3 The UNLV volleyball team received a new home in 2001 in the $16.8 million Cox Pavilion. The pavilion is a 78,300 square-foot, multi-purpose, state-of-the-art venue connected to the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Cox Communications and the Thomas & Mack Center formed a partnership that brought the new facility to UNLV and the Las Vegas Community. As part of a $5 million agreement, Cox Communications secured the naming rights for the facility as well as opportunities for sponsorship and hospitality. UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter stated when it opened, We are pleased that Cox, a relatively new member of the Southern Nevada corporate community, has chosen to take an active role in supporting both academics and athletics at UNLV. The new Cox Pavilion, like Cox s donation of television equipment and their annual support for a new cable television education channel, will benefit the community in many ways. The pavilion is a two-level structure. The ground floor features men s and women s locker facilities, player lounges and practice courts for basketball and volleyball. The top level is a multi-purpose venue with a seating capacity for 2,800 and features padded, retractable seating throughout. The Cox Pavilion features the best volleyball venue in the country and our athletes love to play in the bright arena with the home crowd support, said Allison Keeley, UNLV s volleyball head coach. The size creates an intimate viewing venue where our fans feel like they are part of the match. We appreciate the effort on the behalf of UNLV to showcase our team in such a spectacular setting. The Cox Pavilion is one of the finest facilities in the nation for college volleyball, said Mike Hamrick, UNLV's director of athletics. It creates a strong home-court advantage for our team, along with giving our coaches the ability to keep our teams competitive and attract some of the top recruits to UNLV. Cox Pavilion The Cox Pavilion plays host to all Rebel volleyball home matches, as well as all Lady Rebel basketball games. The lower level of the Cox Pavilion features practice courts for volleyball and basketball. 21

4 22 Student-athletes can enrich an institution of higher learning by bringing excitement, unity and pride to that institution. Because they are varied in their backgrounds and sometimes natural origins, they present a wonderful challenge to those of us who serve as their academic advisors. It has been my pleasure for over 20 years to assist my students in their athletic and academic pursuits and see them become doctors, brokers, teachers, business people and, yes professional athletes to name a few. ~Jacqueline Newton Academic Advisor UNLV Academic All-Conference 1999 Maria Julia Goes Angie Sylva Ever since its first classroom opened in 1957, UNLV has been on the rise in the world of higher education. From dusty lots with only a few buildings to a lush, ever-expanding setting, the campus has continued to respond to the demands stemming from an increased enrollment. The University boasts nationally competitive business programs and a school of hotel administration that attracts students from around the globe. But with more than 220 degree programs in 15 colleges, UNLV offers the student-athlete an array of educational opportunities. UNLV maintains an academic support system for its student-athletes that is designed to ensure success on and off the fields of play. Housed in the Flora Dungan Humanities Building, academic advisors work with the 17 men s and women s sports ensuring student-athletes receive personalized care regarding their progress in education. Advisors work with their sport-specific student-athletes in scheduling, tutoring, degree progress and NCAA eligibility. Providing even greater challenges, students who maintain a 3.5 grade point average can apply for entrance into UNLV s honor program. 5 Athletic Training Kyle Wilson Dir. of Athletic Training Bernie Chavies Asst. Athletic Trainer Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus was made easier with the opening of the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The state-of-the-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility, which opened in August of Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over and 8,500- square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer studentathletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three aboveground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV studentathletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV s academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. Aside from being four time larger than our former facility, says Kyle Wilson, UNLV s Director of Athletic Training. This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine. We re now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries. Ann Dovenmuehler Asst. Athletic Trainer Mary Rock Asst. 8 26 Birth Of A Conference The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions ~ Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming ~ decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, longstanding athletic rivalries. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within the MWC boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four league schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet ~ the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWCs newest member TCU, which begins competition in the season. Through its first six years, the MWC has participated in 18 bowl games, with seven of the conference s eight teams having made bowl trips. The Mountain West was the only conference playing multiple bowl games in the 2000 season to go undefeated, posting a 3-0 mark. In 2004, the Conference won the ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup by Cooper Tires after going 2-1 and recording the highest winning percentage of all Division I-A conferences. The MWC earned 18 postseason bids in men s basketball the past four years, including 11 NCAA appearances, while women s basketball tallied 14 NCAA bids and three Sweet 16 appearances since In softball, the MWC Mountain West Conference UNLV MWC Team Championships YEAR SPORT CHAMPIONSHIP Men s Basketball Co-Regular Season Men s Basketball Men s Golf Women s Tennis Men s Golf Women s Tennis Baseball Regular Season Baseball Women s Tennis Co-Regular Season Women s Swimming/Diving Regular Season Baseball Women s Golf Baseball Regular Season Baseball Women s Golf Women s Soccer Regular Season Women s Swimming/Diving Men s Swimming/Diving has had nine NCAA bids, with 2001, 03 and 05 receiving two selections. In women s volleyball, the MWC has had 17 NCAA berths with seven Sweet 16 appearances the las six years. Women s soccer has earned 10 NCAA bids since 1999, including multiple berths three straight years, with BYU advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2000 and the Elite Eight in Five of the eight MWC men s golf programs have earned NCAA berths. Year in Review The academic year marked several milestones for the MWC. Most notably, Utah became the first non-automaticqualifying BCS member to compete in and win a BCS bowl game as the Utes won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Ute quarterback Alex Smith, a Heisman Trophy finalist, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Smith was the first MWC student-athlete to be named National Player of the Year. The momentum would continue into the men s basketball season for Utah as sophomore sensation Andrew Bogut became the MWC s second National Player of the Year, including pick up the Naismith Trophy and the John R. Wooden Award. UNLV s Ryan Moore completed the hat trick for the MWC as he garnered national honors by capturing the Ben Hogan Award (top collegiate golfer) and the Nicklaus Award (top player in Division I) in The MWC had multiple bids to the NCAA Men s Basketball Championship for the fourth straight year, while two teams represented the MWC in the 2005 NCAA women s Basketball Championship. Overall, the MWC placed 35 teams and 36 individuals in NCAA Championships.

As the MWC embarks on its seventh season of athletic competition, Thompson enters his eighth year as the league s commissioner. In the six-plus years at the helm of the Mountain West Thompson has been Craig Thompson Commissioner instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue. Thompson has guaranteed greater levels of television exposure for all MWC sports in the years ahead with the advent of the league s partnership with College Sports Television (CSTV). A new era begins in the fall of 2006 as CSTV becomes the official television partner of the Mountain West Conference. Thompson recently navigated the Mountain West through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics when he announced in January 2004 that TCU would become the league s ninth member beginning with the athletic season. As Thompson looks toward the future, there is no more important issue facing the Mountain West than gaining access to college football s lucrative Bowl Championship Series. Thompson has been instrumental in the ongoing BCS discussions, and is considered a driving force in the negotiations for greater access. In 2004, the first step for all Mountain West teams was accomplished when the University of Utah finished the regular season with an 11-0 record and ranked sixth in the BCS standings. The Utes became the first team from a nonautomatic-qualifying conference to play in a BCS game, defeating Big East champion Pittsburgh (35-7) in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 1, Thompson continues to be active on the national level in intercollegiate athletics, holding many prestigious NCAA posts. He currently serves on the Men s Basketball Issues Committee. In June 1995, Thompson was selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Committee and worked as Chair from July September Prior to his current role, Thompson served as commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly 12 years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the leagues merger in Preceding his move to commissioner, Thompson served four years as the Director of Communications for the Metro Conference in Atlanta. The Iowa native spent his formative years in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. Following graduation, Thompson spent two years as assistant sports information director at Kansas State University before serving three years as director of public relations and promotions for the NBA s Kansas City Kings. Thompson, 48, and his wife, Carla, have a a son and a daughter. 27
