lifework s trainers how to weave a nipah decorative sash 26 MyKasih News Issue #19

Their determination and teamwork generated RM 32,830 within the four-month programme period, surpassing the income goal of RM 19,440 which they had set at the beginning of the programme. The graduation ceremony included a demonstration on weaving, a display of handicrafts for sale, and a few performances of traditional songs and dances, all of which are goods and services which are additional sources of income to the Mah Meri, but more importantly, for the younger generation remain strongly connected to their unique cultural identity. HSBC Bank Malaysia has been a supportive donor partner to MyKasih Foundation since the latter s early years of establishment. Melissa Wong, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad s corporate sustainability assistant manager receiving a token of appreciation. I attended the programme s first briefing in December 2016 simply out of curiosity. After attending a few sessions, I started feeling more confident and in control of my destiny. I am now better able to manage my finances, and I feel more positive and happier than I did before, I have learnt how to market my carvings better and can decide what designs are more marketable than others.
