Summary of Request Bedrock Lodge is requesting a grant of $7,000 toward their $50,000 Rock Sculpture project. This project will promote appreciation of three-dimensional artwork. An educational component of the project will introduce rock sculpture to elementary students in grades 3-6. The Rock Sculpture exhibit will open October 1st at the Bedrock Art Center, and will continue through December 31. Over 100 artists will be invited to submit sculptures for exhibit. An Arts Center committee will act as jury to choose entries for the exhibit. The Art Center plans to display 75 entries. Children from the Bedrock Elementary School in grades 3 6 will be introduced to this art form in a 4- week classroom unit. At the end of the 4-week instruction, they will visit the exhibit free of charge. An Art Center docent will lead their private tour and provide additional educational information. Rev of 3

2 Organization s Mission Statement Community Foundation DeKalb County Bedrock Lodge s mission is to support the Bedrock community s efforts to promote interest in the arts and support lifelong education. Explanation of benefits from grant 1. Who and how many will you serve? How will they benefit? We expect about 750 adults and 300 students will visit the Art Center over the three-month exhibit. We anticipate that 25% of the adults (187) and 60% of the students (180) will be first-time visitors to the Center. This exhibit will be enjoyable and culturally enriching for all who attend. People will make a connection between the community s important natural resource (rocks from the quarry) and beauty, something we often overlook. 2. How will you know how people benefit? All visitors to the exhibit have the opportunity to fill out a comment card. We expect about 20% of visitors will complete a card. As part of the art class at their school, all of the Bedrock Elementary students will be required to complete an evaluation of their visit. Both forms will ask visitors what they learned, how their view of rocks may have changed, etc. We are hopeful that half of the first-time visitors will return to the Art Center for another visit within one year. The Art Center will track attendance in order to verify this. 3. How will this grant help you achieve your organization s mission? Publicity about our organization and its collaboration with the Art Center for this exhibit will be distributed through the newspapers and on flyers sent home with school children. More of the general public will become aware that the Bedrock Lodge supports the arts. This should attract new Lodge members and new donors to our art projects. This new influx of interest and dollars will build the capacity of our organization to support future projects. From the grant proposal: We expect about 750 adults and 300 students will visit the Art Center over the three-month exhibit. Grant report: We expected 750 adults and 300 students to visit the exhibit (1,050 total). The actual number of visitors was 800 adults and 230 children (1,030 total). We were happy to attract 50 more adults than anticipated, an increase of 7%. We served 70 fewer children (23% less) than anticipated. The reason for serving fewer children than expected was that two of our planned dates for school field trips were cancelled due to a road closure caused by a rock slide. The schools were not able to reschedule the field trips while the exhibit was open. How did your program/project benefit the people served? How do you know? From the grant proposal: All visitors to the exhibit have the opportunity to fill out a comment card. We expect about 20% of visitors will complete a card. As part of the art class at their school, all of the Bedrock Elementary students will be required to complete an evaluation of their visit. Both forms will ask visitors what they learned, how their view of rocks may have changed, etc. Grant report: 280 of the adults who visited the exhibit (35%) and 225 children (98%) completed a comment card or evaluation of their visits. One visitor wrote, I was amazed and delighted by the artists ability to create something beautiful from the rocks I see every day. 5 sculptures. 32% of the adults and 73% of the children said they were highly likely to visit the museum in the future. The final numbers for first-time visitors is not available at this time. The Art Center will share that information with us when it becomes available. How did the benefit described in your answer above relate to your organization s mission? Two individuals asked the Lodge to keep them informed when we need funding for new projects. Five potential members expressed interest in joining the Lodge and serving on its committees. The Lodge raised $54,123 and spent $51,999 for the Rock Sculpture project. The money left after all expenses were paid will be used for the next exhibit. The community foundation s grant was spent in its entirety in two areas; marketing costs and educational materials. Max, a student at Shale Elementary School, visited the Art Center exhibit with his third-grade class. Max was fascinated with the sculptures, especially the Dino dinosaur figure carved from sandstone. Max created his own Dino sculpture using papier-mâché and proudly brought it to school for show and tell.
