4 PALATIAL SOCCER COMPLEX PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a home field to call their own. And, when former men s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All- Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men s and women s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inauguaral contest in 2002 featured the WUSA s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2004, the UNLV men s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 27th season in UNLV Men s Soccer Media Guide

5 Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV men s soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features Bernie Chavies Soccer Athletic Trainer three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician s office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. An aquatic therapy room includes a rehab pool. The Marilyn & Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex sprawls over a 6,500-square-foot area. 5

6 Jason Kabo Strength & Conditioning Coach UNLV men s soccer s strength and conditioning program, under the guidance of Jason Kabo, is geared toward developing studentathletes athletic potential through a program that includes strength, speed, flexibility, conditioning and nutrition. Featuring an individualized conditioning regimen, players follow a year-round system stressing the development of strength, power and speed. Kabo, Jodi Sabataso and Director of Strength & Conditioning John Grieco are responsible for the year-round training of men and women student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports. The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioing Center s 8,500-square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and Olympian platforms. The 1,200-square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic areas catered to each sport. The room also features a premium sound system to further enhance the workout experience. A recent major addition, the covered ed agility drills area, features 3,000 square feet of artificial turf. More than 60 weight stations cover the state-of-the-art flooring inside the Ernie Becker Sr. Strength & Conditioning Center UNLV Men s Soccer Media Guide

9 The 2009 UNLV men s soccer season marks the 35th year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Senior defender Andrew Friel of Durango High School in Las Vegas is this year s scholarship recipient. He is the son of James and Kim Friel. Since 1974, the UNLV men s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 26 years.
