4 2015 UTAH SOCCER OUTLOOK Utah soccer is aiming for its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance and second in three years as it embarks on the 2015 season. After a third-place finish in 2013, the Utes started 2014 with a 10-match unbeaten run. However, a few significant players were lost to injury and the squad came undone in close games, dropping five one-goal contests in league play and finishing with a.500 mark. The learning experiences and hardships suffered last season seemed to have hardened the club as it prepares to embark on this new voyage will be another rock-n-roll year for Pac-12 soccer, Utah head coach Rich Manning said. Our team is excited to get after it. We have another good group of players and are ready to go. GOALKEEPERS Lindsey Luke returns in goal for the Utes and is 88 saves and six shutouts away from becoming the career leader in both categories. Lindsey has improved each season she has been with us. The experience she has gained the past three years has helped her grow, especially in her communication and decision-making. She is ready to have an outstanding senior season. Utah also has two other capable backstops who red-shirted last season in July Gentry and Tamaryn Braun. July is excellent in her shot-stopping and distribution. We expect her to contribute this year. Tamaryn has made great strides and will push the others. DEFENDERS In defense, senior captain and All-Pac-12 standout Megan Trabert led the team with four goals last season and placed third on the squad with 10 points. Megan has been a fixture in the middle, starting her fourth year. She is so steady and a great leader. Her presence and consistency allows others to thrive as well. Trabert will be paired with freshman Hailey Skolmoski in center defense. Hailey has jumped right in and earned the other central defender spot. She is tough, smart, great in the air and has the mental toughness we look for in defense. The outside spots will be occupied by two converted forwards, Ali Allen and Baylee Nielsen. On the outside, Baylee and Ali have moved from the front to the back in the off-season and have proven quick learners. Both have great speed and tenacity. The Utes also have a solid group of returnees in senior Nykell Seymour, junior Audrey Gibb and sophomore Hannah Hyde. Nykell will see time both in the back and as a forward. She will bring great attacking instinct from the back row. Hannah has improved tremendously in her defending and distribution and will contribute in the middle. Combined with the addition of three freshmen, Paige Johnson, Allie Millerberg and Shelby Stewart, and the Utes have quite a bit of depth at the position. Paige is an athletic freshman that can play on the outside or centrally. She is a very good 1v1 defender and shows excellent qualities. The other freshmen Allie and Shelby are good athletes and will also battle for time in the back. We want to have a stout defense and that really involves all eleven positions. However with our schedule and conference it is important to have players in the back row that can stop potent attackers. We have a really good mix of youth and experience, which should be a strength for our team this year. MIDFIELDERS The midfield area will welcome back a familiar face as Kaycee Buckley returns from injury. This should be another strong area for our team. We have versatile players that can keep the ball, project forward and help us win the ball back. Kaycee has worked hard to get back after last year s injury. She never stops working on offense or defense and can create goals.

5 OUTLOOK 2015 UTAH SOCCER Katie Rogers, an All-Pac-12 performer, started all but one game for Utah last season, finishing third on the team in goals, assists and points. Katie is our pivot player. She defends tenaciously and wins balls for us. She also can start our attack with an insightful pass or by switching the field. Paola van der Veen is an exciting prospect from the Netherlands where she was a member of the Dutch youth national teams. Paola will also play several roles, but she can create goals with a great pass. She also can score from distance and will be a threat on set pieces. Her experience in the BeNe League in Europe will bring a new element to the team. Sophomores Janie Kearl and Madi Clarkson return for their second seasons with the club. Janie is our Swiss Army knife. She can play a lot of positions, but we love her in the midfield and she covers ground, plays great defense and plays the simple possession game well. Madi brings toughness and a fantastic aerial presence. Joining these players in the midfield will be freshmen Eden Jacobsen and Liberty Taylor. Liberty is a tough, defensive-minded midfielder. Eden is a true number 10. She can create scoring opportunities with a final pass or by slicing and dicing on the dribble. FORWARDS Up front, the Utes will start sophomore Natalie Vukic along with juniors Taylor Slattery and Mikayla Elmer. Vukic played in every game last season as a freshman, scoring three goals including the game-winner vs. Utah Valley. Our attacking players got some valuable experience last season. As a group, we worked hard in the off-season on their fitness and finishing. Natalie is a pest for any defense to deal with. She has great energy and can get behind the opponent s defense with her speed. She is a dangerous around the box on the pass or dribble. Slattery had a breakout freshman season in 2013 with four goals and two assists. Taylor has worked hard to get back up to full speed. She has a great instinct around the goal and can finish with either foot. Elmer finished fourth on the team in assists from a midfield spot and now moves to the front. Her sister, Mariah, is a sophomore that was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team last year after scoring three goals and causing defenses havoc with her speed. Mikayla is one of our best dribblers. She has improved her strength and endurance and will be a strong contributor. Mariah has the speed and strength to break down defenses. She is a great dribbler and can find the goal herself. The Utes also return Cabria Turang and Addie Jensen while adding Max Flom. Max is like Nykell in that she can also play left back or up front. She is an excellent passer and dribbler. Addie has a great feel for the game and one of the best shots on the team. Cabria is a skillful winger with a good dribbling instinct. Last season, the Pac-12 sent a record nine teams to the NCAA Tournament. This year, you can catch nine of Utah s games on the Pac-12 Network, including the league opener against No. 3 Stanford on Friday, Sept. 25. Utah Women s Soccer plays its home games at one of the most picturesque venues in the nation. Ute Field is located in the northeast corner of campus nestled below the Wasatch Front, part of the Uinta Mountain range.

6 2015 UTAH SOCCER Junior Katie Rogers, a former Pac-12 All-Freshman Team standout, was recognized by the conference again last season. She has been a steadying force in the midfield and was third on the Ute squad in goals and points. After switching to defense during the preseason, senior Baylee Nielsen will take over at one of the outside back positions. She has played in every game the last two seasons for the Utes Sophomore Natalie Vukic had an impressive freshman season and will provide another versatile scoring option for the Utes. She played in all but one contest last season, finishing with three goals. Sophomore Mariah Elmer was selected to the Pac-12 s All-Freshman Team after finishing tied for third on the team in goals. Her breakthrough performance came when she scored the equalizer against No. 4 Stanford

7 2015 UTAH SOCCER Senior Megan Trabert is the steadying force on the Ute backline and has started every game during her Utah career. An All-Pac-12 selection last season, she tied for the team lead with four goals. Senior Kaycee Buckley has been a rock in the midfield during her time with the Utes. After an injury dampened her junior season, she returns to provide another stabilizing presence on the pitch. Preseason Prognostication The University of Utah soccer team was picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12 Conference this season, according to a preseason poll of the league s coaches. Stanford was selected as the preseason favorite with 114 points and 8-of-12 possible firstplace votes. Defending conference champion UCLA was a close second, tallying 111 points. PAC-12 Preseason Coaches Poll Place Team Points 1. Stanford (8) UCLA (3) 111 T3. USC (1) 91 T3. California Arizona State Colorado Washington Arizona Washington State Utah Oregon Oregon State 17 first place votes in parenthesis Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Luke is an All-NSCAA Pacific Region selection and an All-Pac-12 honoree. The single-season shutout mark is hers and with 20 blankings for her career, she currently ranks second all-time at Utah.

During his tenure, Manning has established Utah Women s Soccer as an elite program in the west. He has coached the Utes to an NCAA Tournament berth in six of his years at the helm. Prior to joining the Pac-12, Manning directed Utah to three Mountain West Conference regular-season championships (2003, `05, `06) and a pair of league tournament titles (2003, `04). It was a special 2013 for the Utes who notched their best finish since joining the Pac-12, placing third, and earning their sixth NCAA Tournament bid in the process. The Utes also went undefeated at home in 11 matches at Ute Field. Defender Jenny Hutton, goalkeeper Linsey Luke and midfielder Katie Taylor were recognized nationally for their success on the field as they were named All-Pacific Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Utah had four players receive postseason honors from the Pac-12 as Hutton and Luke were each named second team all-conference, junior Ashton Hall was an honorable mention selection and midfielder Katie Rigby was named to the all-freshman team. In the classroom, Utah had the third-highest GPA among Pac-12 schools and was awarded a NSCAA Team Academic Award while Jenny Hutton was named a NSCAA Academic All-American, the first for the Utes since HEAD COACH RICH MANNING Since the award was instituted in 1996, Utah has been named 12 times, including the last four seasons. The Utes are second all-time among Pac-12 schools, trailing only Washington (13). Seventeen members of the Utah women s soccer team earned Pac-12 Conference academic honors. Four student-athletes, Sarah Duncan, Ashton Hall, Katie Rigby and Megan Trabert were named to the second team while 13 other Utes earned honorable mention accolades. Since joining the Pac-12, Utah women s soccer has had 38 players earn academic honors from the conference, including nine student-athletes in 2011 and 12 in Named Utah s head coach in January of 2002, Manning has led the Utes to a (.605) overall record, averaging 12 wins per year. Utah is also against conference foes under Manning s direction, posting a league win percentage over of.656 over the last 12 years. Manning captured his 100th career win as a head coach during the 2009 season, all of which have come at Utah, with a 2-0 victory over Princeton at Ute Field on Sept. 9. Earlier that year, before injuries took a severe toll on the team, the Utes climbed to their first national ranking since 2006 after shutting out No. 19 Santa Clara, 1-0, reaching as high as No. 21 in the national polls. In 2008, Manning and the Utes took on a challenging schedule with one of his most youthful teams, featuring only two senior starters. After a slow beginning, Manning coached his team to an record, winning six of their last seven regular-season games to finish second in the conference. The second seed in the MWC Tournament, Utah reached the finals after defeating TCU in the semis, avenging their regular-season loss in Fort Worth. In 2006, Utah tied a school record for victories, finishing giving Manning his third MWC Coach of the Year Award. Additionally, Adele Letro became Utah s first player ever to be named an All-American. The Utes were the first MWC team ever to record seven league victories, winning the 2006 conference title with a perfect mark. Utah did not allow a goal in conference play, setting school and MWC records also marked the third time in four years that the Utes hosted opening-weekend games in the NCAA Tournament. Utah finished that season ranked in the top 25 in each of the major polls. Manning kicked off his Utah tenure in historic fashion, directing the Utes to their first-ever win over a top-25 team with a 2-0 shutout of No. 3 Portland at Ute Field on Sept. 1, The following week, Utah vaulted into the national rankings for the first time. Utah finished overall and to place second in the MWC that year, as Manning earned MWC Coach of the Year in his inaugural season. Utah head coach Rich Manning is entering his second decade at the helm for Utah women s soccer. Under his watch, the Utes have reached the NCAA tournament six times, captured five Mountain West Conference titles and completed three undefeated league campaigns. The Utes advanced to their first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2002, defeating arch rival BYU 3-2 in overtime in the first round. Manning and the Utes set the tone as a program that would be tough to score against, ranking 29th in the NCAA in goals against average (0.29). The program continued to flourish in 2003 when Utah tied its singleseason wins mark with a record as Manning was recognized

The Utes finished the season in the Top 25 rankings for the first time, coming in at No. 24 in the final NSCAA poll. 30 2015 UTAH SOCCER UTAH IN THE POSTSEASON Utah swept the Mountain West Conference championships in 2003, winning both the MWC regular-season and tournament titles. Utah Wins Six Conference Titles Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU. Utah s next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes trophy case at season s end. In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title. The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at With another flawless year in 2006, registering a record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC s history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year. Year-by-Year Coaching Records Year Coach Record Win % Home Away Neutral Conf. Win % Finish Conf.
