Annual Report 2013 President s Report This year culminated in the reintroduction of a pair of gibbons from the Javan Gibbon Centre (JGC) into the newly established Malabar Mountain release site. After many years of preparation and suitable site selection, Sadewa and Kiki were released into the Mt Puntang area under the cooperative management of Perhutani (State Forestry Department) and JGC staff. This project has enabled us to fulfill the ultimate objective of the JGC, to rehabilitate gibbons for release back into the wild. This not only serves to improve the welfare outcome for individual gibbons, but more importantly will help to re-establish a population of Javan gibbons in this area. From a funding perspective, our income was a little down this year due to the lack of any major grants. A large part of the year was spent negotiating with donors and grant providers, some of which look like they will have a positive outcome giving significant boost to the project. The total budget for JGC and the Reintroduction Project in 2014 will be more than triple previous years, so SGP will certainly need to work hard to uphold our financial commitment to these projects. JGF is also working to secure additional partners in Indonesia. SGP held several successful events throughout the year and have a major event, the 2013 Art Auction scheduled for October this year, which will also boost current financial year income. Social networking has grown into an essential awareness-raising tool for us. The increase in Facebook friends is certainly helping to get the message out about gibbon conservation. This social-networking is helping to attract a new audience to events, and we hope to be able to use this even more effectively in future. SGP has continued to support the important collaboration with Wildlife Asia. This collaborative project is gaining momentum and interest from our supporters who appreciate a more holistic approach to conservation. Through the growth of Wildlife Asia, we are seeking greater protection of gibbon habitats, conservation of other endangered species and their habitats, and in raising vital awareness in combating the illegal wildlife trade. We are looking forward to the coming year, which will see the continuation of the Reintroduction Program, the rescue and rehabilitation of new confiscated (or rescued) pets to JGC, and collaboration with other gibbon conservation projects. I am also looking forward to being involved in the development of IUCN Guidelines for Gibbon Reintroduction, which will be an important step towards a more scientific and methodical approach to these efforts, intended to improve conservation outcomes. We will also be stepping up the planning for the 2 nd Gibbon Husbandry and Conservation Conference, which will be hosted by Perth Zoo. So there are certainly lots of exciting things on the horizon. Thank you once again to all of our supporters who continue to assist us with funds and share the story of the Silvery gibbon. Thank you also of course to the wonderful SGP crew who remain totally dedicated to the cause and donate their time and funds to support the growth of the project, as well as the amazing teams in Indonesia who work tirelessly for the conservation of gibbons. We acknowledge the incredibly hard work that Anton and his team have put in over the last year to ensure the successful reintroduction of Sadewa and Kiki into the wild. Looking forward Clare Campbell SGP Annual Report

Project Objectives for 2012/13 As outlined in our Business Plan the purpose of SGP is to assist in the operation of a rescue and rehabilitation centre that provides an outstanding level of care to confiscated and donated Silvery gibbons and to assist in the establishment of viable reintroduction, habitat and population protection programs. Our primary goals are to; 1. Release successfully rehabilitated Silvery gibbons into suitably protected habitat. 2. Employ local people and foster increased employment and community development opportunities. 3. Maximise the benefit to conservation through habitat protection. 4. Maximise the benefit to conservation through research. The operational plan for 2012/2013 highlighted the following activities inclusive of those activities not achieved in previous years; 1. Begin active confiscation of pet gibbons. 2. Ensure effective operation of GPU s in all key Silvery gibbon populations. 3. On-going operation of JGC. 4. Facilitate contribution of international zoo s to effective Javan gibbon conservation projects. 5. Ensure Mobile Education Unit operating effectively. 6. Reintroduction monitored, documented and published. As well as these on ground activities, SGP aimed to raise awareness of Gibbon conservation issues through education activities, social media and community events. Project Outcomes 2012/13 Reintroduction Program JGC was established in 2002 as a rescue and rehabilitation centre for the Endangered Silvery or Javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch) in response to an identified need for such a facility as part of the global conservation of this species. The primary objective of the centre has always been to rehabilitate and release gibbons into suitable areas of protected forest. The ultimate aim of the reintroduction program is to successfully protect and re-populate a significant area of habitat with rehabilitated Javan gibbons. This project also hopes to engage local communities, improve livelihoods and to re-vegetate surrounding areas of habitat. Not only will this result in a positive welfare outcome for gibbons currently housed at JGC but will also have significant conservation impact if a new population can be created and secured, and protect an area that is an essential water resource for West Java. The first trial release occurred in October 2009, with the pair monitored intensively for two years. They continue to thrive in forest nearby to JGC. A second trial release occurred in May 2012, which sadly ended in the incidental hunting of one of the gibbons, Jeffrey. Prior to this, the pair appeared to adapt well to their wild environment. Despite this tragedy, the goal remains from both a welfare and conservation perspective to pursue a reintroduction program that will ideally re-establish a new population of Javan gibbons in West Java. After numerous surveys of potential sites throughout West Java, the Javan Gibbon Foundation (JGF) this year negotiated the use of the Malabar forest. The Malabar mountain, located in Bandung regency, West Java comprises of almost 9000 hectares of land at an altitude of 1,000 to 2,300 above sea level. The area is covered by tree plantations (26.9%) and forest (73.1%), and is under the management of Perhutani (Forestry State Enterprise). 2 SGP Annual Report 2013

The Malabar mountain is an area that is critical for watershed protection as well as the conservation of flora and fauna in Java. The area is the core site of a large and significant water catchment area, upstream of the Citarum river, the largest river in West Java. This watershed provides water for about 10 million people along the basin, with at least 25 million people depending on this water source for water and electricity. In addition, the water shed provides irrigation for 240,000 hectare and supplies 80% of the raw water for Jakarta residents. Figure 1: Map of Malabar mountain in Citarum watershed Source: Citarum Facts (28/1/2013 This site offers both suitable habitat for gibbons as well as the opportunity to engage local communities and potentially develop alternative livelihood initiatives and conservation awareness activities in the region. Existing protocols are in place in terms of selection of site and selection of suitable individuals however many of these are yet to be tested. With each new reintroduction of a gibbon species comes increased information and knowledge that can be used to increase survival rate in future reintroduction programs. The Javan gibbon reintroduction program presents an outstanding opportunity to progress this element of gibbon conservation, potentially benefiting other programs and the long-term survival of gibbon species. Figure 2. Mt Puntang Release site The reintroduction project contains various elements, implemented in stages; 1. Community socialisation and education - underway 2. Release site preparation completed for first pair, required for second pair 3. 4 Details of each activity; 1. Education activities have targeted students and communities in the areas surrounding Malabar Mts. The MCEU will continue to visit schools and communities as well as conduct field visits to the site. Activities have included presentations, discussions, nature games and conservation films. Awareness materials such as fact sheets, posters and Javan gibbon stickers have been distributed. The key messages delivered have been the conservation of Javan gibbon and their habitat and the importance of conserving water. An animated video has been developed by JGF educating viewers about the direct link between gibbon and water conservation and the impact on their livelihoods. Figure 3 and 4. Education and community socialisation activities 2. One soft release enclosure has already been constructed for the first reintroduction; a second is due to be constructed at an alternative location. Gibbons will be housed in these enclosures for 2-4 weeks once relocated from the JGC in order to adjust to the new environment. Staff facilities have also been constructed on site for husbandry and monitoring teams. Figure 5-7. Community socialisation activities 3. Malabar Mts is anticipated to become the location for sustained releases of rehabilitated Javan gibbons as required until the area is significantly populated. Releases will occur gradually each year, with the first pair successfully released in June Sadewa and Kiki were released on June 15 in conjunction with a major event attended by the Minister of Forestry. The gibbons are monitored by a team of people comprising of 4 new JGF staff members, some selected from the local community providing the opportunity for collaboration and community engagement. University students are also involved in monitoring activities. Monitoring of each gibbon pair will be undertaken for at least one year to ensure likelihood of long-term survival. Results will be recorded and published, in order to be used as reference material for reintroduction protocol. IUCN Reintroduction guidelines for gibbons are to be developed during 2013 with the majority of funding already secured for this activity. 4 SGP Annual Report 2013

Figure Sadewa and Kiki being released from enclosure. Figure 11. SGP President Clare Campbell with the JGC and Puntang team. 4. Now that funding has been secured, one GPU will be assembled to perform security patrols within the release site as well as surrounding areas in the Malabar region. The 6 person unit will comprise of 4 x JGF staff member and 2 x Perhutani staff. The unit will patrol 4 days per week. In order to increase the capacity of this team they will require training by experts in the field. Training will be undertaken with similar operating units in Indonesia such as the Rhino Protection team in Way Kambas, Sumatra. 5. Working with local communities, an identified planting zone in Malabar Mts, will be re vegetated with native species. Staff will also work to empower local communities by assisting to develop sustainable agro forestry, demonstrating benefit through conservation programs. This project will likely begin with a 5 hectare pilot project. Alternative funding will be sourced for this aspect of the project. SGP Annual Report

The deliverables of the project will include; The successful adaptation of rehabilitated Javan gibbons back into wild habitat in Malabar Mts (this will include two pairs in 2013 and at least another two pairs during 2014, totalling 4 pair for the duration of this project.) adequate protection of released gibbons and habitat, regeneration of at least 5 hectares of surrounding forest over a 5 year pilot project (once funding secured), successful and sustainable agro forestry operation in at least one community surrounding Malabar Mts (once funding secured), and, at least 1,000 students visited by MCEU per year. The release of gibbons will be monitored and success evaluated on the basis of survival and reproduction. Information on the release will be published and made available to other Gibbon conservation projects. A summary of Javan gibbon releases to date will be presented by Clare Campbell at a workshop to be held in late 2013 where IUCN Reintroduction Guidelines for Gibbons will be developed. Experiences from various projects throughout South Asia will be shared and agreed guidelines formulated based on current knowledge. As outlined above, stages 1-3 of this project have been implemented, with the first pair of gibbons, Sadewa and Kiki were released into this area on June After spending several weeks in their soft release enclosure on site, adapting to their new surroundings they were released into the forest under the close observation of the Gibbon Monitoring Unit. As per previous releases, we have elected not to provide supplementary feeding at this stage. Being a larger area than Pattiwel forest, the gibbons are proving challenging to monitor and we are currently exploring options for tracking devices that may be suitable for future releases. With at least three other pairs of gibbons ready for release at the JGC, it is hoped that at least one more of these will be released during The release site will be soon also patrolled by a Gibbon Protection Unit (GPU) comprising of staff from JGF, local communities and the Forestry Department. It is critical that this GPU be formed ASAP and undergo sufficient training so that they can begin patrols prior to any gibbon release. The role of the GPU will be to have a presence in the forest area, to protect against illegal activities through regular patrolling of the areas and to complement the existing education unit in raising awareness about conservation in the area. Javan Gibbon Centre Update The JGC remains a critical element of the overall conservation strategy for the Javan gibbon. After the release of Sadewa and Kiki in June there are now 24?? gibbons remaining at the centre. There is now room to rescue additional gibbons although there are several females currently housed alone due to a shortage of males. After the first successful birth at JGC in 2010, Jowo and Bombom gave birth to their second infant in June Although breeding is not a priority at JGC, the gibbons are, where possible, placed in a normal social structure and given the opportunity to exhibit normal pair behaviours. This can be a good opportunity to determine pair bonding and suitability to be released and as breeding is fairly unusual in a high-density captive situation the gibbons are not placed on contraception. Jowo and Bombom have once again proven to be excellent parents and it is hoped that this family unit can be released into the forest in the near future. Figure 12 and 13. Jowo and Bombom with their new baby at JGC and Clare with JGF members. 6 SGP Annual Report 2013

Gibbon Health Overall, the health of the gibbons at JGC this year has been excellent. They have continued to undergo 6 monthly health checks and earlier in the year a full time vet was employed. This will enable much more consistency in terms of health monitoring and the vet is sure to be a valuable addition to the JGC team. Mobile Conservation Education Unit Some funding was provided to the Mobile Conservation Education Unit (MCEU) this year from funds allocated the previous year from Perth Zoo. This enabled the MCEU to focus activities in the region of the reintroduction site and deliver conservation messages to both school and community groups. The MCEU continues to be an important component of JGC activities, education local children about the importance of protecting wildlife and forests. Wildlife Asia Wildlife Asia continued to gain momentum throughout 2012 and Although income was not as high as anticipated some important work was undertaken to ensure deductible gift recipient status was obtained and to build relationships with potential donors. Wildlife Asia continues to work closely with existing partners as well as extending their network with a strong emphasis on the conservation of critically endangered species and their habitats in Asia. Wildlife Asia will continue to play an important role in gibbon conservation, offering a more holistic approach to the protection of habitat. Figure 14. Wildlife Asia 1 st Birthday cake at a celebratory event held in Sydney. SGP President attended the event and presented information about our programs. Memberships and Adoptions SGP memberships stood at 89 as of June This number has continued to decline which would appear to be a trend amongst NGO s. With social networking providing easy access to information, memberships no longer offer that excusive deliver of news. We will likely need to review how our membership programs work in future. Long-term memberships are important for SGP to maintain membership levels required by the Register of Environment organisations (to retain taxable gift recipient status) and we hope that members will continue to consider this option for renewals. The adoptions program continued to progress well but again, we need to improve marketing and promotion of these as they have the potential to be a great source of income for SGP. SGP Annual Report

Treasurers Report The Association recorded a deficit of $44,161.00, a significant decrease on last year s surplus of $ This trend in alternating surplus and deficit is due in part to our operation on financial year versus grants being awarded on calendar year. Although this figure may seem alarming, several large donations have been secured since July 1, which will place SGP in a very different situation for the coming financial year. With funds still to be secured for the operation of JGC we will have to work hard to raise sufficient funds to cover this element. Income this year was significantly down, with the absence of any major grants and events. As well as securing some large grants in the present year we also have at least one major event scheduled which will also help to boost income. Income totalled $33,859, arising mainly from small donations and events. Expenses totalled $78,020. $49,983 was provided to the Javan Gibbon Centre for operational costs, veterinary costs and supplies. $6000 was provided to Kalaweit for land purchase. $14054 was provided to Wildlife Asia to cover administration. This money will likely be recouped in the next 12 months. $471 was spent on essential travel with SGP committee members continuing to personally cover most travel costs. Donations continued to be an important source of income, with $17,233 derived from these, an increase on last year s income. Events were down this year with $7437 generated, due to the lack of Art Auction in this financial year. Merchandise generated a profit of $581 and Memberships remain an important income source generating $2505 and adoptions raised $1375 (included in donations). Thank you once again to our treasurer Sharon Buckland for keeping our books in order throughout the year and for arranging the audit. Thanks also to WF Dawson and Associates for undertaking our annual audit. Events Events continue to be one of the primary sources of fundraising for SGP and provide us with a great opportunity to raise the profile of gibbon conservation and attract a new audience to our cause. Part of the year has also been spent planning for our Art Auction to be held later in 2013, which traditionally is our most successful event. Quiz Night The year kicked off for SGP with a very successful quiz night which turned out to be a very popular event. Everyone enjoyed the evening hosted by local stand- up entertainer Bluey Von Steiger. Not only did we have many curly questions but also games like heads and tails, toss the coin at the bottle, plus a raffle, bar, auction and bake-sale. We would like to thank everyone who attended the event, Bluey Von Steiger for giving up his time to MC the evening and to all our Sponsors who provided fantastic prizes for the evening. 9 An Evening for the Animals Gala In October 2013 was fortunate to be supported by the Evening for Animals Gala event. This was a fabulous evening and we were grateful for the opportunity to share our gibbon stories with a new audience. Funds raised from the evening will contribute towards Kalaweit land purchase. Figures 17 and 18. Guest speakers at An Evening for the Animals Lisa Roet Exhibition In October, SGP President, Clare Campbell opened artist Lisa Roet s exhibition at the New Albion Gallery in Sydney. The event presented an opportunity to connect art, conservation and music. Lisa s world-renowned representation of primates in her artwork, as well as a unique performance from Kyla Allen showcased the qualities and charm of gibbons and gave us the opportunity to raise awareness about their plight. The evening was attended by about 100 people. Thanks so much to Lisa Roet and the New Albion Gallery for the opportunity to share our message. Lisa continues to be an outstanding supporter of our work and will once again feature a piece in this year s Art Auction. Figure 19. 10 Go Without for Gibbons For the whole of February 2013, each member of the Silvery Gibbon Project (SGP) Committee sacrificed a luxury to raise funds for gibbon conservation. Many in our committee went without such things as coffee for a whole month, donating what they would have spent to the SGP. Others went without beer, cakes and sweets or buying clothes! The Go Without For Gibbons campaign didn t just involve the committee. All around Perth and other cities in Australia, and indeed from other parts of the world supporters joined the campaign via our Facebook page. Kansas zookeeper Sydney Fitzpatrick went without alcohol, sweets and dinning out to lunch for the entire month. Joanna Crego Husby from Colorado stated on our Facebook page: Thank you for helping me to become a healthier person while getting to support gibbons. I have not had a cigarette since 31 Jan 2013 and I am still going strong. Thank you for all that you guys do for these amazing animals! Figures Some of the Committee members struggling with their addictions Family, relatives and Facebook friends also joined in and we are pleased to announce that we raised the grand sum of $4688. A great fundraiser and we hope to do it again in Tranby College Market Day We also visited Tranby College early in the year and were once again impressed by the support of this amazing school. Tranby College is a great example of how schools can get involved with conservation and not just learn about the plight of endangered species but also assist with fundraising and learn that they can actually make a difference. 11 Wildlife Asia Big 5 Tour Figure 28. Promotion of upcoming Big 5 Tours In March 2013 the inaugural Big 5 tour was conducted, giving participants the opportunity to visit some of the key projects supported by Wildlife Asia, including the Javan Gibbon Centre. Tour members were required to raise funds in order to participate. The tour was an outstanding success and plans are in place to undertake more of these in the future. The following report from SGP member Emma Malloch, describes highlights from the tour: Figure 29. Proboscis monkeys in Borneo My name is Emma Malloch and I am the newest Committee member of The Silvery Gibbon Project (it must have been fate that I fell in love with the amazing Hylobates moloch). I have always loved gibbons; however, I never imagined that I would ever be lucky enough to work with them. In September last year, I started work at the Perth Zoo and wanted to get involved straight away. I decided to go on the very first Big 5 Tour organised by Wildlife Asia in March this year. I wanted to get an overview of the conservation issues in Indonesia, and see first-hand the animals and rehabilitation facilities. It was even better than I could have imagined. This trip was an unbelievable experience, with memories that will last a life time! There is nothing more humbling than sitting on the back of a boat in the middle of the forest jungle watching the sun rise as thousands of birds sing their morning song. Breaking through this chorus of bird song was the majestic call of the gibbons from deep in the jungle. It was a small tour group, to ensure a more intimate and more rewarding experience. We saw the incredible efforts of the conservation groups involved with orangutans, sun bears, asian elephants, the rhino and silvery gibbons and much more. We were all impressed with the great work being done. We visited the Javan Gibbon Centre (normally not open to tourists), the Asian Rhino facility, orangutan rehabilitation centres and sun bear rehabilitation centres. I will never forget watching a female orangutan build a nest for her child and herself just before the skies opened and we were greeted by the most intense but refreshing rain of my life. I will also never forget spotting a baby silvery gibbon swing between the branches, high in the trees; or proboscis monkeys jumping in huge numbers into the river right in front of us; or a totally wild and weathered orangutan. SGP Annual Report

Figures Just some of the wildlife observed on the Big 5 tour. The Big 5 trip was run incredibly well with fantastic accommodation and food. All of the staff and local guides were fantastic. The best thing of all is that we were contributing to the conservation of the precious animals of Asia. I could not recommend this trip more for anyone that wants to experience the true beauty of this world. This trip has changed my life! Figure 36. Enjoying a boat trip in Borneo Comedy Night st On 1 March, the day after the month long Go Without campaign, the SGP hosted another successful Comedy Night at the Applecross Tennis Club. The event featured local comedians: Sarah Furtner, Ayden Doherty, Sarah Young, Bluey Von Steiger and John Robertson. The night was a wonderful mix of laughs and games and all in the name of a great cause. A big thank you to Jason Credaro from Little Creatures Brewery and all at Little Creatures for the generous help with the beer for the night and Credaro and Beach Head wines. Thanks too for everyone on the Committee that made it a success. Figures 37 and 38. Enjoying SGP Comedy Night 12 SGP Annual Report 2013

Future Planning With funding now secured for 2014 for the Reintroduction Program our efforts must now focus on ensuring that JGC can continue to operate at the required level and potentially to assist with funding other gibbons projects. SGP will be providing some funding to Kalaweit Gibbon Project for the purchase of land at the Supayang reserve later in 2013 and we hope to be able extend our support to both Kalaweit and other gibbon projects across South East Asia. SGP President Clare Campbell has extended her leave from her Perth Zoo position to continue to develop the project and seek support for conservation initiatives in Indonesia. Clare was also elected to the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group Section on Small Apes this year. A focus for this group in the 2013/2014 financial year will be organising an international workshop to develop IUCN Guidelines for Gibbon Rehabilitation, Reintroduction and Translocation. These will be drafted early in 2014 and will provide a useful tool for gibbon conservationists in all regions. The task will also assist to create a network and better sharing of information between projects. Figure 40. Clare visiting JGC with IUCN PSG SSA Co-odinator Ben Rawson Plans are also in place to propose the Year of the Gibbon for 2014 or 2015 as well as planning for the 2 nd Gibbon Husbandry Conference, which will be hosted by Perth Zoo and organised by Vice President Holly Thompson. SGP will continue to work closely with Wildlife Asia in delivering a broader message about conservation in Indonesia and raising funds to support these initiatives. Wildlife Asia also provides the opportunity for us to collaborate on events and campaigns. As SGP grows and develops we must now build capacity within our own organisation and seek opportunities to cover administration of the project. SGP has until now operated on 100% voluntary labour however as our budget grows and income builds rapidly so to do our reporting and administrative requirements. The current ability to operate at this level on voluntary labour is unlikely to be sustainable. We will endeavour to seek grants to cover such costs and will continue to ensure that 100% of donations contribute to our conservation projects. 14 SGP Annual Report 2013

Special Thanks I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the fabulous SGP Committee and their families who have supported their efforts and dedication throughout the year. Events take considerable time and effort to organise and we have a very committed team on board who are very generous with their time and funds. Thanks as well to those who have undertaken and assisted with administrative duties throughout the year. Most of this work happens behind the scenes and we would not be able to operate the organisation without such support with accounts, newsletters, memberships, adoptions, minutes, reports and grant applications. I would also like to pass on special thanks to the following supporters of SGP; Perth Zoo and Wildlife Conservation Action for their ongoing support of the project. International Primate Protection League for their generous support of JGC. It is great to know that this organisation is there to support us when we desperately need funds. The anonymous donor supporting the Reintroduction Program for Javan gibbons. Enviroprint for being fantastic supporters of conservation and so generously donating our brochures. Bill and Lyn Waterer for continued support of SGP and their dedication to wildlife conservation. Milly Valentine for her efforts to raise funds for SGP and for inspiring other children to make a difference. Gary Sundin and Orangutan Odysseys for their assistance and partnership for the Big 5 tour. Wildlife Asia Management Committee and Fundraising Manager Michael Kerr for supporting SGP and assisting with our fundraising efforts. Rebecca Tilbrook for her support of SGP, especially for including us as a beneficiary of the Evening for the Animals event. Perth Zoo Docent Association for their ongoing support of events and for spreading the word about SGP. WF Dawson and Associates Accounting services for undertaking our yearly audit. Tranby College for their ongoing support in donating to SGP and encouraging students to support conservation. Ursula Beaton for her help with administration and events (and supporting your wonderful husband!) Jason Credaro and Credaro Wines for their ongoing support of our wines. It is fantastic to be able to provide such high quality beverages at our events! Karen Payne, Emma Malloch, Derek Smith, Kate O Connell and Anton Ario for the use of their photos. To those supporters who generously provided artworks and prizes for our events. There are too many to mention but we truly appreciate your support. Thank you also to all of our members and supporters for their financial support throughout the year, for your generous donations and attendance at events. Finally, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Javan Gibbon Foundation, Anton Ario and the dedicated staff at JGC and Kalaweit for their outstanding efforts in gibbon conservation. It has been a very busy year at JGC especially with the reintroduction program and the recruitment and training of several new staff. We all appreciate your efforts and wish you all the very best for Will you hear their call? SGP Annual Report
