Duke of Burgundy - Peter Eeles Butterfly Conservation Fundraising Guide
How your money helps By fundraising for Butterfly Conservation you can help prevent the extinction of our native butterflies and moths. Our landscape scale projects have already been successful in reversing the decline of several highly threatened species. Butterfly and moth numbers have increased significantly in the project areas where we have been working but there is still much more to do. With your generous support we can achieve even more success for the future. 20 will buy 20 violet plants, providing food for Pearl-bordered Fritillary caterpillars. Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Jim Asher 100 covers the cost of 10 elm trees, essential for White-letter Hairstreak butterflies. 80 pays for 10 metres of fencing to allow conservation grazing or to protect coppiced woodland. White-letter Hairstreak - Peter Eeles 500 buys a brushcutter to clear overgrown scrub on our reserves so butterflies can thrive. 250 will provide a training workshop for up to 15 volunteers to support our work. 1,000 pays for a third of a hectare of coppicing to restore woodland habitat for fritillary butterflies. Together we can help struggling butterflies and moths recover and thrive.
Fundraising Ideas Searching for inspiration? Here are a few ideas to get you started... Get Sponsored Run a marathon or take part in any sponsored event and help raise money for butterflies and moths. Check our website for a list of upcoming events. Donations as Presents If you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary you could ask guests to make a donation to help save butterflies. Wing it to your Workplace Get colleagues to have a dress down, or even dress up, day. Provide butterfly friendly treats at tea-break in exchange for donations. Charity Challenge Visit to see what amazing challenges you can undertake to raise money for us. Get Green Fingered Grow some butterfly nectar plants and run a plant stall. Or you could even run an open garden, asking for donations from visitors. Bake for Butterflies Try selling homemade produce with a butterfly link. How about Hedgerow Jam for Hairstreak butterflies or Nettle Wine for the Comma, or why not do your own twist on the traditional butterfly cake? Other ideas. Sponsored Butterfly Walk Host a dinner or BBQ Car boot sale Hold a darts tournament Hold a Karaoke competition Shave your head Knit a caterpillar to sell Run a tombola, raffle or quiz night Do a sponsored silence Name the butterfly or moth competition Request some of our recycling envelopes Don t forget to share the news about your event!.
Green Hairstreak - Peter Eeles Chalk Hill Blue - Iain H Leach Comma - Peter Eeles Six-spot Burnet - Mark Parsons Hints and Tips Here are some useful bits of advice to make sure your fundraising runs as smoothly as possible Get some help Involve your friends and family. Many hands make light work, and it becomes a much more enjoyable experience if you do it with other people. Contact your local Butterfly Conservation Branch, they will be keen to help promote your event. Budget Be prepared for anything you need to buy upfront. Think carefully about the resulting income you might raise. Companies and businesses are often happy to donate items you need for your fundraising event, it might be worth approaching them. Make a list It is useful to create a timetable, counting down to the day of your event - break tasks down and give yourself deadlines to meet. Be realistic about how long things take and build in a bit of extra time to account for unexpected delays. Spread the word What ever you decide to do make sure you tell people about it! Get in touch with us and we can help make sure you get the most out of your event. Canary Shouldered Thorn - Mark Parsons Elephant Hawk-moth - Robert Thompson After the event Send a message to everyone who helped make your event a success. Let them know how much you raised. Enjoy yourself! After all you're raising money for a great cause and your efforts will make a huge difference to the future of butterflies and moths.
Purple Emperor - Peter Eeles Mother Shipton - Mark Parsons Small Tortoiseshell - Keith Warmington Lace Border - David G Green Money Matters Thank you for choosing to fundraise for us! Below is some information about getting your donations to us. It's quick and easy to set up an online Just Giving page so sponsors can give through the internet and you don't need to handle any money. Go to and click fundraise for us then follow the instructions. If you have any problems then fundraising@butterfly-conservation.org and we can help you set up a page. By Post You can send us the money you ve raised by post. Put all the cash you've raised in one bank account and send a cheque, made payable to Butterfly Conservation together with any sponsor/gift Aid forms to Butterfly Conservation Manor Yard, East Lulworth Wareham, Dorset BH20 5QP Match giving Lots of companies participate in match giving. So please ask if your employer will match fund the money you raise and double your fundraising efforts! Gift Aid Please ask people to Gift Aid their donation. Gift Aid is really valuable as we can claim 25p on every 1 donated. If you are interested in raising money for a specific project or for your local branch then get in touch with us at fundraising@butterfly-conservation.org In order to claim Gift Aid we must have your donors name and home address including postcode. Just Giving will do this for you or you can use a sponsor form or order donation envelopes to collect this information.
The Legal bits. We want your event to be as successful as possible, so we have included some useful advice for you. If you have any questions then please get in touch with us by ing Collections If you want to collect money on private property, such as in a pub or supermarket you need the owner or landlord's written permission. If collecting on the street, you will need a license from your local authority or council. Please don t collect money door-to-door or on the street as it s illegal to do so without a licence. Lotteries and raffles Raffles and tombola's are a great way to raise money. However they are governed by complex laws, so please check to find out more. To avoid the need for a licence all tickets must be sold at the location during the event and the result made public while the event takes place, or they must only be open to a closed group of people such as work colleagues. These raffles can use cloakroom style tickets. Any other type of raffle will need a licence from the district council and properly printed tickets. All tickets must be sold for the same price and should not be sold to anyone under the age of 18. Insurance Before running an event consider whether you need to take out additional insurance. If the event is in your home it is worth checking if your insurance covers you for Public Liability. If you are using a venue you may be covered by their insurance but you will need to check. You need to ensure your insurance covers all equipment and activities. Unfortunately Butterfly Conservation cannot take responsibility for anything that may happen at your event. Health and safety It is worth doing a risk assessment before the event to ensure any risks can be removed or prepared for. If you have members of the public at your event you may need first aid cover. Speak to your local St John s Ambulance or British Red Cross about any first aid requirements. For more Health and Safety advice and information visit
The Legal bits. Children and photography If you want to use photographs of children from your event you will need written permission from their parent or guardian. It is always worth checking with adults that they are happy for their own photo to be taken as well. We are always keen to share success stories, so if you are taking photographs at your event we would be very interested in seeing them. Please ask us for a form for people to sign, as this will allow Butterfly Conservation to use these pictures in the future Always ensure that children are safe and accompanied by a parent/guardian. Children should not be allowed to ask for or collect money without an adult. Printed publications If you produce any publicity materials to promote your fundraising event please include the following statement: "Butterfly Conservation is a charity registered in England & Wales (254937) and in Scotland (SC039268). This event is raising funds for Butterfly Conservation. Butterfly Conservation is very grateful for this support and delighted to accept the proceeds, but is not liable for this event." We have a variety of templates available for you to use. If you would like to use our logo then please fundraising@butterfly-conservation.org and we can send you the relevant logos and images. If your event involves the general public rather than friends, family and colleagues you may have to consider other legal, health and safety, and insurance issues. These websites are really useful for finding out more information, and We are incredibly grateful for your support and are happy to offer assistance with all aspects of your fundraising, however unfortunately Butterfly Conservation cannot take responsibility for anything that may happen at your event. If there is anything you aren't sure of or if you need more information on any of these topics then please get in touch with us at fundraising@butterfly-conservation.org
SPONSORSHIP AND GIFT AID FORM Name Event... Date Use Gift Aid to increase the value of your donation. For every pound you give, Butterfly Conservation will get an extra 25 pence from the Inland Revenue. So if you are a UK taxpayer please tick the Gift Aid column when you complete the form below. It s that simple! To qualify for Gift Aid, what you pay in income tax (or capital gains tax) must be at least equal to the amount we will claim in the tax year. Thank you for your support. Full name One name only please, not Mr & Mrs Home Address Postcode Amount Gift To claim Gift Aid we need your full address and postcode. We will not contact Aid you. Rec d TOTAL AMOUNT Two thirds of butterflies and moths are in decline. Butterflies and moths are important because they respond quickly to change, revealing the health of the countryside. Their falling numbers are an early warning to all wildlife which cannot be ignored. Butterfly Conservation is the UK charity taking action to save butterflies, moths and our environment. Our research advises people how to conserve and restore habitats. We run programmes for more than 100 threatened species and are involved in conserving thousands of sites and reserves.
