Duncan, Jr., Regional Metallurgist Rolled Alloy Perlite production has long involved the use of specialty high temperature alloys. The evolution of those alloys, with increasingly improved properties in oxidation and high temperature strength, particularly creep, has allowed for the use of higher production temperatures, while extending the life of production equipment. Most recently considered alloys may not yet be the best available. We will examine historic alloys for high temperature furnaces (including RA 309 and RA 330 ), and two new products (RA 253MA and RA 602CA ) in more recent consideration. Terajoule Inc. has developed a perlite furnace combustion system that has been retrofitted to five production furnaces, initially to save energy. Further enhancements brought changes in expanded density leading to increased perlite rates for the same ore feed. The presenter will describe the patent pending technology; show photos and video of working systems and present performance metrics of actual furnace conversions. You will discover how Terajoule has transformed these existing furnaces to produce more perlite using less ore while saving fuel. This session will go into depth of Oregon s stance and the larger picture of legalization :00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. WSDOT Media Filter Drain Storm Water BMP Alex Nguyen, P.E., Highway Runoff Program Manager Washington State Department of Transportation The Media Filter Drain is a stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) that is used to remove dissolved zinc and copper from highway runoff. The media mix contains perlite, dolomite, and gypsum. This passive filter BMP is regularly used in western Washington and may be gaining traction in other states as a viable option for stormwater quality treatment. What Does It Take To Monitor Stormwater BMP s like the WSDOT Media Filter Drain? Bryan Berkompas, Associate/Hydrologist Cardno, Government Services Division WSDOT s Media Filter Drain was monitored under the Washington Department of Ecology s Technology Assessment Protocol-Ecology (TAPE). Certification under TAPE allows the Media Filter Drain to be used for stormwater treatment across the state and in other states that recognize TAPE. This presentation will provide a brief overview of TAPE and the methods and level of effort to meet the TAPE requirements for WSDOT s Media Filter Drain.
