3 FOLLOW US ON VISIT GOBLUEWAVE.COM WE ARE BLUEWAVE The BlueWave Athletic Department has undergone significant changes in the last two years. We now oversee five campus fitness centers (South, North, Kent, Downtown and Deerwood) and have expanded Florida State College at Jacksonville s (FSCJ) intramural and club opportunities for all students. Additionally, in fall 2017 we added women s cross country and eliminated women s tennis. This change has allowed our department to serve a large group of district and regional student athletes with a program that has historically been very successful at FSCJ. In 1982 and 1983, FSCJ women s cross country won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championship. We look forward to more championship titles to come. In , BlueWave student athletes averaged a 3.03 GPA with over 66 percent of the rostered student athletes at a 3.0 GPA or higher. Thirty-nine (49 percent) of rostered student athletes earned All-Region Academic honors for the State of Florida. Fifteen student athletes garnered Academic All-American Status with the NJCAA. In addition, three of our six teams had a 3.2 GPA or higher average for the academic year. We implemented the BlueWave Life Skills program in to provide a more holistic experience for student athletes, focusing on five key components personal development, service, athletic excellence, academic excellence and financial/career development. Through this program, athletic teams led or participated in 41 community service projects (a 45 percent increase from the year before). The women s basketball team won the overall department Life Skills Point Contest for athletic success and financial/career development. The baseball team won for service, academic excellence and personal development. As we move into the athletic season, we will focus on increased marketing efforts through live web streaming of home games for volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. We are also launching player profiles on GoBlueWave.com, providing more of a social media platform for student athletes to develop group followers. Go BlueWave! Ginny Alexander Director of Athletics

COACHING STAFF Coach Wooten is entering her second year with FSCJ s BlueWave women s basketball team.

Although the team came up short, they earned many first and second team awards.

HEAD COACH Barvenia Wooten Under her leadership, the team won the first BlueWave Athletic Department Life Skills Award.

4 COACHING STAFF Coach Wooten is entering her second year with FSCJ s BlueWave women s basketball team. When the conference started last season, she had six players and was successful in earning a playoff berth to compete at the Florida State College Championship. Although the team came up short, they earned many first and second team awards. Coach Wooten was successful in getting four of the six players recruited to top Division II universities on a full scholarship. HEAD COACH Barvenia Wooten Under her leadership, the team won the first BlueWave Athletic Department Life Skills Award. This program was implemented in the athletic season to enhance the lives of student athletes. Previously, Coach Wooten was the head women s basketball coach at her alma mater, Virginia Union University (VUU), from While at VUU, she was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach of the Year in That same year, her team won the North Division of the CIAA. Coach Wooten spent 11 years ( ) as a head coach at Prince George s Community College in Maryland. While there, her 2006 and 2010 teams finished fifth and 11th, respectively, in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament. Coach Wooten was also named the NJCAA District J Women s Division II Coach of the Year in 2006 and Coach Wooten is a highly decorated student athlete, having been inducted into the VUU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and then into the Communiplex Sports Hall of Fame. Eleven years later, she was honored by the CIAA as a Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary. In 2013, she was inducted into The Cincinnati Public School Athletic Hall of Fame. She has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Virginia Union University and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Nyack College. Michelle Duclos earned a bachelor s degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences from the University of Florida with a specialty in athletic training. She continued her education at the University of South Florida (USF) graduating with a Master of Arts in Physical Education. During her two years at USF, she worked with the women s volleyball team. She moved to Jacksonville after graduation and now works for Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute and as the head athletic trainer at FSCJ.
