3 Heart Foundation Research Strategy To help achieve the HF organisational goals, the Research Program has developed its own Research Strategy underpinned by three aspirations: 1. National leadership: Provide national leadership in cardiovascular research to improve the health of all Australians 2. Knowledge transfer facilitation: Ensure integration between research, policy and practice to more rapidly improve cardiovascular health 3. Responsive funding portfolio: Implement a Research Portfolio that is distinctive, adaptive and responsive to opportunities and needs to support and develop excellent cardiovascular research in Australia 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 3

8 Future Leader Fellowship Now Open Duration: 4 years (min. 0.6 FTE with no extension of time) Funding amount: Level 1: $90,000 pro rata + $40,000 project support per annum Level 2: $110,000 pro rata + $50,000 project support per annum For: cardiovascular researchers with 3-<7 years (Level 1) or 7-<10 years (Level 2) post PhD experience at time of application Awarded in 2013: 15 (17% success rate) 2014 Closing Date: 4 April Estimated number available for 2015 commencement: 16 (8/level) Key points: Substantial project support in addition to salary support Successful candidates will be eligible for Innovation Award consideration 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 8

9 Postdoctoral Fellowship Now Open Duration: 2 years (min. 0.8 FTE with no extension of time) Funding amount: $75,000 pro rata per annum For: early career researchers within 3 years post PhD at time of application Awarded in 2013: 13 (17% success rate) 2014 Closing Date: 11 April Estimated number available for 2015 commencement: 10 Key points: Successful candidates will be eligible for Innovation Award consideration Successful candidate will be eligible to apply for Collaboration & Exchange Award 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 9

10 Health Professional Scholarship Duration: 3 years (@1.0 FTE) of funding (min. 0.5 FTE) Funding amount: $40,000 pro rata per annum For: Health professionals working in cardiovascular health care to undertake a PhD Awarded in 2013: 14 (50% success rate) 2014 Closing Date: 20 June Estimated number available for 2015 commencement: 8 Key points: Encouraged to continue cardiovascular health delivery To encourage non academic health practitioners to become competitive to main stream research funding 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 10

11 Australian Indigenous Scholarship Duration: up to 3 years (@1.0 FTE) of funding (min. 0.5 FTE) Funding amount: $40,000 pro rata per annum For: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples interested in undertaking a PhD or Masters degree in cardiovascular research Awarded in 2013: 3 (100% success rate) 2014 Closing Date: 20 June Estimated number available for 2015 commencement: 5 Key points: Must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Must undertake cardiovascular research as a PhD or Masters by Research Mentorship program to be developed for successful candidates 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 11

12 Vanguard Grant Duration: 1 year funding with possibility to extend in time only Funding amount: $75,000 For: To provide funding to test the feasibility of innovative concepts in public health and/or health services, including clinical service delivery, which may lead to larger, more rigorous testing in the future. Awarded in 2013: 14 (18% success rate) 2014 Closing Date: 2 May Estimated number available for 2015 commencement: 15 Key points: These projects should aim to produce tangible outcomes with the potential to improve cardiovascular health. Basic clinical and/or biomedical projects will not be considered 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 12

13 Collaboration & Exchange Award Duration: up to 6 months Funding amount: $5,000 For: HF funded (& administered) scholars and postdoctoral fellows wishing to travel interstate/overseas to visit research facilities and to develop new collaborations, exchange innovation and knowledge Awarded in 2013: 13 (100% success rate) 2014 Closing Date: 12 September Estimated number available for 2015 commencement: 10 Key points: Only available to HF funded and administered scholars and Postdoctoral Fellows 2012 National Heart Foundation of Australia 13

14 Partnership Engagement Grant Duration: as per conditions of partnership funding scheme the application is prepared for Funding amount: up to $150,000 front-loading cash contribution per project (additional in-kind contribution is negotiable) For: Open to all researchers with cardiovascular research projects that are of interest to the Heart Foundation Awarded in 2013: 5 (22% success rate)* 2014 Closing Dates: 12 February and 24 November (TBC) Estimated number available in 2014: 3-4 Key points: Short Expression of Interest (EOI) is required by closing date to allow the Heart Foundation to determine possibility of partnership * One application ultimately successful with the other funding agency and two applications still pending National Heart Foundation of Australia 14

15 HF Focus Grant Duration: Depending on specific calls for applications Funding amount: up to $150,000 For: Candidates who fit criteria set in specific calls for applications designed to address research questions directly relevant to work of the Heart Foundation Awarded in 2013: 3 (30% success rate) Closing Date: TBD Estimated number available for 2014 commencement: 2-3 Key points: The HF to determine and announce research questions for funding under this scheme, no unsolicited proposal by researchers are considered National Heart Foundation of Australia 15
