1 Guidance for Applicants: Visiting Researchers We invite leading data scientists from any country or discipline to become a Visiting Researcher at The Alan Turing Institute. Scope: The aim of the Visiting Researcher Programme is to generate collaborations, facilitate knowledge exchange, and explore new or emerging research topics in data science. We are welcome applications from researchers with an interest in advancing the strategic priorities of the Turing. While they are in residence, Visiting Researchers will be expected to take part in workshops and seminars, and work closely with Turing researchers to contribute to research projects, share knowledge, and develop partnerships in areas for potential long-term collaboration. Eligibility: Leading researchers may apply from any institution, anywhere in the world, to undertake excellent data science research here at the Turing. Please note that non-eu applicants may require a visa to undertake research at the Institute. Applicants are required to investigate and arrange their own visas. In order to be eligible under this call, Visiting Researchers are required to have identified in advance one or more Turing-affiliated researchers (Turing Fellows and/or Research Fellows) to support their application. Prior to applying, prospective Visiting Researchers should have discussed their research plan with their primary Turing host to ensure that it fits with the Institute s mission and agreed a mutually-convenient start date which is no sooner than three months after the call close and no later than 12 months of the call closing. Applicants will be required to upload one supporting statement from the Turing-affiliated researcher(s) to the application portal in order for applications to be submitted. Applications for full- and part-time placements will be accepted. Typically, placements for Visiting Researchers will last 8-12 weeks. We will consider placements up to six-months, and may consider longer placements in exceptional circumstances. If you wish to propose a placement which exceeds six-months, please contact Research@turing.ac.uk in the first instance. The primary criteria for selection of Visiting Researchers are set out in the Assessment section below. Applicants are expected to show they have established leadership within their field and have at least 5 years post-doctoral experience. PhD students and early career researchers are not eligible for this scheme. 1 Previous Visiting Researchers are not eligible to apply. Support available: The Institute can provide financial support to Visiting Researchers in the form of reimbursement for costs associated with travel and/or accommodation for the duration of the visit. Specific amounts will be dependent upon the duration of the visit and the location from which the Visiting Researcher will be travelling. Details of the maximum reimbursement amounts can be found at Appendix I. All Visiting Researchers will be required to bring their own laptop and/or other computing equipment. In addition to access to desk space and general research support, Visiting Researchers will have access to the Institute s extensive network of academic and non-academic collaborators, and will be able to participate in a variety of seminars, workshops, lectures, and other events. There are normally two annual call dates, one in Winter (aimed at start dates within the following June September period) and one in Spring (aimed at start dates between the following October May period). The review panel will usually take place within 6 weeks of the call closing. The next deadline is Thursday 22 March 2018 midday GMT. Any applications received prior to this deadline will be reviewed by the panel, expected to take place in April. Any applications received after this deadline will be reviewed following the next Spring deadline. Deliverables: As part of your application you will be required to provide details of the research you plan to undertake while you are a Visiting Researcher at the Institute. This should include specific milestones and deliverables. All Visiting Researchers will be required to give a short talk during their time at the Institute. Furthermore, all successful applicants are expected to pursue the translation of their funded project into tangible outputs and impacts. At a minimum, the Institute requires that all Visiting Researchers submit a one-page summary of the work supported by the Institute within four weeks of the project end date. Any publications, papers, or other outputs are required to recognise the support of the Institute with the inclusion of the line: This research was undertaken with the support of the Alan Turing Institute (EPSRC Grant Number EP/N510129/1). Assessment: All proposals will be assessed against the following criteria: Calibre of applicant A proven publication record or demonstrable ability to publish in peer-reviewed academic journals and other high-quality publications; Evidence of setting strategic direction, and/or leadership and management of multiple programmes, and/or teams and resources International scope and internationally leading scientific excellence Demonstrable experience of translating research into impact (academic and/or instrumental); and Demonstrable experience of collaborative/partnership working. Quality of the proposal Research excellence; Innovation and originality; Fit with the Institute s strategy and current programmes of research; International scope and involvement of internationally-leading researchers; Clarity of the project plan;

4 Clarity of the expected outputs and impacts; Scope of applicant to encourage and enhance cross-disciplinary working at the institute Breadth of disciplinary and/or institutional and/or sector reach; and Consideration of ethics. Value for money Reasonable costs in line with the guidelines set out at Appendix I; and (Potential) leverage brought to the Institute through the research by way of, for example, in-kind contributions, external funding, industry contacts, access to hardware/software/tools/datasets, etc. Dissemination and impact Timeliness of proposal; Plans for scholarly communication/publication; Plans for engagement and collaboration during the visit with the broader Turing community; Plans for external engagement and outreach with communities beyond the Turing (including non-academic and general public if relevant); Potential of proposal to underpin long-term international collaboration Potential for pathways to impact that address the strategic priorities of the Turing (e.g. Engineering, Technology, Defence & Security, Smart Cities, Economics, Health & Wellbeing, Government); and Creative thinking about addition pathways to impact. Please note that proposals will be assessed against these criteria first and foremost; however, the review panel may also consider disciplinary and/or application area(s) to ensure a diverse portfolio.

5 Appendix I: Travel and Accommodation Guidelines for Visiting Researchers These guidelines apply to all Visiting Researchers and are supplementary to the existing Turing Expenses Policy. The Alan Turing Institute is a charity, registered with the Charities Commission, and receives significant public funding. As such, we must ensure that our expenditure is relevant to our charitable objectives and can be fully justified. Costs can only be requested where directly related to the proposed visit dates, duration and time commitments. For example, where the visitor is proposing to spend two days a week at the Turing, accommodation and travel should only be requested and costed for 2 days per week. Principally, the Turing expects all travel be made by the most cost-effective and low-carbon method available, balanced with safety, comfort, and timeliness. It is expected that standard or economy class travel is taken for all journeys within the UK and Europe. Premium economy may be booked for international flights which are greater than 6 hours duration. Taxis will only be reimbursed in exceptional circumstances, or where public transport is not viable.
