1 005 BIG WEST MEN S & WOMEN S TENNIS Big West Conference - Corporate Park, Suite 06, Irvine, CA 9606 Information Staff: Mike Villamor (Director), Darcy Couch (Assistant Director) For more information - Phone: (99) 6-55 Fax: (99) mvillamor@bigwest.org Release #9 - Thursday, April 7, 005 Big West Teams Look To Keep Winning Streaks Alive As Regular Season Dwindles Down In men s and women s tennis, the Big West s best is definitely saved for last. As conference teams close out their regular season schedules, a number of impressive winning streaks ride into this week s action. Four teams and four players own active winning streaks, each one proving to be important with the Big West Championships swiftly approaching. The longest current winning streak in the Big West is owned by UC Santa Barbara junior Marielle Gruenig, who has won consecutive singles matches. Gruenig s stretch has earned her a No. 96 ranking in the nation in singles competition. Gruenig will take her streak on the road this week when the Gauchos take on No. 66 Pacific on Saturday and No. 55 Fresno State on Sunday. Another player who has been dominant in singles play over the past few weeks is Long Beach State freshman Stephanie Bengson. Bengson has defeated eight straight singles opponents, which includes wins at No. 58 Purdue and No. Notre Dame during the 9ers Midwest road swing this past week. No. 7 Long Beach State will host the final matches of the regular season at home this week against No. Oregon on Friday and Big West rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. On the men s side, Pacific junior Arnar Sigurdsson is swinging a hot racket for the Tigers, winning of his last 5 singles matches, earning him a No. 8 national ranking in singles play. The five-time Big West Player of the Week has also teamed up with sophomore Vladimir Zdravkovic to win seven of their last eight doubles matches. The Tigers will host No. 66 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Another Big West player who has been virtually unbeatable as of late is Cal Poly junior Brett Van Linge, a winner of 0 of his last singles matches. Van Linge s play has helped the Mustangs win their last five consecutive matches, all on the road, and six of their last seven overall. The UC Santa Barbara men s tennis team has turned its season around, and currently owns a three-match winning streak, sparked by an upset victory over No. Harvard last Thursday. After losing eight straight road matches, the Gauchos have surged to win five matches during their seven-match homestand. After taking on the Tigers, the Gauchos will stay on the road and face off with No. 60 Fresno State on Sunday. Two Big West women s tennis teams have also put together a string of W s in the standings. UC Irvine has won three straight and six of its last seven matches at home. The Anteaters try to extend their streak this week at home against No. Sacramento State on Friday and UC Davis on Saturday. No. 66 Pacific has won two straight and three of its last four. The Tigers look to make it three in a row against Portland on Sunday. In this week s national rankings, Pacific junior Jorgen Vestli is No. 08 and UC Irvine senior Brian Morton No. 5 in singles action. The Anteaters are also No. 75 in the nation in the team rankings. On the women s side, Pacific sophomore Vana Mrazovic is No. 95 in the singles rankings. UCSB s Anselme, LBSU s Bengson Serve Up Weekly Tennis Honors UC Santa Barbara senior Alex Anselme (Santa Monica, CA) earned Big West Men s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors as he notched a victory over a ranked opponent in singles and helped the Gauchos to two team wins over ranked opponents, including one top 5 program. Anselme knocked off the No. ranked player in the nation, Benedikt Stronk of San Diego State, -6, 7-5 (0-8) to start off the week. He continued his success at No. singles with a 6-0, 6- victory over Harvard s Ashwin Kumar. That win helped UCI pull off the upset over the No. -ranked Crimson. Anselme also notched a -6, 6-, 7-5 win over Brian Morton of UC Irvine. Long Beach State freshman Stephanie Bengson (Albion Park, NSW, Australia) collected her second straight Big West Women s Tennis Athlete of the Week honor, increasing her winning streak to eight singles matches in a row at the No. spot. The successful week included a win over a ranked opponent. Bengson started off the week with a 7-5, 6- win over Stephanie Wooten of Purdue. She then knocked of Notre Dame s No. 00 Brook Buck, 6-, -6, 6-, on Saturday.
