4 NHMRC EU Collaborative Research Grants Scheme Participation in international projects allows Australian researchers to engage with world leading researchers from the EU on wellfunded projects of the highest calibre under Horizon 2020 Grants are for up to five years duration NHMRC funds up to $500,000 per EU application contribution to Australian institutions and researchers not intended to cover the entire cost of participation $3.6 million available for the scheme in 2016 expected to open later this year

5 Eligibility requirements Only applicants successful through the EU process are eligible to apply to NHMRC Only one NHMRC EU Scheme application will be accepted and funded for each successful EU application (one Chief Investigator A, one Administering Institution) All Australian CIs, and the Australian Administering Institution, are to be listed on the EU application Funding may not be sought where the EU is providing funds for the Australian component CIs must be based in Australia for the duration of the grant

6 Topics by NHMRC NHMRC supports selected topics as part of H2020: Societal Challenges Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing Personalising health and care Selected topics are relevant to the objectives set out in the NHMRC Corporate Plan, including the National Health Priority Areas Selected on advice from NHMRC Research Committee and NHMRC CEO Topics for the 2016 round for funding commencing in 2017 will be available towards the end of this year

7 NHMRC EU grants funded (FP7) Round Applications Funded Applications with funding partners from France n/a n/a n/a n/a * under embargo *In the 2013 round all eligible applications were funded to 45% of their NHMRC adjusted budget. n/a data is not available

8 NHMRC Early Career Fellowships Scheme Provides salary support to researchers who are less than two years post-phd Must be Australian citizens or permanent residents to accept the fellowship Fellowships are for four years duration Four years in Australia Two years overseas followed by two years in Australia Between five Fellows have gone to France to complete their ECF INSERM Fellowship Memorandum of Understanding established in 1986 Reciprocal arrangement NHMRC provides French researcher in Australia with salary support and an accommodation allowance for two years and vice versa Not well subscribed Reviewing this arrangement

9 Project Grants Largest funding scheme Provides research and personnel support Opportunity for international researchers based in Australia to obtain funding through collaboration with Australian colleagues Researchers who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia can apply as Chief Investigators B to J If based in Australia for the duration of the grant, may be eligible to request a personnel support package
