New 2013 Grant Cycles In an effort to efficiently manage our grantmaking process due to growing demands, changing needs and footprint expansion, People s United Community Foundation will be transitioning to a trimester grant cycle, which will take effect in February Please note that all current December 1, 2012 grant applicants are still eligible to apply for the December 1 deadline and funding decisions will still be made in January. However, this funding cycle will change in Please be sure to review our new Grant Cycle Table to determine your organization s new application deadline. The Foundation hopes our new grant cycles do not effect your organization s budget and implementation planning and that a sufficient amount of time has been given for our grantees to adjust to the new grant application deadlines and funding decision timeframes. PUCF Awards $610,000 in 4th Quarter 2012 People s United Community Foundation is proud to announce that for the fourth quarter of 2012, we have awarded $610,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations throughout our footprint, which includes Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. A record number of grants were distributed during the fourth quarter for a total of 95 grants awarded to our nonprofit partners; with 32 percent allocated to community development, 31 percent to youth development and 24 percent to affordable housing initiatives. The Foundation also contributed 13 percent of its funding to local United Way organizations across our footprint as a matching donation to the People s United Bank annual employee giving campaign. It was also a record year for the Foundation, distributing the highest number of grants in its five-year history, with 346 grants awarded, totaling more than $2.2 million. Since inception in 2007, 1,209 grants have been awarded to nonprofit organizations, totaling more than $12.4 million. (See page 6 for a list of 4Q grant recipients). 2 ATTENTION ALL CURRENT GRANTEES! NEW Grant Cycles for 2013 The table below illustrates the transition for our current grantees only. This does not affect organizations that have never been a PUCF grantee. Application Deadline Notice: Guidelines for determining new grant cycle: 1. Refer to the IRS 501c3 determination letter to verify the official name listed for your organization. 2. Determine the grant cycle in which your organization last submitted its 2012 request (March 1, June 1, Sept.1, or Dec. 1). 3. Using the Grantees Impacted column in the table below, determine your new application deadline and grant cycle decision date. All current December 1, 2012 grant applicants are still eligible to apply for the December 1 deadline (January 2013 grant cycle decision date). 3 A Surge of Support for Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts Thousands of residents throughout our region, including family, friends, co-workers and community partners were impacted by the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. To this day, some area neighborhoods are continuing to cope with the long-term recovery efforts and face a long road ahead to restoring their homes and rebuilding their communities. In addition, People s United Bank donated bottled water to some of the hardest hit areas, while branch locations served as designated charging stations and a place to get warm. People s United employees also went above and beyond to assist customers, from keeping branch doors open and banking systems operating to offering individual and personalized assistance. Employees even visited customers homes to check on their well-being and deliver a hot meal, while others volunteered with local organizations to assist in the increase in demand for food, shelter and emergency supplies, and to help in the massive clean-up efforts across the Northeast. Each day after the storm as our radio waves and television sets broadcast the destruction and pleas for help s, newsletters and social media posts flooded our screens with communication of the relief efforts underway. Countless community partners eagerly stepped-up to assist the residents affected in our local communities and even reached out beyond their borders to help those in need. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by Hurricane Sandy, and People s United Community Foundation thanks all of our community partners for providing additional assistance to those residents impacted by the storm throughout our communities. From natural disasters and individual hardships to the economic crisis and high unemployment rates, our nonprofit partners are always there to help those in turmoil. So it was no surprise, when Superstorm Sandy struck, that our community partners responded immediately with critical emergency aid and ongoing support. As you know, People s United also has a long and deep tradition of generosity in helping those in need, and responded to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts by launching an employee matching giving campaign with the American Red Cross, which will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000 by People s United Community Foundation. 4 Shepherds Leads the Way to College for Inner-City Youth With the support of the People s United Community Foundation, Shepherds Inc., introduced the College Prep, Access & Readiness Program and the Toolkit for Self-Mastery Success initiatives to provide students with the skills they need to be successful in high school, higher education and the professional world. Shepherds is a non-denominational nonprofit organization that reaches out to disadvantaged inner-city Connecticut youth, offering them access to a quality college preparatory high school education with the introduction of a positive role Shepherds Students at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport. model a Mentor. Over the last three years, 100% of the Shepherds Seniors have earned acceptances to institutions of higher learning. The College Prep, Access & Readiness Program includes student/mentor college visits, financial aid parent workshops, helps to cover college application fees and facilitate additional acceptances and financial aid packages. The development of the Shepherds Toolkit Program has provided students with organizational, study, interviewing, communication, social and etiquette workshops. Both programs will impact 60+ at-risk teenagers this year, giving them the critical life skills needed for success. Shepherds is looking for Sponsor/Mentors to work with their deserving young people. For more information, call , Info@ShepherdsInc.com or visit their website at Continued Support for Transitional Housing Graduates Since 1994, Marguerite s Place has been providing transitional housing and support services to homeless women with children in Nashua, New Hampshire to help them achieve and sustain self sufficiency. Marguerite s Place has achieved years of success in offering 10 furnished apartments and providing assistance in obtaining and managing personal finances, placement in job-training programs, community involvement with local employers and support in securing permanent, affordable housing. But six years later, Marguerite s Place realized the need to provide continued support to program graduates. In 2000, the Board of Directors of Marguerite s Place was faced with the possibility that there would be no place for the families to go once they successfully completed the transitional housing program. In response to the lack of permanent, affordable housing in the City of Nashua, Marguerite s Place created MP Housing, Inc. By purchasing available, modestly priced residential property (e.g. condominium units), Marguerite s Place is now able to provide permanent housing opportunities for the continued needs of its transitional housing residents. To ensure long-term success, Marguerite s Place also provides a five year Aftercare Program for families who have moved on to independent living. 5 Breaking Down Language Barriers to Home Ownership The Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership (MVHP) in Lowell, Massachusetts offers a series of home buyer training classes in different languages including English and Spanish, and collaborates with the International Institute to offer classes in Arabic and the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association for its Khmer classes. The Project Genesis Home Buyer Training Program is a comprehensive series of training seminars for first-time home buyers, which consists of 10 hours of instruction over four evening sessions. Topics covered include: Overview of the Home Buying Process, Mortgage Application Process, Down Payment Assistance, Legal Aspects of Purchasing, Home Inspections, and Household Budgeting, among others. The program is taught by MVHP staff as well as several volunteer real estate Jim Wilde, MVHP Executive Director, teaching "Project Genesis" Home Buyer Training Class and banking professionals, including Debbie Stoodly of People s United Bank. MVHP has been teaching the classes for 20 years and has had over 13,000 families complete the training. For more information visit the Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership website at MACC Charities Serves Up Hot Meals and More For over 39 years, MACC Charities has served as a primary provider of emergency support to individuals and families in need throughout Greater Manchester, Connecticut. Serving more than 40,000 meals each year, the MACC Community Kitchen provides a hot mid-day meal every Monday through Saturday at no cost, and through a partnership with the Salvation Army, meals are also available on Sundays. In addition to the noon-time meals, breakfast and dinner are served to guests at the 40-bed homeless shelter that MACC operates, as well as an Emergency Food Pantry and two satellite pantries, which served more than 1,300 households in Over the past six years, the need for food assistance in the Greater Manchester and Bolton area has increased significantly, with the number of senior citizens accessing its food services programs growing by 120%. Concern also grew over the weekend food needs of children, resulted in the creation of the MACC Grab and Go program, which provides weekend food staples and snacks every Friday during the school year (and summer months as needed) to 81 eligible children attending Washington Elementary School in Manchester.
