6 Page 6 Ocber 23, 2014 Shopping trip costs Cowboy $29,500 for undies, cologne By Steve Escajeda Special Courier The National Football League has put out a great product on field this season but is still enduring a lot of negative press for players antics off field. It s no secret that some of trouble guys have gotten in is deplorable inexcusable. Believe me, just fact that y are ugh enough play in NFL proves how macho y are. They don t have go out prove it after games are over. But as bad as some of behavior has been, one act that has me scratching my head occurred just last week. This act didn t involve any weapons, or any drugs, or any violence against kids or women or pets, it didn t involve illegal gambling or any kind of racial slurs. In fact, incident is relatively insignificant when compared those or infractions just a class B misdemeanor. But it may be more mind-boggling than ors. Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Rle has played a crucial role for team this year backing up DeMarco Murray. Whenever league s p rusher has needed a break, Rle has filled in admirably by gobbling up yards help team. Unfortunately last week, Rle felt need gobble up some stuff help himself. Only thing is, he didn t feel need pay for it. Rle, who has signed a four-year $2.3-million contract, walked in a Dallasarea mall sle a tester bottle of Gucci cologne a two-pack of Polo underwear valued at $123. Now I make a fairly comfortable living re have been many times that I ve walked in a sre, looked at an item I just had have, looked at price tag walked away empty hed. I didn t just take it upon myself take it out of sre anyway. The big question is what would compel someone making $587,000 a year steal $123 worth of merchise? Is it fact that he is 22 but his brain is still functioning at capacity of a 10-year-old? Is he just an incurable klepmaniac? Did he lose a bet with one of his buddies? Who knows, all Rle said after he was caught is that he did something stupid. I guess he thought he could save some money by stuffing items in his bag but in reality, this may end up being most expensive cologne underwear he s ever purchased. The Cowboys organization has said that re will be a substantial fine that Rle will have take care of. I hope for Rle s sake it was a superspecial-colossal-fantastic-wonderful-once in a lifetime-type of underwear. I mean this better be kind of underwear that Fruit of Loom guys would be envious of. The ironic thing is that Rle did his dirty deed a day after Cowboys knocked off Seattle Seahawks in one of most important games of year. I don t know if this is way Rle decided celebrate or if he thought Cowboys players are now ast of wn don t have pay for anything anymore. He has be quick enough elude NFL defenders, maybe he was just seeing if he was fast enough elude sre security cameras? Actually, Rle did tell police that he sle items because he didn t want take time pay for m. That s honest original I wonder how many red lights he s driven through because he didn t want take time sp? To Rle s credit, he did seem apologetic when he faced his teammates about incident, admitting what he did saying that he would work on being best person he can be from this day forward. Of course, those are only words we ve all heard those words before. We ve all dome monumentally stupid things at age of 22. The real measure of life is what you do with penalties you receive due that stupidity. Hopefully, Rle will learn a valuable $29,500 lesson fine Dallas Cowboys gave him settle for cheaper underwear. And in one or twist, Rle will endorse wait for it underwear company MeUndies. MeUndies will pay a portion of $29,500 fine donate $15,000 worth of underwear basic apparel children in Dallas area. Go figure. A sporting view By Mark Vas Recorded for perplexity Last month saw end of Saturday-morning carons on network television. For first time in 45 years, this time-trusted trick employed by parents in an attempt sneak a little extra sleep on weekend before being bombarded by dems for whatever ridiculous products y-making cartels are shilling during those hours of our neglect, that precious tradition is no more. Not only do we lose a cultural uchsne, we also lose a lot of great sporting advice. Well, fear not kids, we are here help. It often has been said that re are two ways play sports: right way or wrong way. Well, carons offer anor way third way. For posterity, some of those tips. Baseball: When your team is down 40-0 in fourth inning, it is a good time re-evaluate your roster question why league would allow you sign a 93-yearold ballplayer in first place. Release that player, sign up a furry varmint that happens be living in outfield have him play all nine positions simultaneously. When pitching, be advised that one extra-slow pitched ball can be swung at missed three times, greatly lowering your pitch count strikeouts innings-pitched ratio. When running bases, always carry a framed picture of Betty Grable in your uniform so as distract opposing fielders break up close plays at plate. When hitting, feel free use your choice of American wood... in fact, you can use entire trunk of tree if you re able swing it. In field, should an opposing fielder hit one out of park, you may follow ball out of park, hailing a taxi should need arise, in order catch ball before it hits ground. Football: The key winning in football is somehow get opposing defense fall in on itself form a giant pile that leaves just enough space for your star player again, typically a rodent, hare or feline sneak through score. Also, when returning kicks, stiff arm has never been known fail. Use it liberally watch as opposing defenders fall wayside with asnishing ease. Boxing: If possible, wear a T-shirt in ring hide an iron plate behind said shirt. Also, ropes are your friend. Use m sling yourself across ring like an arrow, bashing your opponent. This works especially well if you also place an iron inside your glove. Outdoors: When hunting, should you come across one or two hunters who seem out of place, remain calm. One of m will level shotgun in your face. His name will eir Finances From Page 2 dropped some alger. Ask your docr wher comparable, covered drugs will work; orwise you could pay much more next year. Even if your plan hasn t changed substantially, it s still wise use Plan Finder at www. medicare.gov compare all available plans. You ll be prompted enter your medications dosages. The calcular n ranks plans by star rating overall cost. Note: The lowest premium may not be your best bet sometimes plans with higher monthly premiums have a lower overall cost due ir more favorable deductible, copayment coinsurance amounts. plans are HMO- or PPOtype alternatives Parts A B. Most cover drugs some include extra benefits like be Elmer or Dick Cheney. Stick your fingers in shotgun muzzle render weapon harmless. The or, again, named Elmer or George, can be tricked in thinking it s not rabbit season or duck season (depending on what prey species you are trying protect) if you engage him conversation long enough. This really works. Basketball: Pick Jordan for your team. That guy can fly. Mark Vas is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. A few tips: If your plan includes drug, you don t need Part D. Carefully review Annual Notice of Change from your plan for any substantive changes. Even if your plan hasn t changed substantially, you can use same Plan Finder as above review available plans. As with Part D plans, an plan with a lower premium might have a higher overall cost, due various restrictions. Botm line: Reviewing your options each year is complicated time-consuming. But if you don t your plans change significantly, it could cost you a bundle next year. Jason Alderman directs Visa s financial education programs.

7 Ocber 23, 2014 OUT ON A LIMB By Gary Kopervas AMBER WAVES By Dave T. Phipps THE SPATS By Jeff Pickering R.F.D. By Mike Marl Comix Super Crossword Your good health By Keith Roach, M.D. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an active 63-year-old female of normal weight. I exercise several times a week am in seemingly good health. About a year ago I noticed that my eyebrows were disappearing, starting on outer edges. They are now almost completely gone. During my annual physical in November, my general physician found that I have thyroid nodules. Three large ones were biopsied proved negative. Blood work, including a TSH level, is normal. Both my GP dermalogist feel certain that nodules are not causing eyebrow problem, because I don t have any or sympms of thyroid disease, but y don t know what is causing loss. K.F. The loss of eyebrows, superciliary madarosis, has many possible causes, but low thyroid is first one that most docrs think of. A TSH level is a reasonable screening test for thyroid disease, but if suspicion is high, I check additional thyroid tests, such a thyroxine (T4), free T4 T3. Occasionally TSH still can be in very broad normal range for most people but be abnormal for that person. Or causes of eyebrow loss include auimmune disease, inflammary skin conditions infection. Repeated plucking of eyebrows can lead permanent loss of follicles. Allergies cosmetics also can cause eyebrow eyelash loss. Have you changed your makeup recently? DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife continually tells me that I should not drink reheated coffee because it concentrates acid in coffee is bad for me. I never drink more than one cup per day, I always use a non-dairy creamer Splenda. I have researched this question online several responses say it is not harmful. In meantime, she drinks orange juice every day, which has a lower Page 7 ph than coffee. She sometimes complains about acid indigestion. Your comments? A. Acid is measured by ph scale with lower number, more acid in liquid. Coffee has a ph of about 5, slightly acidic, whereas orange juice has a ph of 3, which means it is a hundred times more acidic. Reheating coffee should not change acid concentration. Your smach has a ph of about 1.5 much more acid than eir juice or coffee. The caffeine in coffee can stimulate your smach make more acid, can weaken sphincter muscle that keeps smach acid from going up in esophagus. However, if it isn t boring you, re is no reason sp drinking coffee. One cup of juice usually doesn t cause acid indigestion eir. DEAR DR. ROACH: What is a hammer e? Is surgery always necessary? R.H. A hammer e is a deformity of second, third or fourth e, where it stays permanently bent. It may be caused by wearing shoes with o little e room. Roomy shoes are always a good idea, taping may be tried if e is still bendable. Surgery is used in cases of pain that doesn t respond conservative treatments. Surgery should not be done just for cosmetic reasons. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable answer individual letters, but will incorporate m in column whenever possible.
