2 CIHR OPPORTUNITIES Supports international collaboration within many of its programs under its Framework for International Relations and Cooperation. Participates in the Global Health Research Initiative, along with Health Canada, DFATD, and IDRC. Sometimes issues specific int l calls, often as Team Grants. 3 US FEDERAL FUNDING Canadians may apply as lead or partner in many cases: National Institutes of Health (NIH) Congressionally-Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) N.B. US Public Health Service s Financial Conflict of Interest Policy applies contact IR&D

4 HORIZON 2020 (E.U.) The main financial tool through which the European Union supports research & development activities. Runs from (previous program: FP7). Calls for proposals under Societal Challenges include stream for Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing projects: Some target Cdns as partners and all calls are open to Cdn participation N.B. Europeans must lead! No direct funding for Cdns but some calls synced with CIHR Grants Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions include fellowship opportunities for two-way exchange of postdoctoral scholars (to/from Canada/Europe)

5 GRAND CHALLENGES CANADA Stars in Global Health Phase I: $100k Phase II Transition to Scale: $1M Grand Challenges in Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health: Saving Brains Saving Lives at Birth Global Mental Health

6 GATES FOUNDATION Grand Challenges Explorations (for development, incl. MNCH, vaccines, family planning) Grand Challenges in Global Health: specific calls, e.g. Measuring/Achieving Solutions for Healthy Birth, Growth, and Development Putting Women and Girls at the Centre of Development Open Concept Memos accepted for Global Health Grants (Enteric & Diarrheal Diseases, Malaria, Pneumonia)

7 OTHER OPPORTUNITIES Human Frontier Science Program Program Grants / Young Investigator Grants: competition open now Register by 19 March / LOI due by 31 March 2015 France-Canada Research Fund (FCRF) Grants up to $15,000 for two-year research projects conducted by French/Canadian teams in all fields, including health. Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute Variety of small grant & travel funding mechanisms for research into development issues which impact India (including Health).
